Although thetragic tornadoin Moore andsurroundingareas like

    Shawnee,Carney andLittle Axe

has been devastating to many, theinspirational stories that have comeout have been uplifting. As we said onSunday, God makes a living by bringinglife out of death. Resurrection happenson a daily basis. And we are Godspeople here on earth, called by Christ toreach out in compassion.

On Tuesday, Sharon Watkins, the General Minister/President of theChristian Church (Disciples of Christ) andBrandon Gilvin, Associate Director of theWeek of Compassion were in Moore totour the affected areas and to help designa Disciples response to the disaster.

Immediately following their tour theymet at the First Christian Church inNorman with other Disciple leaders inOklahoma to craft our response. Weare excited as we begin to reach out in

the rebuilding process. It will take a longtime, but we are prepared to be there forall who are affected.

Many in our church have offered toreach out as well. If you are interestedin helping out in the long term, pleaselet us know at the church. We will beinvolved with other Disciples and throughour Week of Compassion offering we willhave funds to help those in need. Youcan call Iris and give her your name sothat we can contact you when we beginthe aid. Meanwhile you can visit theWeek of Compassion website for updateson the Disciples response to the tornado.

I also received an interesting e-mailabout how to talk with children andyouth about the tragedy. Many excellent

points were made, not the least ofwhich is how devastating this can befor our own children who only see it onTV. With the constant coverage it canbe overwhelming and fear-inducing to

our kids. Its a good idea to limit theirexposure to the graphic scenes andhave open communication with them.Associate Regional Minister MichaelDavison sent this helpful website: wwwdiscipleshare.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Revolutions_13_God_Weather_and_Natural_Disasters.pdf

Let us be in prayer for all of thoseaffectedand thank you for yourgenerous responses, both throughthe church and through Week ofCompassion. If you wish to donate, yocan do so through the church, notingDisaster Relief on your giving.

    Thanks again.
