    The Chalice

A publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK

    CONNECTIONVol. 5 No. 20 May 23, 2013

Penny and Ireceived a callfrom RegionalMinister, TomJewell, askingus if we wouldconsider movingto Bartlesville,

Oklahoma to fill in for Sharon Watkinswhile they searched for a new minister. That sounded like a great way to retirefrom First Christian Church in Salem,Oregon after thirty one years. Sowe came back to where we started,in Oklahoma. Then after two moretransitional ministries in Woodward andOklahoma City we decided we would

retire again and come to Edmond wherewe would be close to our son, daughter-in-law and three grandsons.

I think I have discovered what I dobest; nothing. That is why I was surprisedwhen I met with Don DeSpain and CraigAdkins and they asked if I would consider

joining the staff here at First ChristianChurch Edmond while they searched fora new Associate Minister. I wondered ifthey had considered that two Shorowson one staff would be one Shorow toomany. They said they had consideredthat but this would be for a short timeand I would be a support person. Thereare so many things that need to be donethat Chris, Jerry, and Mark just wont beable to handle. I agreed to give it a try.

So now I have an office in the churchand invite you to come and check itout. Or better yet, I could come seeyou. A long time ago, before your time,a minister used to make house calls(Doctors too) - come right to your door to

check on you. If you would like a housecall, Penny and I would love to come seeyou. I realize this is not a call from theSenior Minister, but we know the SeniorMinister quite well and could tell youstories that no one else knows.

I look forward to meeting all of you!

    There isGood Newsto report

about our 40 Days of CompassionBanquet and Auction on Sunday, April28. As you recall, the event was afundraiser for the Week of Compassion, our Disciples disaster relief fund. Weraised a total of $10,233.87!This money will go to the Week ofCompassion endowment fund, the

Circle of Compassion, in the name ofour church and will help to offset anyadministrative costs and provide morerelief funds to help others in need. We

can add to this fund at any time and thushelp WOC to do even more work withthose suffering from natural disasters.

Our timing could not be better. Ireceived an e-mail from Mary LouHayden, the treasury assistant forthe Christian Church Foundation onMonday, May 21, at 10am, sayingthat the First Christian Church ofEdmond Permanent Fund for Weekof Compassion had been established, just hours before the horrible tornado

struck Moore. And hours later Week of

Compassion would be responding to themergency, providing aid and funds forimmediate relief in Moore. Your giftwas already at work! If you would likto give to help those in need in Moore, please write a check to the church withWeek of Compassion Moore writtenon it, or go to the Week of Compassionwebsite and donate there. And knowthat our membership in the Circle ofCompassion means that more of our aigoes directly to those in need. Greatwork,FirstChristian!
