1 March 2016 From the Pastor’s Desk… The Lenten Journey We are now in the middle of our Lenten journey as we look toward the cross and ultimately to Easter Sunday. It really should be the most challenging time of the year. The Sunday scripture texts confront us with questions about who we are in relation to Jesus and call into question our lifestyle. During the forty days of Lent, we are challenged to repent – to make a U-turn. God calls us to stop just going with the cultural flow and go in another direction by following Jesus. I find my lifestyle called into question by the challenging words of Jesus. He tells me to be a servant, the least, a slave. Yet, I want to be served, be great and have others do my bidding. However, when I take time to reflect, I realize that the most meaningful experiences of my life are those in which I have done what Jesus called upon me to do. What gives me purpose and meaning are the opportunities I have been given to offer myself to make a difference in the lives of others. So, it a blessing to be in ministry at Monroe Street United Methodist Church. Not only do I have the privilege to serve the members of the congregation, but I get to interact with so many people during the week who come to the church seeking assistance. I am also blessed to be involved in committees and organizations beyond the church, which are working to make a real difference in this community. I thank God this Lenten season, for it reminds me what a blessing it is to be a servant. I pray that I will embrace the call even more fully. And I pray that we, as a congregation, will be able to fully give ourselves to the ministry to which we have been called. Lent affords us the opportunity to take stock of our lives, look deeply into our souls and then, when necessary, make a U-Turn to follow Jesus more fully. PALM SUNDAY BAKE SALE Calling all butchers, bakers and candlestick makers! Our Youth Group, small in number but mighty in Spirit, will hold a sale in Circle Drive on Palm Sunday, March 20, both before and after the morning worship service and the Palm Sunday evening concert. Donations of baked goods, candies, breads, sweets and savories are needed to supplement what we can produce. We haven't had any candlesticks in past sales, but have included cards, stationery, small decorated plush animals, and flowers, so candlesticks or other non-edible donations would be appreciated as well. As for the butcher – bacon goes with everything! The Play with Us team will be assisting on the day of the sale, and a few more helpers would be appreciated. Proceeds will help finance this summer's youth mission trip, which will include service opportunities and a poverty immersion experience with our own Steve North here in Toledo. Thank you in advance for your support of one of our major fundraisers! PALM SUNDAY CONCERT This annual highlight of Monroe Street’s concert series will begin at 7:00 p.m. on March 20. This year the concert features two works by the great composer, Beethoven, and is dedicated to the memory of Maestro Bernard Sanchez, founder and longtime conductor of the concerts. LIBRARY NEWS As you look at the south wall of Circle Drive foyer, there is a bookcase filled with the most recent books added to our church library. Recently the talk about the emerging church led me to purchase several books on that topic. You will find several “emerging church” titles on the Circle Drive bookshelf. To borrow one, please sign the card inside the front cover with your name and phone number and then place the card in the box on the top of the bookcase. Loan time is one month, and there is a box at the left bottom of the bookcase for returns. Happy reading! Ellen Steiner LUNCH BUNCHERS The next gathering of the Lunch Bunch will be at noon on March 19 at the Seafood Restaurant, 5504 Alexis Road, Sylvania. On April 22 we will meet at the Red Lobster, 4990 Monroe Street, Toledo. On May 21 we’ll gather at noon at the Schoolhouse Lunchroom, 836 Monroe Road at Secor Road in Lambertville. During the summer months we will change our meeting times to 10 a.m. again. This seemed to be a preferred time when we did this last year. If you would like to prepare a short devotion for one of these dates, that would be great. Just let Kathy know ahead of time which date you prefer. Please call Kathy Moore at 419-885-3918 with any questions or suggestions you might have. Thanks so much. God be with you.

WONDER, LOVE, AND Praise

WORSHIP WITH US Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday morning worship, a procession of palms, and a look toward the cross. Maundy Thursday is marked with a service at 7:00 p.m., with Communion and the Wesleyan Chorus singing. This holy day is a preparation for the days to follow, remembering the Lord’s Supper with His disciples. On Good Friday, Monroe Street Church will host a sacred cantata, presented by the Toledo Choral Society, at 7:30 p.m. The work presented, The Seven Last Words of Christ, by Theodore Dubois, is based on Jesus’ final words from the cross. It is Dubois’ most popular work, and is in the form of a sacred cantata or oratorio. The setting is deeply moving and evocative. Our Easter Worship Celebration begins at 10:15 a.m. with an extended prelude by the Glass City Brass. Music will also include Angels’ Wings handbells, the Wesleyan Chorus, and of course, our marvelous Moller/Fowler organ. HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! Do you know and love singing the Hallelujah Chorus? If so, you are invited to sing it with the Wesleyan Chorus at the end of the Easter morning worship service. Plan to attend rehearsal that day at 10 a.m., in the sanctuary. Music will be provided. Learn WITH US

WORLDS OF BELIEF Members of the UnSunday School "Worlds of Belief" class are attending the series "Islam 101," a free class held at the Perrysburg mosque on the third Wednesday of each month, January through May, at 8 p.m. Mary MacDonald, Sam Hamer-Light, and Lynne Hamer attended in January and February, and are planning to attend again on March 16 (and beyond). The class was informal, all welcome (no sign-in, no calling on audience members, don't have to attend every session, cookies and coffee). We all felt we learned a lot, and had avid conversation all the way home! If you would like to be picked up at your home to attend the event with us, we can do that! Contact Lynne via phone or text at 419-283-8288 or [email protected]. ADVENT-SEARCHERS CLASS Please join us beginning on March 6 for a six-week Lenten study. We’ll join Adam Hamilton during Lent and Easter exploring the major themes of the Gospel of John. This is a DVD-based study, “John: The Gospel of Light and Life.” Discussions will be led by Pastor Larry.

CHILI COOK-OFF 2016 On January 17, Reeder Hall was hot, hot, hot! A record number of nine entries made for a spicy, delicious and spirited competition, with many people going back for seconds and thirds before casting their ballots. Cindy D'Amato's spicy Italian Chili won her the title of 2016 Chili Champion. Barbara Coleman's Chicken Chili came in as Runner-up. Honorable mention goes to Bill Hull, as his venison chili was gone halfway through the tastings! Many thanks to all who brought chili or side dishes and to all those who helped before, during and after this fun-filled and well attended event! See you next year as we answer the burning question, "Who will be the 2017 Chili Champion?"

HOLLY GLEN EXTENDED CARE INITIATIVE

HEARTLAND HOLLY GLEN SPOTLIGHT - PAUL DAVISON One of the delights of serving in the Holly Glen ministry has been getting to know Paul Davison. Paul is a long-time Holly Glen resident who plays the piano for our worship services. He also plays for an hour each Wednesday and Friday as HHG residents eat their evening meal. It turns out that Paul was also a member of Monroe Street United Methodist in the early 1960s. Paul sang in our choir for several years when George Lackland was the Pastor and Mary Anderson was the Choir Director. Paul joined another church when he moved to live in Stoney Ridge. Paul was born in 1928 and raised in Indiana. He learned to play the piano when he was seven and has been playing ever since. His music teacher was a member in his father’s church. As an adult, Paul worked as an accountant for Gulf Oil in Fort Wayne until that office closed and he transferred to Toledo. Later he worked in several other accounting positions before retiring. Paul has been a long-term member of Calvary United Methodist Church on Sylvania Avenue. Following a fall about eight years ago, he moved to Holly Glen when he could no longer live on his own. It is a blessing to have Paul play at our worship services on the fourth Sunday of every month at Holly Glen. Join us for worship at Holly Glen and a chance to hear and meet our friend, Paul Davison.

MONROE STREET NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER

Greetings from the Neighborhood Center: We are excited about the growth of our Savvy Seniors Program. Our latest Tai Chi Class has 23 new participants. This is a 20% increase from the last session. Our cardio dance class and Zumba classes have seen a 5% increase since January 1. Look for the launch of our chair Yoga class in April, as well as our 6 week boot camp for pre-teens. Can you believe it's time to think about summer camp for your child, grandchild, or children you know? Adventure Camp will run from June 13 to August 12. The registration fee of $25.00 is due by May 15. The camp cost is $325.00 for the entire summer. The Neighborhood Center is looking for volunteers to help us sort through donations on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you can give 2 to 3 hours of your time, please contact Clara at 419-473-1167. Yours in service, Clara L. Petty Executive Director

YOUNG VOICES OF GREATER TOLEDO

Young Voices of Greater Toledo is a music ministry outreach of our church. Will you support us by offering a snack for a Tuesday evening rehearsal? It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just some nourishment to give the kids energy for a long evening. If you can provide a snack, please sign up on the list posted on the bulletin board outside the choir room, or call Denise at 419-473-1167, ext. 230. Reach out to the kids from our community!

COMMUNION OFFERING The First Sunday Communion Offering for March will be the final offering in support of Toledo Campus Ministry’s Alternative Spring Break. As you make your offering on March 6, a group of mentors and students will already be in Nashville, Tennessee preparing to work with Project Connect Nashville. More than 19 participants will have the opportunity to build relationships with disconnected and vulnerable men, women and their children in a variety of ways. Our Communion Offerings in January, February and March help subsidize the cost of the trip and provide scholarships for students who would like to participate but need financial assistance. The ministry takes flight on faith, often before all the bills have been paid. Any money given in excess of what is still needed will support the Rev. Dee Baker Mission Fund and help to make future mission trips possible. Please give generously. SURVIVE AND THRIVE BREAD FOR THE WORLD TACKLES GLOBAL MOTHER AND CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS IN 2016 Bread for the World’s 2016 Offering of Letters is entitled “Survive and Thrive” and will involve writing letters to Congress to request 230 million dollars of funding in the U.S. budget to support nutrition and health programs for mothers, newborns and young children. Passage of the Global Food Security Act and food aid reform will also be priorities in this effort. Because improving nutrition and health among mothers and children is so critical “to ending poverty in all its forms everywhere” (Goal 1 of the Millennium Development Goals), Monroe Street Church will be participating in an extended campaign from the distribution of letter writing packets on One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday, March 13, to a Bread for the World celebration and dedication of our letters on Mother’s Day, May 8. It is our hope that the letters we dedicate will honor all mothers, but especially those who took care of our nutrition and health needs when we were children. Bread for the World has expressed some concern that budget decisions may be made earlier in an election year than they otherwise might, and has requested that

advocates write their representatives in Congress as early as possible. To facilitate this, the Serve With Us Team will provide email links for writing to Congress along with a feedback card in each letter writing packet on which participants can report that they have already written a letter to their Representative and/or Senators and sent it via email or snail mail. We will collect the feedback cards and dedicate them with any remaining letters on Mother’s Day. Mahmoud Fathalia, former head of the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, once said, “Women are not dying because of untreatable disease . . . They are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving.” Let’s help our members of Congress make this decision. ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING We will celebrate One Great Hour of Sharing on March 13. One Great Hour of Sharing raises funds to support the administrative expenses of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR is the relief agency of the United Methodist Church. When disaster strikes, UMCOR and its community partners are there to provide emergency assistance. UMCOR also sticks around, providing whatever help a community needs to get back on its feet. One Great Hour of Sharing supports UMCOR's efforts by ensuring that when UMCOR asks for contributions, all of the money raised goes to relief operations, not administrative expenses.
