30 days is enough time to develop new habits or abandon old hab-its. If you are serious about wanting to change something, how about giving yourself 30 days to practice it every day?Google’s chief engineer Matt Cutts suggests you try something new for 30 days. He suggests you make a list of things you’ve always wanted to do and do one thing for 30 days at a time. He took one picture every day. As a result, he was able to be aware of where he was and what he was doing every day and not to let a single moment be wasted. Though you may think that trying things on a daily basis is incon-sequential, constantly trying small things will eventually bring about a significant change to your life. How about starting with making a small yet impactful change that will give your life a fresh perspective?

Tuned InThe Joy of Communicating

By Hee-gyeong Yoo (Poet)

W e often hear certain words when we start the New Year: good for-tune, success and wish. Most words with a hopeful nuance are things that we feel we do not have

enough of. So, we hope that the meanings of these words will come true. Unfortunately, however, such things do not come easily. Indeed, that’s why we make New Year’s resolutions every year.I will bring up one of the new-year words “challenge”. It is a noun, but it feels more like a verb because it requires movement. Challenge requires will, persever-

ance, and practice, and that’s why it’s difficult. Look around yourself. The books and workbooks that you haven’t finished, the musical instruments and exercise equipment that are collecting dust in the corner. Of course, a cycle of challenge and failure is common-place. So, there are so many people who just wish to spend the year safely without any New Year’s resolu-tions or goals. However, nothing will change if you do nothing. The story I want to tell you now can be sum-marized as an adventure of an ordinary office worker. I hope that this story will stimulate your interest in chal-lenge and amuse you a little.

Writer Hee-gyeong Yoo

Born in Seoul in 1980, Hee-gyeong Yoo graduated from the Seoul Institute of the Arts and Korea National University of Arts and made her debut as a writer through the Chosun Ilbo annual spring literary contest in 2008. Hee-gyeong Yoo has published books of poems, such as <Words of this morning> and <Your place-How to grow as a tree>.

I was an editor in a publishing company with 10 years’ experience until last May. But, I handed in my resigna-tion all of a sudden. I wanted to operate a bookstore. A bookstore specializing solely in collections of poems. Everyone was against it. As a matter of fact, I’m not an impulsive person who makes a habit of doing the unex-pected. Rather, I’m more of a petit bourgeois person, full of anxiety and apprehension. I had to really sum-mon up my courage. I looked for a store, ordered books, put them on the shelves, and open the book-store. I constantly thought of giving up and hesitated. After all that, I opened a bookstore and everything is going well now. Now, I’m asking myself “Why in the world did I pick up this seemingly reckless challenge?” At last, an image came to my mind. It was a couple of winters ago. I had a bad cold, and took the day off to go to hospital. The street on the weekday morning was quiet. I was sick and my mind was sick, too. I was quickening my steps while tending my feverish forehead. I stopped in front of a rice-cake shop. It was due to something I saw inside the shop. Three men, who seemed to be the employees of the rice-cake shop, were having their meals. Their late breakfast after a hard morning’s work looked as holy as holy can be. I felt ashamed and supremely touched at

the same time. Forgetting my own pain, I asked myself: what hardships do I actually face? How much do I love my life and work? Are my meals as beautiful as what they are eating now? I wanted to have meals just like that. Meals resulting from hard work. I felt like crying.I am now standing in a small bookstore. I feel quite uneasy as I am not making as much money as I used to. But, I have no regrets. Far from being full of regrets, I am happy quite often. I do what I want to do with peo-ple who love poems. All this was possible because I picked up the challenge. How about listing things you can do no matter how trivial they may be? I’d like to recommend the conclusion, the happiness that follows.

In the limelightThe Joy of Communicating

I have a tendency to leave things out of laziness, but to enjoy agonizing over them all the same. I continue to reflect on who I am and what I do. If I think it will be fun, then I go ahead. Whatever I do, I do it to the end. KCC explored the justifiable life of announcer Sang-hyeop Lee, who has continued to defy his limits and move beyond himself.

Going Beyond MyselfAnnouncer Sang-hyeop Lee

A nnouncer Sang-hyeop Lee composes songs and poems, plays guitar and takes photographs. This is why he has many titles, including announcer, singer-song writer and poet. When he was a student

at university, he won bronze prize at the 9th Yoo Jae Ha Music Concours and recently released a solo proj-ect titled “Ego Trip”. Since releasing his first mini album in 2010, Lee has continued to engage in and enjoy music. In 2012, he became a poet with the publi-cation of “Beyond” and five other poems through rec-ommendation by <Hyundae Munhak>, a literary mag-azine, and, in 2013, he held a photographic exhibition titled Time Museum. In this exhibition, he presented a selection of photographs that he took during the film-ing of the KBS road documentary Seokguram, which was filmed in over ten countries worldwide. It is not easy to master even one field in this busy world. But Lee has achieved success in so many fields, despite his saying, “I am lazy, rather than hard-work-ing.” Is he talented or simply greedy? He definitely has talent in all these jobs and he is not too greedy to be satisfied with just one job. He is not challenge-addict-ed, either. He began to do these jobs simply because he felt drawn to them and these jobs have been very natu-ral to him and done for a long time. “I have been doing these things for quite a long time and I didn’t start them at once. I have liked writing and taking photographs from when I went to a university, which is when I first taught myself how to play guitar and compose songs. If you stick to one thing for a long time, you will face a moment when you intuit that it’s the right time. I had also enjoyed these jobs for a long time and, one day, I reached the time and released my songs. That’s it. I didn’t seek to win a prize or become a professional poet.”His ambition always had reason. When it comes to Yoo Jae Ha Music Concours where he was awarded for his ability as a song writer, he attended the competition because of Dong-ik Cho (one of the musicians who led Korean pop music in the 1980s). He says he decided to participate in the competition to meet with Cho, who was his object of envy for a long time. He became an announcer for a clear reason. He was attracted by the job when he was a member of a university broadcast-ing club, and finally he knocked on the door of KBS. Actually, he knocked on the door three times. In other words, he was rejected twice, but he never gave up. And that was because he had a reason, or motivation.

“I prefer ‘reclaiming a garden’ to ‘fighting and gaining’. I like reclaiming my land and planting and growing crops in the dream garden. You don’t need to be obsessed with results. You know, farmers will never quit farming due to one bad harvest. A true challenging spirit means continuously cultivating my garden with-out being afraid to fail and hopefully think that, some day, I will be able to achieve results.” He released his first album in an era when people are not willing to buy albums any more. “My album CDs are still piled high in my house.” When he gave me three CDs, I saw a spark in his eyes that showed his resolution for making a better album next time. Lee has recently been preparing for his first collection of poems to be published this year. He says that, as he gets older, he looks forward to starting woodwork as well. He is a person who has clear likes and dislikes. He never hesitates striving to do what he likes and, through his perseverance, inevitably ends up achieving great success. He is planting musical notes and sowing poetic words in his dream garden even right now.

Announcer Sang-hyeop Lee started his literary career as a poet through <Hyundae Munhak>, and is releasing albums while engaging in the solo project called “Ego Trip”.

A better future The Joy of Communicating

KCC is pioneering new markets with its constant technological development and steadfast challenging spirit. The company has set out to become a leader in global markets on the basis of its two competitive edges: solid technology and superior quality. We give a round up below of the main products that are leading KCC’s cease-less challenge on the global market.

KCC unveiled the excellence of its silicones at various international Exhibitions.

First-mover advantage gives thebest long-term results: Silicone for CosmeticsKCC developed the first domestic silicone for cos-metics in 2006 and has established a strong pres-ence in the global market by participating in inter-national cosmetic ingredients fairs, including Chi-na’s largest cosmetic ingredients fair PCHI and the world’s renowned In-Cosmetics. Thanks to such efforts, multinationals such as Unilever, Coty, Hen-kel and Beiersdorf have conducted joint R&D proj-ects with KCC and visited KCC.At fairs, KCC has promoted its products to interna-tional manufacturers and exhibited new innova-tions such as silicone wax, amino oil and emulsion, as well as applied cosmetic formula samples such as CC cream and overnight mask. Thanks to the full exhibition of its technology power as a specialized silicone maker, KCC has received a positive response from many customers, who have been particularly impressed with the methods of applying KCC sili-cone to customer products. KCC plans to expand its market presence by focusing on exhibiting its dif-ferentiation points through the development of a wider range of specialized products.

Bringing Mobile Paints to International MarketsKCC’s mobile paints are readily applicable to wireless products connected via communication lines such as mobile phones, laptops, and cameras, as well as to wear-ables such as smart watches. With the tremendous growth of the mobile paint market, KCC has targeted exports in this area, with China and Vietnam as its twin export bases. China is a thriving market, responsible for the production of the majority of mobile phones, com-puters and automobiles in the world, with more than 80% of the world’s mobile phones being manufactured in China. At the same time, Vietnam, which has been chosen as an overseas production base by many leading Korean home appliance manufacturers and mobile phone manufacturers, is emerging as a big market com-parable to China. In line with these market trends, KCC operates separate functional teams covering sales, development, and design in Korea and China and develops general coatings applicable to mobile materials to accommodate market trends and customer needs. In recent years, domestic and global companies have either been moving or expanding their mobile production bases to China, Viet-nam and India. Accordingly, KCC plans to run local mobile paint production bases in each country. KCC has so far focused its efforts on establishing a global supply-chain, given its challenger status in the mobile paint mar-ket. However, the company this year plans to focus on supporting the advanced development of new models by global mobile companies and accelerate its forays in global markets.

KCC’s mobile paints are widely used for wireless products and wearable devices.

Expanding PVC Flooring Lineup to Target Global Markets KCC recently started to make earnest forays into international markets with its PVC flooring, and the main target markets include China, North America, and Vietnam. In China and North America, the company is focused on selling PVC flooring used for construction (foaming and non-foaming), and in Vietnam, the company is focused on selling PVC flooring for buses. When it comes to flooring, design is as important as functionality. For that reason, KCC is developing designs (colors, patterns) and specifications for locally demanded products based on the analysis of customer needs it has carried out through consultation with local dealers and by visiting international exhibitions. In 2016, KCC partici-pated for the first time in Domotex Asia which was held in Shanghai, China, accelerating its foray into the Chinese market. In the future, KCC plans to partic-ipate in many other flooring-related exhibitions overseas to help discover new customers and present localized products that can help it secure new customers in North America, South America, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

Aiming for World Class Powder CoatingsKCC’s powder coatings, which rank top in the Korean market has been aggressively marketing overseas since the late 1990s. In fact, KCC supplies 30-35% of the total output of its powder coatings to overseas customers every year and competes with world-renowned paint manufacturers in global markets. KCC’s main export items are a powder coating for pipes which is sold as a coating for pipelines, water pipes and a powder coating for re-bars, which is used to coat re-bars. KCC has gradually diversi-fied its export items, which now include powder coatings used for automobile parts and cars’ aluminum wheels, while the company is also expanding its exporting regions to include the Middle East, China, the US, Asia, and Europe. KCC has been widening the sales promotion activities performed jointly by its Chinese subsidiaries, and the results of this initiative are expected to be realized in the near future. KCC plans to expand its Middle East-based overseas business into new markets, including North America, China, and Southeast Asia and to diversify its products to cement its position as the world’s top-ranking powder coating maker.

Attracting the most attention is KCC’s silicone product for cush-ion compacts, which are the main contributor to the Korean Wave in the cosmetics field. Cushion compact products have gained popularity thanks to their persistency and water repellency, in addition to their lightness and pleasant moistness. Silicones for cosmetics are the main materials to embody such texture. SeraSense SF MTM is a product that has high volatility, causes no skin irritation, and gives a luxurious yet not-dry feel to cos-metics. Used as a base oil for cushion compacts, SeraSense SF MTM gives lightness to those products and helps them attach to the skin quickly. SeraSense SF PTM adds luster to the skin when used in cosmetics. *Emulsifiers such as SeraSol SC 83-A+ and SeraSol SC 86A are very important raw materials that help cos-metic ingredients such as silicone and oil to stably mix with purified water. SeraSense AC, RB is a functional raw material used in cushion compacts that form glossy and highly adhesive films. SeraSense AC, RB embodies the light spreadability and high persistency of cushion compacts. In step with the changes in the cosmetics market, KCC is also investing heavily in R&D for its silicone products for personal care, including *elastomers (SeraSnow SP 13 and SeraSilk PD) that absorb sebum and give smoothness to the skin, and silicone emulsions (SeraSilk EM and SeraShine EM) that have enhanced ease of use in formulations. Thanks to these efforts, the use of KCC products is steadily increasing in Amorepacific and LG Household & Health Care, Korea’s first and second largest cos-metics companies, respectively. In addition, the share of KCC products in global companies such as Unilever, Coty, Henkel and Beiersdorf is steadily increasing as well. Going forward, KCC plans to continuously expand its domestic and overseas market share through finding new applications for products in the cos-metics field, pioneering new overseas markets, and developing customized products.

Cosmetics Raw Material Market Growing with the Cosmetics Industry If you take a look at the recent trends in the cosmetics market, you will notice significant growth in the functional cosmetics market. Functional cosmetics are products that represent a sort of cross between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. While general cosmetics emphasize safety, functional cosmetics boast not only safety, but also other various benefits and useful effects, such as whitening, wrinkle improvement, and ultraviolet ray shielding. Statistics show that multi-functional cosmetics with two or more of the functions mentioned above perform best in the market. The reason for such popularity seems to be that by using them, time-scarce people can benefit from a variety of functions with-out having to use each individual functional product. At the same time, in the cosmetics raw material market, there is an increasing need for functionality and, by extension, for multi-functional ingredients that confer two or more functions, in fin-ished cosmetic products.

KCC Silicone for Cosmetics with Differentiated Functional ProductsKCC is investing heavily in the development of high-functioning, multi-functional, and differentiated silicone products for cos-metics. KCC has successively developed silicone products with varied functions, establishing a lineup of functional silicones for cosmetics. KCC’s range of silicones for cosmetics include *Sera-Sense, *SeraSol, and *SeraShine.

IR52 Jang Young Shil AwardLead-free solder for glass heating element terminals

Our Outstanding TechnologyThe Joy of Learning

KAC introduced an advanced eco-friendly technology, developing a “lead-free solder for glass heating element terminal” that uses indium instead of lead, which is regarded as the main culprit of air pollution. Its unique technology, which found the best indium mixing ratio, resulted in its winning of the IR52 Jang Young Shil Award for Week 40 of 2016.

The “lead-free solder for glass heating element terminal” was selected as the winner of the IR52 Jang Young Shil Award for Week 40 of 2016, jointly sponsored by the Korea Industrial Technology Association and Maeil Business News Korea.

Mini InterviewQ. What is the significance of development of the lead-free solder for glass heating element terminal and what are its features? A. It is particularly significant in that we developed our own cost-competitive mixing ratio that does not infringe on the indium mixing ratio patent owned by our competitor. What’s more, the lead-free solder is wire-type solder, which is the same as the conventional leaded solder. We can produce it without changing the soldering equipment and process conditions. Since we don’t need to make any additional investment in equipment, we can maintain production efficiency.

Q. I am curious about the direction and future plan of the lead-free solder for glass heating element terminal R&D. A. We are planning to continuously check if the product we just developed can be applied stably, and thoroughly check quality by listening to the opinions of workers on the automotive assembly lines of our major customers. We will seek to find ways to further reduce the indium content or find a cheaper material to enhance our cost competitiveness.

Kuk-bum Lee, Tempering Technology Research Team, KAC

Automotive glass has h e a t i n g w i r e f o r removing humidity and frost in winter. These heating wires

must have terminals for power supply. The material used to install the terminals is the “lead-free sol-der for glass heating element ter-minal”. Copper terminals and glass are heterogeneous materials with different coefficients of expansion. In a driving environment ranging from -20℃ to +90℃, the glass is likely to be broken due to thermal shock. As they expand and shrink differently with variations in tem-perature, the glass fails to with-stand the force, and breaks. In the past, to reduce the stress between the glass and the terminal, solder made from lead was used as it is very flexible to changes in temper-ature. As the European Union

revised the “End-of-Life Vehicle Directive” and prohibited the use of lead in solder, however, i t became necessary to develop a material that could replace lead. To this, KAC, its customer Hyundai Motors and Heesung Material Ltd. put their heads together to develop lead-free solder. The ultimate goal of the project was to maintain the same level of quality as the product of its competitor, which commer-cialized lead-free solder for glass for the first time, but avoid infringe-ment of its patent. It conducted research and arrived at the conclu-sion that if indium was added instead of lead, it would be able to make solder that does not break the glass. However, the research soon ran into a brick wall. As its competi-tor had a patent on the optimal mixing ratio, it had to find a new mixing ratio. After an extensive

period of trial and error, KAC suc-ceeded in finding a stable indium mixing ratio that would not break the glass. The lowered melting point helped the solder melt down in the summer heat. The secret to preventing the lowering of the melting point was to find an appro-priate element to be added to the indium. It selected six elements, and evaluated over 100 specimens with different contents, and was able to lower the content of indium by appropriately adding copper and zinc. It successfully completed the quality test in the harsh envi-ronment of the American desert, and passed the reliability evalua-tion conducted by customers, and began its mass production. The lead-free solder for glass heating element terminal is going to be used in various models in the future.

Kuk-bum Lee of Tempering Technology Research Team is checking on the lead-free solder for glass heating element terminals attached on auto glass.

You can peer into the yesterday, today and tomorrow of the Korean paint industry at the KCC Ulsan Plant, which has led the domestic paint industry since it was opened in 1975 through continued technical development, process upgrade and introduction of more efficient pro-duction equipment. Home to the Korean paint industry, the Ulsan Plant is now seeking to advance into overseas markets based on its advanced quality management and eco-friendly products.

Home to the Korean Paint Industry

KCC made its debut in the paint industry by opening a paint plant in Ulsan in 1975. Since then, it

expanded its production to include all areas of the paint industry, including shipbuilding paints, con-structional paints, automotive paints, industrial paints and PCM paints, making it a leader in the Korean paint industry through its advanced technology and quality. In 2012, under the quality first pol-icy, KCC opened a new plant featur-ing cutting-edge automation sys-tems and advanced process man-agement systems and it has since produced eco-friendly high quality automotive paint and resins, becom-ing recognized in the process for its outstanding quality and process management capabilities. The new plant is a 4-story building with the total floor area of 50,000㎡, an

operating mixing process on the 4th floor, a dispersion process on the 3rd floor, finishing/color matching on the 2nd floor and packaging and shipping on the 1st floor. The control room controls the entire manufacturing process in real time, while the plant fea-tures full automation of the entire process ranging from raw material feed to packaging, helping it secure unrivaled production and quality competitiveness. The new plant controls the progress of all produc-tion processes and the process con-ditions and equipment status through MES (Manufacturing Exe-cution System) and grasps quality/logistics management data in real time through work history tracking management. The plant has intro-duced an online test system that transmits accurate process infor-mation and product test results to the QIS (Quality Information Sys-

tem) and provides statistical analy-sis. Such cutting-edge automation systems have raised quality com-petitiveness and enabled advanced quality management. The plant has also introduced a state-of-the-art DCS (Distributed Control System) for paint resin production, which can be con-trolled by the control room. All raw materials are automatically fed into production based on process automation code and recipes to secure uniformity and stability of quality. The significantly increased batch size allows a reduction in manufactur ing cos ts and an increase in price competitiveness, contributing to winning new sales at home and abroad. Recently, Axalta, a global paint manufactur-er, visited the new plant. They showed a keen interest in KCC’s automated facilities and DCS pro-duction system and expressed their

admiration at the advanced quality management system based on QIS. The new plant is the first paint plant to apply a clean system to the entire plant. This enables the plant to prevent any foreign substance or contaminant from getting inside, as well as serving to control indoor air quality and minimize the emis-sion of pollutants, making it a true green workplace. The water soluble automotive paints that KCC pro-duces at Ulsan Plant through its own water solubilization technolo-gy are the result of KCC’s technolo-gies and commitment to greener paint and coating products. The new plant offers brilliant

results through continued R&D and product upgrade efforts. For example, the automotive paint product produced at Ulsan Plant was ranked first in Hyudai/Kia Motor’s paint supplier process evaluation for three years running from 2014 to 2016. The product is evaluated to have minimized short waves (0.3-1.2㎜), which hamper the sense of thickness of film on automobiles and provide a luxuri-ous paint film, securing emotional quality to satisfy higher consumer expectations. As a result of such advanced automotive paint tech-nologies that satisfy customer needs, Genesis EQ900 gained a

competitive edge over foreign pre-mium cars in terms of emotional quality of exterior design. Nominat-ed for Car of the Year 2017, Genesis EQ900 (G90 in North America) is promoting the innovation excel-lence of Hyundai Motor, leading to a global sales increase. Ulsan Plant is planning to move its production facilities for heavy duty coatings, electro deposition paints, PCM paint and industrial paints to the new plant gradually from 2018 to 2019, planning a second leap toward the future. Let’s look for-ward for Ulsan Plant to lead the 4th Industrial Revolution as a global paint maker.By Han-tae Lee

“Buy me that!” “No way, it’s too expensive.” A child pesters his mom to buy him a CarBot. CarBots are the latest toy craze sweeping the nation. The mom, having worn a troubled look for a moment, placates the child, saying, “It’s

too expensive. I’ll get it for you on your birthday.”Adults are also not free from it. From houses to cars, there are so many things you want to have, but you cannot have them all. Nothing in the world is infinitely available. Even time is limited; a day is 24 hours and a year 365 days. The numbers vary, but the limits don’t. Services are also provided within set limits. If you are not quick to go to a restaurant for lunch, you will have to wait for the people who have come there before you to finish their meals. Society only has so many finite resources. Economists call this fact “scarcity”. Given the limited nature of goods and services, there is an inevitable question of how to divide them. Dividing them poorly can entail conflict, which caused people to contemplate how to divide the various goods and services around the world. Economics originated from this conundrum. In other words, scarcity created economics. Differences in scarcity are represented in price. The greater the scarcity of a good, the higher its price. Like-wise, the smaller the scarcity of a good, the lower its price. However, there’s one important thing to note here. Scarcity doesn’t simply mean numbers. Scarcity is influenced by human desire. To put it in other terms, scarcity is the intensity of your desire to own some-thing. Then, what is rarity? Rarity is when something is considered precious due to its limited quantity. In other words, the scarcer something is, the higher likeli-hood of it being rare. For instance, why are diamonds more expensive than pearls? The reason is that there are fewer diamonds produced in the world than pearls. However, just because something is rare, doesn’t always mean that it is also scarce. In Korea, less horse-meat is produced than beef. But horsemeat is cheaper than beef in Korea. How come? It’s because there are more people who want beef than those who want horsemeat. In other words, beef is scarce, and horse-meat is rare. Scarcity can fluctuate. During the 2002 FIFA World

Cup Korea/Japan, tickets for games with the Korean team were not popular. However, that situation changed once South Korea made it to the last-16. The prices of tickets to the quarterfinals and semifinals skyrocketed. This was because despite the quantity of tickets remaining limited, there were lots more people willing to buy them. The Fox says to the Little Prince, “If you tame me, we’ll need each other. You’ll be the only boy in the world for me. I’ll be the only fox in the world for you.” The Little Prince realizes at last the meaning of scarcity, saying, “I am beginning to understand. There is a flower, and I think that she has tamed me.” The Little Prince himself watered the rose on his planet, put a glass cover over it, and got rid of warms from it. The rose was the only rose for the Little Prince. The Fox says, “What has made the rose so precious to you is the time you spent for her.” The Little Prince then decides to go back home to see the rose he has been tending. It is said that family members resemble each other. The same goes for friends. Friends are those who have, in effect, tamed each other, sharing times and experiences together. Muster your courage and talk to your family and friends. Tell them that they are people of great scarcity and rarity to you, and that you love them.

To acquire the ability to read the economy, you must first get familiar with the economy. KCC’s house organ <KCC> offers you common economic knowledge each month. It covers various areas, including film, literature, and popular culture, so that you can learn about the economy with fun and ease.

The Novella <The Little Prince> The Little Prince is a story about a Little Prince who has the last purity and beauty remaining in the world. French novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s m o s t f a m o u s w o r k i s celebrated for the author’s del icate observat ions and love for humanity. The book tells us the true nature of human love in a beautiful style.

Why Did the Little Prince Come Back to His Planet?

The Notions of Scarcity and Rarity Hidden in “The Little Prince”

While tending a rose on the Asteroid B612, the Little Prince tires of its pickiness and goes on a journey to another planet. The Little Prince then meets a Fox on Earth and decides to go back to his planet. Why did the Little Prince make such a decision? The Little Prince learned scarcity and rarity, and that is why he went back to where the rose that he had been tending was.

Correcting KonglishThe Joy of Learning

By Soo-kyung Lee (AllThatEnglish.com)

Common English mistakes that Koreans make

1) baggage ticket (X) → baggage claim check (O)Since the receipt issued by a carrier to a passenger for checked-in baggage is called “짐표” in Korean, it is easy to translate it as a “baggage ticket”. But the commonly used term for it in English is a “baggage claim check”, or simply “claim check”.» Where’s your baggage claim check?

2) conveyor (X) → baggage claim, baggage claim area (O)A conveyor belt is part of a baggage carousel, which is a device that delivers checked items to passengers at the baggage claim area. Since a conveyor belt only refers to part of a device, the correct way to call the device itself is a “baggage carousel”. However, it is much more common to say that you picked up your baggage at the baggage claim area (or simply at baggage claim).

» Could you tell me where the baggage claim area is?

3) label (라벨) (X) → baggage tag, luggage tag (O)The tag you put on your bag with your name and contact information is often called a “label” in Korea. It is important to note that “label” is a very commonly mispronounced word among Koreans. If you say “라벨”, an English speaker proba-bly won’t understand what you’re referring to. You have to say “레이블”. Pronunciation issues aside, this identification/contact information that you attach to your bag is commonly called a baggage tag or a luggage tag.

» Did you put your phone number on the baggage tag?

4) hand carry (X) → carry-on baggage, carry-on bag, carry-on (O)Many Koreans call the baggage you take with you on your flight “hand carry” because you use your hands to carry the baggage, but you should refer to them as “carry-on baggage”. The word “carry-on baggage” is used to collectively refer to everything, and each individual bag you’re carrying is called a “carry-on bag”. You can shorten both terms as “carry-on”.» Am I allowed to bring nuts to eat on the plane in my carry-on baggage?

This column will look at some of the pitfalls that Koreans tend to fall into when speaking English at the workplace. Let’s speak English the right way!

1) eye shopping (X) → window shopping (O)When we just browse without buying anything, we call it “eye shopping”. However, the correct expression is “window shop-ping”.» Let’s go window shopping.

2) A/S (after service) (X) → warranty (O)When you buy a product and the manufacturer promises to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time, it is called a warranty.» This came with a two-year warranty.

3) vinyl bag (X) → plastic bag (O)When you buy groceries, you put them items in a plastic bag, not a vinyl bag. » Do you need a plastic bag, ma’am?

4) D/C (X) → discount (O)D/C is shorthand for discount, but native speakers of English do not use this expression. You need to use the whole word.» Can you give me a discount if I buy two?

1) arbeit (X) → part-time job (O)Arbeit is a part of everyday vocabulary for Koreans, but it is a word of German origins, meaning “work” or “labor”. As such, an English speaker will not understand what you mean if you say you have “arbeit”. A proper English word for it is a “part-time job”. » Do you have a part-time job?

2) salaryman (X) → white-collar worker, office worker (O)The term “salaryman” is grammatically and colloquially incorrect. “Salaried man” is the grammatically correct way of saying it, but even this isn’t used in everyday English. “White-

collar worker”, “businessperson” and “office worker” are the terms of choice for the native English speaker. » I don’t want to be a white-collar worker like everyone else. I want to be my own boss.

3) meeting (X) → date (O)The word “meeting” is used much more broadly by Koreans than it is by the English-speaking population. In English, a meeting refers to a gathering of people to discuss some-thing, often to talk about business. If the gathering is of romantic nature, it is called a “date”.» Have you ever tried group dating?

If you work in a corporate environment, then you’ve got to attend various dining events. Business etiquette is particularly important if you have to meet an important business partner or customer. This is because although business meetings can be uncomfortable and distressing, they can also be great opportunities. Let’s take a look at the different business dining etiquette of each country and create classy dining occasions.

Each country’s table etiquette is similar to one another, but there are nonethe-less slight variations, so please don’t confuse one with another! Even the proper way to use a spoon varies by country. In China, you need to turn spoons upside down once you’ve used them, and this is to not let others see any remnants of food left on them. In Korea and Vietnam, people eat soup with a spoon, but in Japan and China, people drink soup with the soup bowl picked up and eat food with chopsticks at the same time. In addition, in China, people leave some of the food served to them uneaten to show that they’ve enjoyed the food. So, lest you come across as rude, make sure not to eat all of the food served to you. The general rule is that you hold your fork and knife so that together they create the shape of the Chinese character for number eight and that you raise your fork with its back facing upward. While eating, you put your fork and knife down with the eight shape maintained, and after eating, you gather your fork and knife neatly and put them on the right side of your plates. Other than making a slurping sound when eating udon and other noodle-based food in Japan, it is considered rude to make noises when eating or to let your eating utensils bump against each other anywhere in the world.

“ I’d like to make a reservation for dinner.”

The etiquette rules you need to follow before preparing a meal are similar in many countries around the world. It is safe to make a reservation approxi-mately one week in advance and to call the restaurant to ensure your reserva-tion one or two days beforehand. On the day itself, it’s recommended that you make an arrangement to arrive at the restaurant together with your clients or that you arrive at the restaurant ahead of time and wait for your clients there. If your business needs extra space, you are advised to book a private room. With regard to your clothes, dress to suit your client’s style. If your client wears a suit and a tie, use that as your reference, and wear business shoes and as few accessories as possible. Dressing in an overly unique or casual style may not suit the restaurant’s atmosphere and can make you come across as inexpe-rienced, so be careful. When you sit at a table, please keep in mind that the seats far from the entrance with a good view are for the guests and those near passages or the entrance for the host, and allocate seats accordingly.

The characteristics of each country are shown prominently in the process of eating a meal. A Western-style table setting can easily fluster you because of the wide array of dishes and cups placed on the table. However, you only need to remember one thing: “Water on the right, bread on the left, from outside in!” This means that in your seat, you eat the bread on your left and drink the water on your right. And you pick the eating utensils spread on both sides of your plates from outside to in. The Japanese-style table setting is similar to Korean-style, with the difference that you place chopsticks horizontally on the table. The reason is that in Japan, it has been thought since the old days that if the end of chopsticks point towards the person sitting across from you, this represents a threat to them. When it comes to Chinese cuisine, you usually eat at a round table, and cold dishes are generally served first, followed by fried or roasted dishes. If the occasion is one where you eat a meal as well as drink a bit of alcohol, it is com-mon courtesy to drink one glass of alcohol before eating your meal.

“ I ordered the five-course meal.”

If the occasion is one where you dine with your superior or client, it’s better if you wait until the person finishes their meal, and it’s preferable for you to eat at the same speed as your fellow diners. If you have finished your meal ahead of other diners, put your spoon over your bowl and keep it there until the per-son finishes their meal and, when they’ve finished their meal, move the spoon onto the table. It’s important for you not to be so immersed in eating and to proactively create a pleasant atmosphere by making conversation with an appropriate amount of humor. It is common courtesy for the host to pay for the meal, and you must make sure to ask for the restaurant’s understanding in advance so that your bill won’t be handed to your table during the meal. It is common courtesy to thank your guest politely if they have paid for the meal ahead of you.

KCC E&C StoryThe Joy of Sharing

Seoul Yeouido is South Korea’s financial hub and it changes every day. As Yeouido’s dilapidated 1970s-built buildings are gradually replaced with new ones, the area’s street scenery is changing rapidly. K-Tower, a Yeouido business facility being built by KCC E&C, is fast establishing itself as Yeouido’s newest landmark.

Giving a Refreshing Look to Korea’s Financial Hub Yeouido

K-Tower Construction Site

If you walk above ground from Yeouido Station on Seoul Subway Line 5 and Saetgang Station on Seoul Subway Line 9, you can see the construction site of K-Tower, which is being led by KCC E&C with the aim of completing it by the end of March. K-Tower com-prises five stories below and fifteen stories above ground, and it has a stylish exterior created to channel the restrained beauty of the Yeouido financial district and the transparency of open finance.“Business facilities began popping up in Yeouido in the 1970s and, over time, their designs have become dated and in need of an update. K-Tower is part of this phe-nomenon. KCC E&C is in charge of demolishing the existing building on site (with two stories below and eleven stories above ground) and constructing the new building, while the company is focused on making this construction a disaster-free and accident-free zone.” Tower is situated in Yeouido, which is densely lined with business facilities related to finance and broad-casting. K-Tower has a total floor area of 47,364㎡, and its basement levels 1 and 2 will feature neighborhood living facilities, while business facilities will be housed on floors 2 to 15.

The First Construction Based on the Besto Beam MethodThe construction competitiveness of KCC E&C is hid-den from view. K-Tower is an eco-friendly building which is planned to receive the highest energy efficien-cy rating, as well as an “Excellent” green building rat-ing. “Glass buildings have high levels of heat loss, which makes it difficult to achieve energy efficiency. That’s why, for the building, we used KCC’s double low-E glass, which is high-performance coated glass, as well as high-performance thermal insulation materials from KCC to minimize heat loss and improve energy efficiency by 1.5 times. In addition, we used the geo-thermal energy of the basement levels to achieve a renewable energy supply rate of more than 5% and, as for construction materials, we chiefly used KCC’s specialized materials that have acquired the eco-friendly mark.”K-Tower is attracting attention as a trendy building that not only boasts cutting-edge exterior design, but also outstanding energy saving and environmental properties. One interesting thing to note is that the newly built building is higher than the existing one by four stories, and that is attributable to KCC E&C’s

innovative besto beam method. “Besto beams are steel structures used at the top of each floor. The besto beam method combines the benefits of U-shaped composite beams and H-shaped steel beams. With composite beams, you can make the building’s floor height small-er than when we use steel beams. While composite beams are excellent at reducing floor height, they decrease construction competitiveness. To resolve this issue, we attached steel beams to the joints of compos-ite beams to improve the ease of construction. K-Tower is the first building to which KCC E&C has applied this besto beam method.”

Unexpected Issues, Resolved through Communication There have been many twists and turns over the two-year construction period on site. As construction work was conducted together with demolition work, which is not the contractor’s area of expertise, unexpected situations occurred in quick succession. For instance, during the demolition work, it was found that the underground structures of the adjacent buildings were intertwined, while waste oil - which is landfill waste - and rock layers were also discovered. “The obstacles to the demolition work were quickly taken care of because such obstacles lead directly to delays in construction. KCC E&C and the companies associated with the construction including the contrac-tor, the designer, and the supervisor put their heads together to find a breakthrough, rapidly changing the design, construction method, and contract. This pro-vided a valuable learning experience about demolition risk.” In some cases, unexpected events became oppor-tunities. As “Diagonal Plane Control by Street Width”, which entered into effect in 1962, was abolished on

There was a time when we faced a crisis caused by processing delays due to the worsened financial condition of our suppliers. In order to resolve this problem, we had to make a quick decision. So we looked for ways to minimize risk in the following construction periods through

vigorous discussions with the head office. We once again learned about the importance

of quick decisions and cooperation in a crisis situation.

We have put forth our best efforts into this project with passion and hard work. The completion of the building is now just around the corner. Let’s continue the good work in union to the end so that K-Tower

will stand tall as Yeouido’s best building, representing an excellent outcome in

all areas technology, quality, and safety.

We have been working very hard for the completion of the building. We have tried our best to achieve optimal synergy through smooth conversations between various divisions such as substructure, concrete work, window work, electric work, and

finishing. We have now reached the end point. Utilizing this experience, I will take part in

other on-site projects with the best technology going forward.

Dreams and Challenges!

What I think I learned the most as a person responsible for safety management is the importance of communication. We tried to listen to the situations and troubles of workers and to actively respond to them. Thanks to these

efforts, we were able to create a more developmental working environment.

We will continue to lead true change with our hearts.

Many unexpected events can happen at urban construction sites. Thorough reviewing and planning is a prerequisite for smooth, incident-free process management. I will do my best to secure quality for the remaining period by

I learned that process management, whose aim is to maintain stability amid collisions small and large between numerous divisions, all starts with a little attention. Just as small grains of sand pile up to

of checking the details every step of the way.

With the existing steel beams supporting each floor, we had no choice but to set each floor’s height high due to the height of the H-shaped structure itself. Besto beams are able to resolve this issue because they have combined steel beams’ ease of construction with U-shaped composite beams which do not require high floor heights. With the use of best beams, you can reduce floor height by 200-400㎜ compared to when using steel beams. For example, if the building is ten stories high, you can secure an additional space of 2-4m. They can be installed regardless of site conditions and column type. KCC E&C plans to demonstrate the excellence of its besto beam method far and wide through the K-tower.

May 1, 2015, the elevation of buildings was completely revised. Sudden changes occurring on site tend to quickly become setbacks rather than benefits. Howev-er, KCC E&C was able to turn this crisis into opportu-nity. “If you were to apply the road slope limit, which was designed to ensure better views and prospects, you would have to design the top of the building at an angle. And, consequently, the construction work would become more difficult. However, we completely modi-fied the elevation following the abolition of the law. As a result, we were able to change the building’s vertical mass, reduce cost, and improve constructability, as well as preventing potential defects that can occur with an inclined plane, such as water leaks. From the client’s point of view, the utilization of internal space was increased and the volume ratio was maximized. Conse-quently, it was a win-win change for everyone.”Supervisor Won-ik Kim stresses that cooperation and communication were critical to identifying the best answers to unexpected issues that arose.

Yeouido’s Development Potential Stimulates ChallengeConsiderable effort was put into on-site communica-tion. All the personnel involved convened right before

getting to work, as well as right before leaving work: they identified actions and major management objects for the day, and exchanged opinions. In addition, all divisions reported things to be reviewed and discussed them together, creating a liberal communication cul-ture. Thanks to such fluent communication, the K-Tower construction site has maintained accident-free and disaster-free operations and is on track for successful completion in March.“As the building is situated in an area densely lined with finance and broadcasting related companies and institutions, many significant stakeholders were con-cerned with the construction site. For that reason, we gathered our strength to achieve safer and cleaner on-site management. As a result, we received exemplary site commendations from the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Yeongdeungpo-gu Office, which are the project’s licensing authorities.”You have to always remain vigilant when on site, but the members were able to cheer themselves up as their sweat and efforts came to fruition and were widely acknowledged. K-Tower is considered to be a success-ful reconstruction case because the value of its real estate has risen significantly compared to at the begin-ning of the construction period. KCC E&C has proved its competitiveness with K-Tower in Yeouido, a site which has unlimited potential.

The construction of Yeouido K-Tower is now almost at an end. I will do my best to keep my initial enthusiasm and determination going until the completion of the project.

I hope that the time we spent on site can be remembered with a sense of

fulfillment and pride.

Business facilities should aim to achieve cleanliness and, to that end, it is necessary to review the design and carry out construction in a thorough manner. To achieve the best quality, we have been constantly communicating and consulting with other divisions and specialist

companies, and we will prove our ability by constructing the best building in

Yeouido.

Vietnam is a long and relatively thin coun-try measuring 1,700㎞ in length. Viet-nam is 1.5 times larger than the Korean Peninsula and its northern and southern cities have a totally different atmosphere

to one another. Ho Chi Minh City, a major city in southern Vietnam and the economic hub of Vietnam, boasts an air of liberty and sophistication. The Notre-Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office which were constructed when Vietnam was part of French Indo-china remain functional and give the city an exotic look. Locals are famously open minded and open for business, not least in terms of the sheer number of global corporations who have significant operations based here. It’s perhaps this open-mindedness that gives the city its laid-back and liberal feel. The city presents unique vibes that blend “local” and “global”. Having a cup of strong coffee as you relax with friends

in an alley cafe might be best way to blend in with this city. Vietnam is the world’s second largest coffee exporter. Nine out of ten tourists to Vietnam buy coffee as a souvenir. Why is Vietnamese coffee so popular? One reason is its impressive taste: in blind test tastes, it always impresses and is sure to lead to sales. Viet-namese coffee has strong flavors and scents. Vietnam-ese coffee is mostly robusta, which is used in instant coffee and is widely known as “mix coffee”. Robusta is made from a species of coffee bean that’s much sturdi-er than Coffee arabica. It grows well in a poor environ-ment and features a bitter taste. The land and climate of southern and central Vietnam is well-suited to grow-ing robusta. In the 1990s when coffee prices went up due to the climate change issue in Brazil, Vietnam increased the yield of robusta to gain the title of the world’s No.2 coffee producer. The city shows different environmental conditions and a unique coffee culture

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is a city where you can readily see elderly men toasting a baguette or sipping a cup of drip coffee as they sit on chairs. Ho Chi Minh City is also the urban powerhouse driving the future of the Vietnamese economy. It is the best city where you can enjoy a cup of delicious coffee at an antique cafe.

compared to cities in Western countries. People in Ho Chi Minh City prefer enjoying coffee in a laid back way to walking hastily with coffee in hand. In addition, Vietnamese people prefer local coffee brands to imports and hardly buy the famous coffee brands you would otherwise import. Famously, Starbucks, which runs more than 1,000 stores in South Korea alone, struggles in Vietnam. Then, what makes Vietnamese traditional coffee so special? First of all, you need a cof-fee Phin filter to create the authentic taste of Vietnam-ese coffee. Vietnamese people use a coffee Phin filter instead of an espresso machine. Put coffee powder in the filter, add water and you’ll have a cup of Vietnam-ese coffee darker than an espresso. The taste is as bitter as its darkness. If you order coffee at random without proper knowledge, you might be surprised at its taste. There are largely three ways for Vietnamese people to drink coffee. The most common way is black coffee,

which resembles an ice Americano. As Vietnam is a hot country, locals like drinking a glass of ice coffee. Locals like to dilute the bitter taste of coffee with ice cubes and add sugar. By adding condensed milk, you can make “Ca Phe Sua Da”. Containing condensed milk, Ca Phe Sua Da is sweet and soft. Most coffee lovers in Vietnam love Ca Phe Sua Da. You can also choose “Ca Phe Trung”, which is an egg coffee that you can only taste in Vietnam. It is made by pouring hot coffee in egg cream made from yolk and vanilla syrup and it features a unique taste that combines unique softness with bit-ter coffee. These kinds of coffee are offered by the three top Vietnamese coffee brands: Highlands, Trung-Nguyen and Phuc Long. If you look for a more Ho Chi Minh-like cafe than normal franchise cafes, visit a unique old apartment block in District 1 of the city. You can see the trend of Ho Chi Minh City from the cafe block remodeled from an old, cheap apartment block.

Established in 2009, KCV Ho Chi Minh sales office deals with various paint products including indus-trial, architectural, automotive paints, and heavy duty coatings for ships as well as other architectural interior and exterior materials. Ho Chi Minh sales department is establishing its position through close teamwork and inter-department cooperation. Let’s meet KCV’s Ho Chi Minh sales office as it strengthens KCC’s future competitiveness with long-term strategy and rapid market response.

“Quick Response to Market Changes is Crucial!”

KCV(KCC Vietnam) Ho Chi Minh Sales Department

K CC’s Vietnam Ho C h i M i n h s a l e s department (aka KCV Ho Chi Minh sales department)

consists of three teams: the indus-trial sales team, the construction direct sales team, and the con-struction in-can team. The indus-trial sales team is engaged in gen-eral sales activities spanning many industries, including PCM, auto-mobiles, and construction. The construction direct sales team is engaged in leading sales and man-agement activities so that promo-tion activities conducted on site and toward construction companies can help support a healthy sales pipe-line. And the construction in-can team is an agency sa les team

responsible for the installation, management and technical support of KCC’s in-can products. “The KCV Ho Chi Minh sales office operates three departments: the sa les department, the production depart-ment and the management depart-ment. We regularly host communi-cation sessions to improve coordi-nation among our departments and increase overall work efficiency. We are actively strengthening our teamwork through continuous communication so that every opin-ion can be taken into account as much as possible.”As assistant manager Jun-hyung Choi said, the KCV Ho Chi Minh sales office strives to enhance its overall competence through seam-less communication between team

members and departments and these efforts continue to support its superior sales performance. For instance, after long promotion activities, the office sealed a deal to supply PCM coatings to Hoa Sen Group, one of the largest PCM pro-duction company in Vietnam. In addition, the office plans to sup-port the company’s Nghe An plant in the future, in addition to the Binh Duong plant and Pumi plant, which it is currently supplying. “For stringent management of new clients, we receive support from sales support departments includ-ing the technical department, pro-duction department, and manage-ment department. That support is critical to shaping how we respond to our clients’ demands day and

night, while actively building trust with them. We plan to increase our market share based on the consis-tent quality of our products and our differentiated services.” The KCV Ho Chi Minh sales depart-ment is enlarging its sales force by conducting its business in a way tai-lored to the intricacies of Vietnam-ese culture. “Vietnam can be thought of as one of the chimneys of the world: a country developing through continuous change. Vietnam is a melting pot of different races, lan-guages, religions, and cultures. That means our main customer base is also constantly changing.” The KCV Ho Chi Minh sales office is building relationships with clients from a long-term thinking. The process of pondering and overcoming difficul-ties together with customers can serve as a stepping stone to achiev-ing good long-term results. “More than 80% of initial sales were made with local Vietnamese

customers, and Samsung Electron-ics and LG Electronics have recent-ly been heavily investing in the consumer electronics sector. Large household appliances brands such as Japan’s Aqua and Panasonic are also localizing PCM steel plates in Vietnam. In response, the KCV Ho Chi Minh sales department plans to establish itself as a leader in the home-use PCM market by quickly responding to market changes.”Market changes are enticing ever greater numbers of KCC’s Korean competitors to enter the Vietnam-ese market. Accordingly, the KCV Ho Chi Minh sales department plans to cultivate and defend the market with new strategies and greater efforts. In addition, the company is taking an in-depth approach to projects initiated by Taiwan and Japan, the second and third top-ranked countries in terms of overseas investment in Vietnam, and plans to maintain

partnerships with fast-growing Vietnamese steel companies and construction companies. One of KCV Ho Chi Minh sales office’s current issues is supplying coatings to the plant newly built by Sam-sung Display. Since the end of last year, KCC has been supplying fire-proof paints to the plant, and all of KCC’s Vietnam subsidiaries are making intense efforts to abide by delivery schedules. “There is a Vietnamese saying, ‘Good words are money and rice.’ The saying is akin to the Korean proverb, ‘A soft answer turns away wrath.’ Wher-ever you go in Vietnam, you can meet people who smile brightly and say ‘Xin chao’ meaning ‘Hello’ to you. The KCV Ho Chi Minh sales office wishes to spread ‘Xin chao’ to our clients. To that end, we will continue to pursue sales activities while challenging ourselves and overcoming difficulties with a posi-tive heart.”

KCC flooring materials, “SUP BLUE”, “SUP AUK”, “SUP CHUNGAH-RAM SAFE” and “SUP SORI HYANG SAFE”, had a facelift, replacing more than 70% of existing colors. “SUP AUK”, which takes up the larg-est portion of the currently available flooring materials with 15 colors, has been updated with newly developed colors and patterns to better reflect the latest design trends. In addition to the existing floor-type wood patterns, KCC released abstract-pattern textile, concrete, herring-bone and lineless wood, providing consumers with a wide variety of choices. Meanwhile, “SUP CHUNGAHRAM SAFE” and “SUP SORI HYANG SAFE” were developed and released as functional flooring materials with enhanced safety functions. Non-slip and fire-safety func-tions were added to “SUP CHUNGAHRAM SAFE” and “SUP SORI HYANG SAFE”, the safe flooring materials. It’s not just safe for walking, but also highly flame-resistant. “KCC SUP Sensetile Trendy”, an LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) flooring material, was remodeled, and a new sample book was released. “KCC SUP Sensetile Trendy”, comes in 10 patterns and 22 colors. KCC developed bianco marble pattern, which is similar to real marble, and a concrete pattern, which is especially popular in cafes and in commercial space. It has also added various designs, such as refined fabric patterns, carpet patterns and abstract patterns with mod-ern sensibilities.

KCC released new products “Sensemel Gold”, paint without heavy metals and “SUPRO Durasense (gloss)”, a highly fouling resistant environment-friendly waterborne paint. “Sensemel Gold” is a heavy metal-free product. All its colors do not contain any heavy metal. It is regarded as a product that can solve the problem of such hazardous materials as the heavy metals found in solvent borne paints. KCC last year entered into an MOU with the Ministry of Environment for the non-use of hazardous materials such as heavy metals in building paints, and “Sensemel Gold” is the first such product under this MOU. “SUPRO Durasense (gloss)” is a highly fouling resistant environment-friendly waterborne paint. This paint is widely used on the outer walls of general buildings. Its functionality has been improved so that pollutants or foreign objects that stick to the walls can now be easily washed away by rainwater. It is thus differentiated from ordinary building paints to maintain its original color and gloss for a long time.
