2018-2019 Elementary ELA Bookworms Pacing Guide KindergartenCarrcroft, Claymont, Hanby, Harlan, Lancashire, and Maple Lane Elementary
This pacing guide is a general guideline for implementing the Bookworms Curricula in the 2018-2019 school year. Teachers may adjust texts slightly within the marking period due to unforeseen interruptions (i.e. snow days). A daily schedule of activities is included on the next page of this
document, followed by a booklist and a pacing calendar for the 2018-2019 school year.

BSD Handwriting Statement
Direct instruction in handwriting is mandated for all kindergarten students in the Brandywine School District for the 2018-2019 school year. The reason to focus on handwriting is to support efficient transcription skills for students. Research supports that
efficient transcription skills support students’ overall writing performance. Efficient handwriting and keyboarding skills allow students to focus on the more complex aspects of writing such as: word choice, sentence construction, and text structure.
Quick and efficient transcription skills also allow students to sustain their attention to a writing task and to more easily engage in the writing process (Berninger, Garcia & Abbott, 2009).
*BSD Bookworms Kindergarten Handwriting
What is the resource? Bookworms: Teaching Letter Formation and Handwriting
Which schools are included? Carrcroft, Claymont, Hanby, Harlan, Lancashire, & Maple Lane
Who is responsible for implementation? Homeroom Teacher
When should this be implemented? Instruction during Shared Reading (Poem and Word Study)Practice during Differentiated Instruction Block
*Please note: ● Handwriting instruction should not exceed more than 15 minutes.● The purpose of handwriting instruction is efficiency and legibility, not perfect penmanship. Concentrate on showing students to form letters
using the correct strokes. ● It is essential that kindergarten teachers ensure that children can form letters consistently and fluently. Directions for showing children how
to form the letters are included in the Bookworms lessons. Teachers demonstrate with sky writing while naming the strokes necessary for the letter. Students sky write on day 2, write on whiteboards on day 3, and on paper on day 4. Handwriting practice pages are provided for seat work during differentiated instruction.
● Students should be encouraged to use correct letter formation across the day to practice what they have learned.
