Sustainability and Modern Business Practice

What does „Sustainability“ mean?

What is „Modern Business Practice“ which is orientated to the aims of sustainable development?

Page 16: © Vicerektor FH-Prof. Dr. Dieter Hesssel Projekt: FH Prof. Dr. Bernhard Zimmer. Symposium „Sustainability and Modern Business Practice“ Welcome to Your

Sustainability

Since the Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro in 1992 the model of

„Sustainable Development“ as a goal of future business practice

is accepted.

Maybe one of the most important milestones in global

environment policy.

But, what is sustainable development?

Symbolic Tree Planting: „Apple Tree“

Malus Domestica ’Roter Boskoop’

Martin Luther (1483-1546):

„Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces,I would still plant my apple tree. “

Page 22: © Vicerektor FH-Prof. Dr. Dieter Hesssel Projekt: FH Prof. Dr. Bernhard Zimmer. Symposium „Sustainability and Modern Business Practice“ Welcome to Your

© Vicerektor FH-Prof. Dr. Dieter HessselProjekt: FH Prof. Dr. Bernhard Zimmer.

Symbolic Tree Planting: „Apple Tree“

The name of the apple tree is “malus” (meaning disaster or

damage), which has its roots in Christian theology and symbolises

the temptation of the apple which led to the expulsion from

paradise.

Today we are faced with modern temptations and therefore the

apple tree should remind us to take our responsibilities seriously

and to consider our actions and their consequences carefully.

Symbolic Tree Planting: „Apple Tree“

The fact that the apple tree will be planted by many people

together in front of the university entrance is of strong symbolic

value.

The tree will thrive because it will be well-cared for, like our

university educational system.

Its fruit should be of benefit to many, like the results from

research and development at the Salzburg University of Applied

Sciences.

Executive Summary – Workshop A

Sustainability and Resource Efficiency

Eco-magination means rebranding

Environmental improvement as an economic and financial opportunity

Changes can be made through communication on various levels

We need social justice in order to end insecurity

We must enable the world to become much more efficient

Page 28: © Vicerektor FH-Prof. Dr. Dieter Hesssel Projekt: FH Prof. Dr. Bernhard Zimmer. Symposium „Sustainability and Modern Business Practice“ Welcome to Your

Executive Summary – Workshop A

Sustainability and Resource Efficiency

Sustainability meansusing resources efficiently – as a first step:

Redesigning all products and processes through green design

Managing all institutions to be restorative of human and natural capital

There is much work to be done but we are at the tipping point at which a transition to sustainability is now inevitable.

Executive Summary – Workshop B

Sustainability and Climate Change

Dr. Wegener: “Forest Management and Wood Utilization to support Sustainability and mitigate Climate Change”

Dr. Richter: “Increased use of wood in Swiss buildings: modelling of related CO2-effects.

We can’t apply global systems to climate protection and forest management systems. Measures have to be developed on a local basis.

Executive Summary – Workshop B

Sustainability and Climate Change

Primary energy resources are diminishing rapidly and will vanish within a few decades.

In which extent can renewable energies replace primary resources?

With wooden products, material substitution effects outweigh production emissions.

The mechanism of sink systems have to be calculated for longer periods whereas Kyoto has rather short term objectives.

Executive Summary – Workshop B

Sustainability and Climate Change

Transform thinking to stop the destruction of resourcesRaise awarenessReduce consumption

Lifestyle quality of life“Everybody of us is asked to define ‘quality of life’ for himself, to

be more conscious about the effect of his doing”.

It is important to develop a holistic ecological sight as there are interacting problems of environmental, social, technological… nature.

“The complexity of the problem of global warming and climate change is not one by nature but one created by human kind.”

Executive Summary – Workshop C

Sustainability Business Practice

Why discuss global development?

Sustainability – not another illusion?

Conditions for developmentintrinsic developmentpeople need to have the responsibility (not passive)

Problem of migrationHuman forces wasted in the western world but needed in their home countries

Executive Summary – Workshop D

Linking Science and Business

Two key questions:

- How to finance education?- How can this investment (education) be repaid?

Global competition – war for talents

Two alternative models of financing- work – study colleges

- EHRIX model
