As a new company Ocean Signal needed to make an impact in a market dominated by large, established companies. Having developed and tested the latest marine safety communications equipment, their brief to us was to establish their company within this sector and highlight their new product range.

1) Logo designThe organic combination of marine grey and warm yellow echoed the colours in their products and this set the basic styling for the rest of their branding.

2) Print and colour swatchesOnce the logo was signed off, stationery, product labels and signage were designed and prepared for print. As we were dealing with a wide range of materials and print processes, keeping the colours consistent required the production of colour swatches before the print could go ahead, ensuring the least amount of variation in colour.

3) Brand guideWith the fi rst phase of print in production the brand guide could be completed along with a logo library that the client could use for all eventualities.

4) WebsiteFrom three initial designs the chosen style was worked up in photoshop and a template created. Live fonts, web colours, rollovers and other functional features were fi nalised. After liaising with the web devoloper, the site went live 2 months ago.

5) The launchThe brand then moved onto preparation for their global launch at the Marine Expo in Germany. Brochures were designed and printed using fi ve colours to emphasise the strong yellow. The content of the brochure involved extensive photoshop work to imagery and the creation of diagrams to accompany the information. All that was left was the Exhibition display stand. The design had to incorporate the actual products so again the vinyl print had be proofed before the fi nal print pass.

The largest holiday add-ons company in the UK, Holiday Extras is primarily a web based booking business that has been at the forefront of the industry for 27 years.

1) BrandingLogos, brand guide for print and web, brand furniture, copywriting, literature and web styling as well as product branding. We are Holiday Extras’ brand guardians, working hand in hand with the marketing department. A large company needs to convey a clean and consistent image. An ongoing task when so many departments want their say.

2) WebsiteThe bulk of our work in recent years has been rebranding the website which has thousands of pages. Providing templates for headers, banners, booking forms, buttons and many other features. Much of our time is spent in liaison with the Holiday Extras web team to ensure a seamless transition of work.

3) Design for print and print buyingPOS fl yers, brochures, posters, signage, exhibitions and merchandise. The majority of print buying is handled by Oak. Print runs vary from 100 - 1/2 million.Oak. Print runs vary from 100 - 1/2 million.

Providing secure airport parking through out the UK at 26 airports, Airparks had gone through a rebrand, which initiated with a new website 12 months ago. Our task was to carry this through into all other areas of the company’s customer experience.

1) SignageWorking closely with the Airparks on-site team, the fi rst goal was to bring all the airport parking sites owned by Airparks into line with the new brand. Site visits were made to judge the customer experience, and a template of signage design was developed to cater for each individual site in the UK. This included an extensive library of icons.

2) PrintTo accompany the new signage, a variety of printed material was needed. From posters, fl yers and maps to annual passes and branded merchandise.

3) TouchscreensAs part of an innovative drive to simplify the check-in experience at the car parks, touchscreen kiosks have been introduced. A wireframe was created for the procedure and graphics created that echoed the web site. Then a long testing process ensued and changes were made to make the designs as user friendly as possible.

4) VideosInitially designed for the web and carried through to the Airparks busses’ on-board TV screens. Working hand-in-hand with ESA Films in London, we created the storyboard, all the branded graphics and liaised with the production team with regards to the animation, sequencing and soundtrack.

Stuart is a multi-disciplined web designer who for 10 years has consulted with companies about their online business strategy, keyword/competition research, search/social marketing, testing and analytics. Stuart also spends plenty of time at the coal face, hand coding websites to the very latest web standards and building bespoke Wordpress themes.

Experience: User experience and interface design for Holiday Extras. Email marketing, e-commerce and interactive kiosk design for Airparks. Intranet design and information architecture for Ensign Insurance. Software interface for Norwich Union Insurance. Prudential staff training CD ROM for Knowledge=Power. Freelance web design for countless small businesses. BSc(Hons) MediaLab Arts at University of Plymouth.

Artist: Stuart’s is also a musician, sound engineer and short fi lm maker (The Cybernetic Beast, won 2 independent short fi lm awards from BT getoutthere and Hotdog Magazine/RIZLA). He also restores classic Volkswagens.

Caroline has over 28 years’ of experience working as a creative studio manager which followed 8 years as a designer.Working on photographic shoots, in publishing, advertising and print before forming Oak Creative in 1992. Caroline has qualifi cations in Statistics, accountancy and law which she obtained after graduating from Canterbury Art College.

Photographer: Photography, Horse Riding and Carriage Driving are Caroline’s loves as well as growing fl owers and trees from seed and cuttings. Caroline recently had a successful win in a photographic competition.

Since leaving art college with a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design, Pip has worked for design agencies in London and Kent. Pip has gained a very broad range of experience during this time and has worked at as a senior designer at Oak for 15 years, working on all kinds of projects but particularly creative packaging work and corporate identities. She has a wealth of typographic and traditional design skills along with 20 years of computer design experience.

Interests: Pip’s interests include camping, live music, badminton and has an unhealthy obsession with anything typographic.

Having left Kingston University with a BA Hons in Illustration and Graphic Design, Rick started his professional life as a freelance Children’s book Illustrator. 13 years ago and with several books under his belt he began freelance work for Oak and now he is Creative Director. Spearheading branding, web design and all things creative.

Artists/Interests: As an exhibited artist Rick takes his love of art home with him putting paint brush to canvas and pencil to paper. He also has a new children’s book out at the end of 2010. In between art projects he enjoys running, mountain walking, cooking, trips to the cinema and travelling.

Jasper has over 12 years’ experience in the Graphic Design Industry working for both large and small agencies such as Limehouse Group, MSDC, Design at Large, Project Arthur and U&US. He is experienced in all areas of design from print to web, and at every process, from art direction and photoshoots to project management and all aspects of print. He has a BA (Hons) Graphic Design from Bath Spa University College.

Clients/Brands: Coca-Cola, Orange, Nike, DTI, Affordable Art Fair, Edinburgh House, Dockside Outlet Centre, Hammerson, Feng Sushi, The Liberty, Attention Seekers, Armitage Venesta, British Parking Association, Bushboard.

Interests: Jasper’s passion in life (besides design) is surfi ng and mountain biking and has travelled the world doing both.

Dane has 6 years’ of experience in web design; creating skins for message boards and other template-based systems as well as bespoke designs utilising modern and traditional (X)HTML, CSS and Javascript techniques. He also has 5 years’ of web development experience with database-driven websites, using PHP and MySQL. Some of his development skills include Object-Oriented Programming and using PHP frameworks, such as Symfony and CakePHP.

Clients/Brands: Oak Creative, Prater Raines, Vince Cable MP, Urban Angels.

Interests: Researching and experimenting with new web technologies and trends, building custom content management systems, sketching, painting, meditation and self development.

Ewen has over 12 years’ experience working as a designer. Working in publishing, digital media, freelancing and now permanently for Oak Creative as a Senior Web Designer and illustrator. Over the years Ewen’s work has covered many aspects of design from print, web design and illustration. He has a BTEC HND Graphic Design and National Diploma Graphic Design.

Clients/Brands: Legoland Holidays, London Dungeons, Merlin Group (Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Chessington WOA), BAA, easyJet, Saga Group, AA, Eden project, Global Round the World yacht race, Holiday Extras, Walker Construction.

Artist: Ewen is a practicing artist. Ewen is presently working towards a solo exhibition at the George’s Gallery, Creative Quarter, Folkestone for May 2011. Ewen is represented by the following galleries: Fairfax Galley, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Battle Contemporary Fine Art, Peche Art, Sandgate. Member of AOI (Association of illustrators), Canterbury Society of Art, Full member of Folkestone Art Society.

Barry has over 7 years’ experience working in web design and development on both huge and small websites as part of a large team and as an individual. With skills in both the design and technical sides of the web, as well as extensive experience in e-marketing campaigns and SEO, Barry has a great all-round digital knowledge. Barry has a BA Hons in Visual Communications in Graphic Design.
