The growth of Korea’s ICT industry is supported by the triangular interaction of corporations, the government and the market.

- Corporations’ bold investment, the government fostering policy, and consumers’ innovativeness of new technologies

Corporations

Bold investment in next-generation major ICT items- Forward-looking investment in semiconductors, displays and mobile phones

Pursuit of economies of scale/scope, supported by specialized manufacturing capabilities

- Securing global top competitiveness through specialized hardware manufacturing

Government

Market

Positive policy support for fostering the ICT industry- Implementing the electronic industry fostering policy (‘68), launching the Ministry

of Information and Communications (’94)•

Increasing R&D investment in front-running IT research institutes and universities- The government increases R&D investment each year: 3.6% of the total

government budget (‘09))

High ICT market penetration and diverse utilization of ICT- Internet, mobile communication, and mobile commerce penetration rates: global

top ranking •

Serving as an early adaptor and a global test bed - Korea’s ICT penetration speed is far faster than that of other countries.

National IT convergence capability:

KOREA

Strength: Capability of strong IT technology

Weakness: Convergence promotion with emphasis on commercialization

Strength: Best convergence-based IT infrastructure

Weakness: Insufficient accumulation of convergence source technology

Strength: Highly potential demand of IT convergence products

Weakness: Short of convergence product success stories

Strength: Government’s active promotion policy

Weakness: Insufficient personnel nurturing related to convergence

Korea’s ICT convergence capabilities are analyzed – Korea has deployed world best IT infrastructure with such merits as powerful technology development competence and strong large IT enterprises, in addition to efficient government support and strong market demandKorea is relatively weak in development of source technologies and insufficient collaboration among industries.

Schedule of Commercialization

The contract to install the ACONIS system of the HHI in the 18 container ships of DSME, as ordered by AP Moller. (The SAN-based remote maintenance service played a critical role in the order.)

AP Moller requested the remote maintenance service for the BMS system, which would be installed in 18 of DSME’s ships.

AP Moller also requested the remote maintenance service for the 24 ships of HHI they had already ordered.

The ISIG system and the remote maintenance service were installed in the ships of the DSME.

The DSME ship was delivered to AP Moller.

IT-Shipbuilding Convergence Technologies, including SAN and YAN, are the foundation of the Next-Generation IT Ship.Convergence technology that will establish Korea as the world’s No.1 shipbuilder and contribute to sales of USD 11 billion

ITIT++

ShipShip

Korea hopes to capture a 40% market share of the global shipbuilding and marine industries, while firmly maintaining its position as the world’s No. 1 shipbuilding nation. This can be achieved by improving the competitiveness of the shipbuilding and marine industries based on the digital ship/shipbuilding technology – primarily via the new technology development aimed at grafting information technology onto the shipbuilding and marine industries.

Revenue impact worth USD 45 billion is expected, including the establishment of an intelligent integrated navigation system, via localization of equipment and fostering of the related domestic related industry.

Additional revenue over 30% of a ship’s price is expected by increasing the repurchase rate of ship’s owners via ship maintenance improvement.

Improvement of production competitiveness is expected, with an annual sales increase of over USD 11 million, by improving productivity by reducing the duration of the shipbuilding process and enhancing production efficiency by cost savings.
