LOGOS Easter 2014 Edi on
The Community Paper of the Anglican Parish of Kenmore‐Brookfield
Our Mission: To be a caring Chris an family, growing in faith, using our spiritual gi s in shared ministry and reaching out to each other and the community, as we encounter and respond to God.
Dear Friends
This will be the last Logos that I write for. It’s hard to believe that 11 years have come and gone, and I’m not sure how many Logos le ers have poured out of me during that me – over 30 I guess. I approach my impending re rement on the 8th June, the Fes val of Pentecost, with mixed emo ons, an cipa on, sadness, and some apprehension. The strong feeling which ini ated my decision in the first place a er much prayer and reflec on, is that I really feel it is
me – I am feeling very red, and I believe the Parish needs someone new with energy to take it to the next level.
There is a lot of energy in the Parish at the moment in many different ways and I am really trying to help people take ownership of all the ministries they are involved in, so that no momentum is lost during the Interregnum. This is a wonderful Parish, and has a marvellous history of remarkable things having happened over the years. I feel very sure it will go to new levels of fine ministry in the years ahead. There is such a strong lay leadership, and people involved in lay ministry right across all that happens, and there is so much that happens in all areas in the Parish, and yet I am sure there is more wai ng to be achieved as well.
We are hoping to find an Assistant Priest who will be a con nuing presence in the Parish, and who will work alongside the Locum Priest who will come during the Interregnum. Please pray for these appointments, and for the appointment of the right person as the new Rector in due course. Our Youth and Children’s minister Bri any is also leaving on Palm Sunday, having found full‐ me employment, and she will con nue her studies, and make prepara ons for her forthcoming wedding. We thank her for all she has brought to us, and wish her and Glynn every blessing for the future.
I shall very much miss the daily connec ons with people, and the wonderful opportuni es for pastoral ministry. It is such a unique privilege and a very humbling experience to be invited to share significant moments of people’s lives, in mes of birth, marriage, anniversaries, illnesses, and mes of loss and dying. It is an extraordinary thing that God calls us to do in this ministry. I shall also miss the buzz of the busyness I think, but only for a li le while, as that is what is fast wearing me out. It is me for a quieter life, and some me with my family and grandchildren. I will not be far away, as Paul and I have a li le house at Springfield Lakes, and we are looking forward to moving out there. It is a fast growing area, and has a lovely feel to it. A er a me of “R & R” and “doing nothing” I will look at possibili es for locums and filling in for people on leave etc.

When I came to Kenmore Brookfield I didn’t think I would be a property developer, but when I look back, I see that that has been a significant part of my me here – there have been roadways, kitchens, toilets, gu ers and fascia's, hall extensions, water tanks, signs ‐ to repair and bring into being. It’s surprising the things that God has in mind, that you never think you could do.
I also however believe I have been a people developer too, and my desire has been to be able to help people grow in the love and knowledge of a God of love and grace, who reveals himself in the Christ who heals, forgives, and helps grow and restore, as we come to place ourselves and our faith and trust in him.
It has been such a privilege to help people explore their voca ons, and encourage and support and train them through to Ordina on and beyond, and to see them go to their own Parishes.
It has been wonderful to be able to make wider connec ons with the community of Kenmore and Brookfield and the wider Church in many ways, serving as Area Dean of Brisbane West Deanery, on the MEC Commission, on the Archbishop’s Building and Furnishings commi ee, on the Inter‐church Council and rejoicing in the lovely connec ons with the leaders and members of the other churches in the area – serving on the High School Chaplaincy Commi ee, the steering commi ee for the Men's Shed, the Chamber of Commerce, the Brookfield Centre, and taking part in Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies.
It took much prayer and soul searching to reach the point of not feeling guilty about leaving this wonderful call to ministry that God has given me here at Kenmore‐Brookfield, but then I came to see that my ministry and service for God does not end, it will just go in different direc ons, and will open up, as I move forward in faith. Even though as the me draws closer, and I am feeling somewhat apprehensive as to what life in re rement will be like, God has us in his hands I am quite sure.
We are approaching the Easter season, the me to enter into a dying and to celebrate new life, and as this me for myself and the parish of Kenmore‐Brookfield comes to an end, we both look forward with hope to the promise of Resurrec on and new beginnings
I couldn’t have done any of the past 11 years without the constant guidance, wisdom and strengthening of God, and the support of my wonderful husband Paul, and my beau ful family and without all the remarkable people of Kenmore‐Brookfield who have been part of the journey.
Thank you to everyone of you and most of all, thank you to our God of wonder, grace and blessing.
We wish for you all, a most wonderful Easter filled with hope and promise.
With love, Rev Bev
A reflection from “Many Voices, One Voice” –
Eddie Askew. [As shared and found meaningful at mainly music, by Revd. Bev]
Time, Lord, time. I’ve hardly a moment to think
about it! So much to do, So much to accomplish.
Lord slow me down. Take my foot off the accelerator and guide it, gently to the brake. Cool my overheated mind, slow
my heartbeat. Tell me again, and again, that the
world, your world, will quite possibly survive without my
frantic support. Remind me that it’s not my great endeavour that keeps the earth’s
foundations firm. But yours.
Yet I never sense you in a hurry. Never feel you don’t have the
time. When did Jesus rush around,
shouting “Why aren’t there forty-eight hours in a day?” Like I do. And he had a lot on his shoulders.
Including a cross.
After all, time is yours. And eternity.
The world’s yours, and its people. What’s that? “Nice of me to
admit it” Lord, when I’m busy, dragged down, deep-mired in self-made burdens, put your hand on my
shoulder. Slow me down. Help me to see that people matter
more than projects. That listening and loving mean more than the endless whirling circles of activity that dizzy me. Make me understand that if I go
on rushing around I’m no different from the rest of my
world. Give me time for people, because when I can open the door to them,
You’ll be able to step in too.
And that’s where the difference starts. And the joy.

‘The Hope of the World’ Helen Steiner Rice
An EMPTY TOMB… A stone rolled away
Speak of the Saviour who rose Easter Day… But that was centuries and centuries ago,
And we ask today WAS IT REALLY SO? Did He walk on earth and live and die
And return to HIS FATHER TO DWELL ON HIGH? We are not there to hear or see,
But our hopes and dreams of ETERNITY Are centred around THE EASTER STORY When Christ ascended and rose in glory… And life on earth has not been the same, Regardless of what the sceptics claim,
For, after the Lord was crucified, Even the ones who had scoffed and denied
Knew that something had taken place That nothing could ever remove or erase…
For HOPE was born in the soul of man, And FAITH to believe in God’s MASTER PLAN
Stirred in the hearts to dispel doubt and fear And that Faith had grown with each passing year… For the HOPE of MAN is THE EASTER STORY,
For life is robbed of all meaning and glory Unless man knows that he has a ‘goal’
And a ‘resting place’ for his searching soul.

MESSY CHURCH HAS BEEN “REBOOTED” IN 2014 and if the first fun-filled,
action packed Messy Church in March is any indication this year is going to be a big one! The 4pm-6pm timeslot on the first Friday of each month seems to have “hit the spot” for the 70
plus people who attended.
The focus for the year is The Lord’s Prayer and gaining an understanding about this universal prayer that Jesus gave to the world.
The various activities that were offered all linked to this focus and included computer graphic design and Lego building.
There was a great atmosphere during the worship time and the food was yummy!.
Put simply Messy Church is a different way of “doing church”.
It IS church but just not churchy. At Kenmore- Brookfield, Messy Church is for ALL AGES to come together
for FUN, FAITH AND FOOD. Messy Church is held on the first Friday of each month
at Kenmore Anglican 1036 Moggill Road, Kenmore.

So why not come and see what it is all about and perhaps bring your grandchildren, children and neighbours!
Grab some info magnets from the basket at Kenmore church and spread the word! Messy Church is the place to be!
Maybe you would like to be part of the Messy Church Team? The enthusiastic team of 25 would warmly welcome you!

“Where have all the young people gone?” This is a ques on that keeps coming up in discussions around the parish, from our Visioning Day last August, to mee ngs of the Parish Council. Of course we do have many excellent programmes for children, youth and families, with many dedicated parishioners running them. The success of mainly music, and the great ini al response to our reboot of Messy Church are examples of where we are making an impact in the lives of young people and their families in Kenmore and Brookfield. However we realise that there are gaps in what we are currently doing, and obstacles to progress – for instance there is nothing currently provided for the 12‐16 age groups, and we have very few young leaders. Sundays are becoming very busy with compe ng pressures from sport or work. The me has come when we need to take stock and see what direc on we should take next.
To this end we have been working with Graham Stanton, who is the Youth Ministry Advisor at the Mathew Hale Public Library. He has run two discussion sessions with a number of Parish Councillors and those involved in our youth, children and families’ ministry and has produced a consulta on report. His advice can be summarised as:
We need to take a long term view – six years plus, building on our exis ng ministries to children and families in order to transi on children into youth ministries as they get older.
In par cular we need to put in place programmes/processes that help non‐church parents grow in faith and to connect with church, and programmes/processes for senior primary/junior secondary children.
We need to carry out an audit of our exis ng programmes, recognising that we have limited resources and that decisions as to where to invest these resources in the future will be easier if we have clear informa on about the effec veness of each ministry and the connec ons between them.
We need a clear vision for youth ministry in our parish to help us engage young people with the Gospel. Graham Stanton, based on his discussions with us proposed the following as our Vision for Youth Ministry 2020:
Under God, we see a ministry to young people founded on Christ, with challenging content, loving community and youthful energy. We are commi ed to pursuing this vision with the hope that thousands might become disciples of Jesus; by God’s grace and for God’s glory.
The Parish Council has decided that the future of youth ministry in our parish is so important for the future of the church as a whole that we cannot afford to delay the process un l a new Rector is appointed. We are therefore pressing ahead and a small group is mee ng to pray for and to lead the work. This is something the whole parish ought to get behind. Will you share this vision?
Timothy Nicholson
The Space Busy….this word is becoming increasingly synonymous with the 21st Century. How does one break the cycle of busyness? One way is to set up an area or space which exudes quiet, peace and a beau ful vista over God’s crea on.
Several people have been involved in establishing such a space at Kenmore Anglican. On both sides of
the church at the front a Space has been created for individuals or small groups to pray, talk, listen, learn or just to be.
In one of these spaces Messy Church is evolving in a visual form. Over the year gentle and per nent informa on will be added to highlight informa on about the focus study, The Lord’s Prayer. Already a “name tag” tree has been placed in the space and it is hoped that the tree will form the basis of where Messy Church name tags reside. Watch as the tree grows in colour and foliage as the number of name tags mul ply!
The words of the Lord’s Prayer will also be built up over the months around the tree and an acknowledgement of the global embrace of this prayer in many countries will see The Lord’s Prayer printed in numerous languages.

As we come into Holy Week, it is nearly 3 months since I arrived in St George, with my car full of “essen al” books, po ed herbs and clothes, and my son’s car and trailer with more clothes, more books, and a miscellany of kitchen and personal items. In that
me, I have already been away 3 mes ‐ 2 weeks overseas a ending a conference, a few days in Brisbane, and two Saturdays in Toowoomba. And each day in Toowoomba means two days driving and two overnight stays. I am already ge ng into the rhythm of the west – almost as much me spent away as at home, and every trip into Toowoomba or Brisbane expanded to see people, visit den sts, or purchase things which can’t be found in St George. Everyone here seems to have family in Dalby or Toowoomba or both, and trips to Toowoomba are frequent; Brisbane figures li le in their lives. My Toowoomba visits were for Bp Rob Nolan’s farewell Eucharist, and two Pastoral Training days.
St George has been hot, very hot in January, and dry un l the end of February when there was good rain which brought the grass up and turned everything green but did not fill the dams. The rain in March was very welcome but, once again, not enough. However they got a lot more north of Roma and Mitchell, and the Balonne River is now flowing, hopefully enough to fill the Beardmore dam and ensure irriga on for the crops next season. And already it is filling the river at St George which has been pi fully dry, just sandbanks interspersed with mud and some hopeful‐looking herons.
The congrega ons here consist of 10 to 16 people a ending church at St George, plus 4 to 6 at each of the out‐lying
churches of Bollon, Dirranbandi, Hebel, and Thallon. These have been ge ng a Eucharist every third month, but Fr. Ken Spreadborough, who flies in for 4 days every month, has reorganised his schedule to give them all a Eucharist every second month, and a er Easter I will lead Morning Prayer on the alternate months, so that each centre has a service on the same day once a month. St George has a service every Sunday, with Morning Prayer taken by one of the 3 LAs here. There
is also a service every week at the re rement home Warrawee, taken by the churches in turn, with Fr Ken giving a Eucharist once a month as well – the congrega on here is o en bigger than in the church on a Sunday!
We s ll have no children or youth ac vi es at St George Anglican, though there are children coming to some of the other Parish centres. I teach some RI classes in the High School, and assist the chaplain to serve breakfast at the Primary School, and I will probably help at a new drop‐in centre for children and youth just star ng in the town, run by the Uni ng Church. There hasn’t been any progress with star ng Mainly Music, but I hope to get some people together for this – it would need to be an inter‐church effort but hopefully we can get a group going. Right now, Derek Schiller of the Uni ng Church is the only full‐ me minister in the town, and I hope they might take it on as part of the drop‐in centre.
The web page for the parish is now on the community web site for St George, and can be found at www.stgeorgeqld.com/document1.aspx?id=5734 We are hoping to improve this very clumsy address when the main web site moves onto a new system this week. The web page is deliberately simple because it is aimed at the ‘nomads’ whose caravans and campervans are already to be seen on the roads and caravan parks here – and who will be accessing it via smart phones and tablets and poor internet connec ons. I have also put together an informa on sheet and leaflet with the services in all churches during Easter week, to put up in the local informa on centre and tourist places as well as caravan and camping parks, and will replace this with the standard services a er Easter.
As well as these ac vi es, I con nue on the Diocesan Community Service Commission and a ended my first mee ng by teleconference in February, with the next one coming soon. This was ok from my perspec ve, but I will try and make some mee ngs in person if the ming works – I expect to be visi ng Brisbane for a few
days every couple of months or so. I am also finding me for wri ng up some weed ar cles, doing a li le
gardening, and walking my dog Blake along the river bank in the late a ernoons. There are 3 green tree frogs in the church grounds which is a pleasant surprise as I like green frogs – no toads, I’m glad to say! So all is well here in St George, but please keep us in your prayers, especially for con nued rain, and for the

NICHOLSON’S LENT GROUP ‘T L ’ P ’ – very familiar to us all, but if you stop and think about the words we say it is profoundly challenging and touches on all aspects of our faith. Indeed the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is quoted as saying “If somebody said, give me a summary of Chris an faith on the back of an envelope, the best thing to do would be to write Our Lord's Prayer.”
Our group has been looking at five aspects of this prayer using material from the UK’s York Courses. This includes a course book full of insigh ul comments and CD recordings of dis nguished church leaders discussing the topic. We have looked at prayer, the how’s, why’s and therefore’ s; at what it means to ask ‘your kingdom come’; at daily bread, which provoked discussion on both consumerism and our understanding of Holy Communion; on forgiveness, where we were struck by the course booklet’s dis nc on between prac cal forgiveness (which is always possible) and emo onal forgiveness which may take years); and finally at our mortality, about heaven. Discussion was very broad which suggests that Rowan Williams’ statement I quoted above is not far from the mark.
We also shared, at the start of each session, a short Lenten reflec on on the hope and light that Jesus came to bring to the world, but how people in his me (and indeed in our me) would not accept that light. Timothy Nicholson
MONDAY NIGHT (WEBBER/KELLAR ) GROUP: ‘THE LORDS PRAYER’ - YORK COURSE.
On Monday 31st March we considered the “Forgive us…” theme. What was most prominent in our discussions was the emphasis in the study book on “large scale” forgiveness (as in situa ons involving murders and terror a acks) when in our lives locally there is as much to focus on in the “small” hurts of daily interac on with people.
At one end of the scale are those wonderful people who, having suffered so much at the hands of captors during WW2, have been able to forgive them wholeheartedly. At the other end are those who retain bi erness within families over offenses that through a clearer mind we might judge to be extremely minor in the scheme of life.
We all felt it was important to keep our rela onships with others in perspec ve and seek to understand their feelings (and ours) in ma ers where forgiveness can heal. A er all we can never really compare our “forgivings” with that we have received from God. Gary Kellar
WEEKLY MONDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY The Cat Bible Study group has been using the book ”G S ” by Bishop Bill Ray. It is very clearly set out with preparatory reading for each week, opening and closing prayer, and a selec on of ques ons to guide our discussion. The readings are from the Old Testament and the Psalms: they outline the stories that Christ must have learnt and followed. We have had some deep and interes ng mes and par cularly enjoyed the psalms.
We con nue to rotate the leadership and this has contributed a variety of approach to each session.

BEV’S TUESDAY
MORNING GROUP
LENTEN STUDY On Tuesday mornings we are studying a lovely Lenten study book called “You have set us Free.” It is a Catholic Archdiocese publica on, and is filled with beau ful prayers and insigh ul reflec ons on the Lenten gospels, from Pope Francis and his Joy of the Gospel wri ngs. I and group members are finding it very meaningful to engage with. It focuses on encounters with Jesus. There is much in it that is very helpful in our desire to learn the Gospel stories and the Gospel message, and be able to share it. In the reflec ons we hear that the first step is a personal dialogue with others, sharing joys, hopes and concerns for loved ones, and then sharing the fundamental message of a God who became man, and who gave himself up for us, who is living and who offers us his salva on and his friendship. We have been entrusted with a treasure, and there is nothing more precious we can give to others. Bev Bell
NEWSON’S LENTEN BELLBOWRIE BIBLE STUDY ‘T L ’ P ’ ‐ York Course. Forgiveness—true forgiveness is something we all struggle with at mes. Do you forgive and forget? It is not always that easy and we have to work through this a er deep hurt in me and in prayer. If people do not truly forgive they can become embi ered. Pastoral care and counselling is most helpful.
Helen Newson
BEV’S THURSDAY NIGHT GROUP We are having a great me on Thursday evenings engaging
with a ‘Chris an Introduc on course’, which encourages us to read through the Gospel of Luke, ask ques ons, and also takes us through the basic principles of the Chris an gospel message, the salva on to be found in Jesus Christ our Lord, the Son of God, who died for us, and rose again, and calls us to turn our lives around, offers us forgiveness, and calls us to belong to him in loving rela onship, and leads us into new life in God.
We are also looking at the construct of the Bible, the Creeds, the Anglican Church and the Sacraments, as group members are moving towards Bap sm and Confirma on. Great ques ons come forth each week, and we are all learning lots of things.
I am hoping to keep repea ng this 6 week study in an on‐going way, so that there is a place for anyone new coming into faith and wan ng to learn. It fits well with the aims of the Vision Group 4. Bev Bell

PARENTAL GUIDE ON CARING FOR KIDS WITH ASD OR SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
PROBLEMS
The books wri en by Heather Jones, a parishioner at the Holy Spirit Kenmore, could fill a bookcase. She has been wri ng for 25 years and has over 200 books to her name, but her latest is dearest to her heart.
Heather has spent the last 25 years wri ng books for learners of English as a second language, but now she has wri en her experience of paren ng a child with ASD.
It has been a long journey to support her son, Jamie, to live a more independent life and she describes this phase of her life as “semi‐re rement”, soon to be filled with new personal pursuits.
When Jamie was four years old, he was diagnosed with severe speech and language impairments coupled with mild au sm. He is now nineteen and the last two decades have tested her paren ng, educa on and communica on skills, but she ploughed these gi s into helping Jamie learn the art of conversa on.
She says as a former communica ons lecturer and playwright, she struggled with her son’s communica on challenges. “Up un l the age of ten, Jamie was completely opposi onal or silent,” she says. “He was so frustrated not having the language, he used to smash things up and I was constantly called in by the school to calm him down. I decided I needed to reach him.”
It began in the car one day when Jamie was ten. He was silent, as usual, and Heather told him, “Jamie, I was sick today.” He looked at her blankly. He didn’t know what to say. It wasn’t a ques on; it wasn’t an instruc on. “Jamie, it’s me for you to say something. It’s your turn.” He looked uncomfortable but finally said: “Did you eat something?” “No, my tummy was fine – I had a headache. But that was so good of you to say something! I’m really pleased with you.”
That was the turning point. From then on Heather persuaded and demanded responses from Jamie – she encouraged, supported and explained how you hold a natural conversa on.
Now body language, small talk, asking ques ons and ac ve listening are all covered in her new book “Talk to me: conversa on strategies for parents of children with ASD or speech and language impairments”. This guide is par cularly wri en for carers of children with au s c difficul es. It starts with prac cal ps on star ng a dialogue with your child then it moves on to behavioural ma ers, socialising, educa on and life skills.
Today, Jamie is 19 and has an ac ve life featuring a job at a nursery, his beloved car, gym workouts and Facebook connec ons.
As for Heather, she is looking forward to turning her wri ng skills to yet another field. She has just commenced her first semester of a Graduate Diploma of Theology at St Francis Theological College, meaning academic essays will be her new wri ng challenge.
