SEOUL ART SPACE

Since 2009 Culture-driven Urban Regeneration The Seoul Art Space is a cultural art’s project under the Seoul Metropolitan City’s ordinance for the renovation and redesign of its urban infrastructure. Old and unoccupied areas in Seoul have been provided to creative artists in Seoul in order to allow civilians to share high quality of culture and art. Seoul’s Creative City Area approach is designed to provide its civilians with art enjoyment and leisure within the city in order to stimulate communication between artists and diverse art communities. This space therefore encourages locals to participate in cultural activities.

Seoul Art Space_Seogyo opened in June 2009 , as the representative culture and art venue of Hongdae district,remodelled from Seogyo-dong Office. While serving as a cultural mediator for the district, Seoul Art Space_ Seogyo aims to perform the key role of a network hub that produces new cultural contents and links up areal cultural ecosystems. Also, by providing various support channels for young artists with potentials, Seoul Art Space_Seogyo wants to function as a systematic and stable platform to nurture young artists.

Seoul Art Space_Mullae, which opened on Jan. 28, 2010, is a creativity support center for various domestic and international artists and includes Mullae Arts Village, a self-generated art village. Newly constructed as professional creative space on the old site of a strip of steel materials shops, Seoul Art Space_Mullae includes a common atelier and a multi-purpose presentation room, and other various supporting facilities for creative work and presentation such as a recording studio and a seminar room.

As a creative space dedicated to visual art, remodelled in October 2009 from an old printery located in Doksan-dong. Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon provides the local community with an opportunity to enjoy culture through its various programs. Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon is implementing programs including exhibitions, workshops shared with students and residents, opening of studios have been properly housed in the residency and space.

Seoul Art Space_Sindang is a creative atelier dedicated to craft, remodelled into 40 units from 52 unoccupied business shops inside an underground shopping center in Sindang-dong, built in 1971. Joongang Market Underground Business Shops, where Seoul Art Space_Sindang is located, was built in 1971 and formerly thrived in comforter, hanbok, eatery materials and equipment, and raw fish, but recently, upstaged by department stores and mega stores, has a few shops continuing its petering history. The outdated underground business facilities, now with new owners, are gradually shaping creative spaces that inspire with respective features.

As Seoul's first collection of studios for people of letters, Seoul Art Space_Yeonhui was created on Nov. 5, 2009 in four buildings on the old site of The City History Compilation Committee of Seoul. The buildings, respectively named 'Keulim', 'Holim', 'Ulim', and 'Deulim', include 20 writer's studios, and community spaces such as an outdoor stage and the literature and media lab. 17 out of the 20 studios are provided for domestic creative writers while the remaining 3 studios are niched as international residency for global literary exchange.

Seoul theater Center, which was remodelled from former Hyehwa community center in November 10, 2007, makes efforts to revitalize the Daehakro theater district by introducing the culture to theater-goers and supporting PR and marketing for artists' creative activities. Webzine theater-in Which is a play guide for the audience, offers a new perspective from which the audience can select a play. Daehakro theater Tour Provides an opportunity to get close to theaters through various encounters in Daehakro. Actors’ PLAY-UP academy Which is a custom-made education program for active professional actors/actresses. It has quenched actors' thirsts for learning through processes like vocality/movement/physical activities for onstage acting.

Taking the idle space from which the Western Branch of City Transportation Headquarters has moved out, Seoul Dance Center is constructed as a space for cultural and artistic creation mixing art, nature, and human. Seoul Dance Center focuses its support on the creative activities by choreographers and contemporary dancers and provides studios with opportunities to personally engage in art experience, while operating various programs designed to communicate with regional cultural communities.

Seoul Art Space_Jamsil was created by seoul Metropolitan Government in 2007 as a creative space dedicated to people with disabilities, remodelled from Small and Medium Business Products Sales and Exhibition Hall located inside the Sports Complex in Songpa-gu. Operated by Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture (SFAC), Seoul Art Space_Jamsil continues to lead revitalized support for creative activity by disabled artists as "Creative Space of Seoul". Seoul Art Space_Jamsil provides its support for creative activities mainly involving disabled artists working in visual art, helping not only with space to work in but also education and exhibition for artists who move in. Seoul Art Space_Jamsil works to encourage disabled artists to break out of their disabilities and perform as viable professionals in art market. Also, it exerts itself to run special projects that discover talents for disabled children and develop specialized infrastructure in art involving those with disabilities.

Seoul Art Space_Seongbuk started as a multiple culture and art space linking artists and the local community by taking the old site of Public Health Center of Seongbuk-gu. As a cultural and artistic health center that heals individuals and community through art by tapping into the characteristics of the space on the old site of the health center, Seoul Art Space_Seongbuk supports the healing art projects planned and operated by artists and professional art therapists who are selected through its own projects and regular open competitions. Besides, healing art projects with links with external organizations, ateliers, kitchen gardens, and culture and art activities by local communities are actively under way.

Taking the unoccupied space out of which Euncheon-dong Resident Center moved, Seoul Art Space_Gwanak opened on Dec. 17, 2010, to create art infrastructure and satisfy cultural needs in Gwanak-gu suffering from shortage of cultural resources. As an art experience space that provides support and implementation, Seoul Art Space_ Gwanak serves as the mediator between children and artists, where children are encouraged to experience various arts through communication with artists and artists are reborn as art teachers.
