the newborn dried off, stimulated, warmed and breathing in less than 60 seconds after birth. If the baby did not breathe, the person assisting at the delivery would need to respond promptly using an Ambu-bag to help the baby breathe. This international program has reduced the number of newborns who die at birth in low resource countries by almost 50%. At first, the maternity nurses were a little shy—that is, until Tim played the part of the pregnant mother! When the nurses were a little slow in preparing for the birth, Tim said he wanted to start pushing the baby out. The nurses responded sternly that Tim should not push until things were ready. Everyone erupted into laughter as Tim followed the nurs-es’ instructions on how to breathe properly while waiting to push. Two by two, they practiced several birth

scenarios until they were able to suc-cessfully “resuscitate” the baby within 60 seconds. Every day we are stretched to apply the creativity of the Holy Spirit to new situations in teaching the next generation of health providers in whole-person, Christ-centered care.

¨ That God will give us wisdom on how to generously care for the poor and marginal-ized while also clearly pointing people to Jesus, who is the source of all comfort.

¨ That we will function effectively as a team with our Congolese partners, through the difficulties of cross-cultural collaboration.

¨ That we will be able to foster systems that encourage transparency and effective management of the hospital’s limited resources.

¨ That our four daughters would clearly hear and respond to God’s direction for their lives as they transition into adulthood.
