The young starving German Shorthaired Pointer had just been picked up and was about to be placed in a kennel as Denise was leaving. He spent a very expensive week in isolation at the vet’s office being treated and medicated, but emerged healthy and well, ready for his forever home. “Zorro” The German Shorthaired PointerOur on site trainer Denise S’Bath, who is a big part of PPF’s 3rd Chance Program, was evaluating a couple of dogs for rescue at a shelter in Riverside County. The young starving German Shorthaired Pointer had just been picked up and was about to be placed in a kennel as Denise was leaving. Despite being a bag of bones, the dog still had the energy left in him to jump up on her for hugs and kisses, which proved to be his salvation.

They said he was found wandering in the mountains, clearly starving for some time, as he was at least 20 pounds underweight. His chances at this shelter were not good. Facilities such as this one are dreadfully overcrowded, and they just do not have the resources to give extra care to dogs like ZORRO.

Denise just couldn’t turn her back on this dog’s plea for help, and soon she was loading him up with the other dogs she had rescued, immediately naming him ZORRO.

Once back at The San Clemente–Dana Point Animal Shelter ZORRO was placed in a heated kennel, given a cozy bed and fed his first square meal in a long time.

Unfortunately he broke with kennel cough after a few days, a result of his compromised immune system and that soon developed into a serious case of pneumonia. He spent a very expensive week in isolation at the vet’s office being treated and medicated, but emerged healthy and well, ready for his forever home.

The GOOD NEWS, ZORRO is living in the lap of luxury with a family that sadly lost their beloved German Shorthaired Pointer last year and they had been looking on the internet at rescue facilities, hoping to find one!

The dogs wagged, the people rolled, and some did both at Pet Project Foundation’s 17th annual Wag-A-Thonsm. The morning began with The Boys of Summer’s cool tunes to get us started on the day’s events (www.theboysofsummer.net). Folks were greeted by Platinum Sponsors Hartz, In Home Pet Final Care, and PetSmart at the Richard Henry Dana statue in Dana Point’s beautiful harbor.

The Urban Mushers of Southern California (www.urbanmushing.com) were present to tell us about their beautiful dogs and demonstrate how they work for fun.

Marley was there to lead the walk around the island and through the Bowser Bazaar. Did you see all that dog stuff??? Wow! PPF gets great vendors to come to this event.

We were treated to a demonstration by Orange County Fire Authority’s Urban Search and Rescue Dog Team. See some of the pictures of this demo on our Website. Amazing animals!

Gunner proved he was the fastest dog in the Doggie Dashes with a 3.4 SECOND gallop through our racetrack. This is proving to be a real highlight for dogs, participants, and volunteers.

Pet contests! Yes! They were amazing, cute, clever! We couldn’t put this event on without the encouragement of the Dana Point Harbor Department and Orange County Parks. Wags and licks to those folks. And our volunteers, what can we say but thank you for helping on such a huge event to raise money for our communities’ animals! Many of us enjoyed an apres-Wag party at Aventura after closing up the Wag and cleaning the island. Much deserved!

Did you miss it? Well, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 30, 2011, for the 18th annual Wag-A-Thonsm!

The 15th Annual L’Hirondelle Chardonnay Luncheon was held on Saturday June 5th. This event raised over $3800 which are much needed funds to be used to care for the homeless animals at the San Clemente–Dana Point Animal Shelter.

In attendance on this beautiful June afternoon were 50 guests and 15 doggies. The doggies received treats from Grandma Lucy’s and cupcakes with a bone on top lovingly made by Karen Kulick.

Attendees were treated to a wonderful luncheon accompanied by wine and a scrumptious dessert served by Evy Rose, Caroline Statzula, Risa Brown and Becky Lentini. Musical entertainment was provided by Carolyn Miller.

Ali and Lisa Golesorkhi, owners of L’Hiirondelle, introduced “Salty” their cat, who meowed an “I’m glad I was adopted from the San Clemente–Dana Point Shelter”.

A fun time was had by all.

Pet Project Foundation wishes to thank Coordinator Pamela Schuler, Chairman Kathleen Morea, Auctioneers Bob and Paula Becker, Opportunity Chair Nancy Gonzalez and all of the wonderful people and local businesses that supported this event.

Footnote:

Pamela,

I forgot to tell you – We planted a Magnolia tree in front of our house in memory of Maggie Mae – we called her our “Highland Magnolia” and were told by our gardener it would not bloom this year. On Saturday, it burst with 2 huge blooms and has 20 or so more coming. It is only 8 feet tall. We are putting a small stone below it for Maggie, I think it’s bloomed in honor of the Patio Party. She loved coming to it.

S.C. Rider Supply (SCRS) and Down South Ridaz (DSR) teamed up to host

a benefit motorcycle wash to show their support of Pet Project Foundation.

Roxanne Lucido, owner of S.C. Rider Supply, was approached by Down

South Ridaz bike club to co-sponsor the wash held on June 13, 2010 in

San Clemente.

The bike club president, “Terrible” Tony Singleton and vice president,

“Frosty” Leon Dubois wanted to host a community event that benefited

a local non-profit. When the subject came up at their monthly meeting,

another club member, Darren Conn, suggested Pet Project Foundation

and the San Clemente–Dana Point Animal Shelter knowing through his

girlfriend, Florianne Reynoso what a great friend to animals PPF is.

SCRS provided the location, marketing and materials needed to get the

event going and DSR provided the labor, that labor being 11 Marines

from Camp Pendleton that spent the day happily washing motorcycles for

the homeless animals. It was a fun day with music, food and a lot of bikes.

We even had a few dogs looking for their forever homes at the event.

Everyone worked hard before and during the event to make it a huge

success by raising $1100. The thoughtfulness and generosity of people like

S.C. Rider and Down South Ridaz help PPF continue to support the animals

at the shelter and for that We Are Forever Thankful.

Newly appointed Shelter General Manager.

Pet Project Foundation is delighted to welcome Kim into this position. She previously served as a super-visor and is very familiar with all aspects and workings of the Shelter.

PPF looks forward to working with Kim in her new capacity, particularly in our shared goal of building new kitty-friendly quarters at the Shelter in the upcoming year.

INTRODUCING KIM KURTZ

After having her face painted at the Pet Project Foundation booth during The Festival of Whales Street Faire in Dana Point back in March, Marie discovered that the artist had donated her skills to help the animals, so she decided she would also like to do something for Pet Project.

Marie’s mom Emily contacted PPF volunteer Sandra Ackerman who provided them with some necessary tools, flyers, newsletters and a few posters. On April 15th in front of Las Palmas Elementary school in San Clemente, Marie and some friends held their lemonade and face painting stand, raising approx $60 for the animals at the shelter.

Marie’s mom Emily is very proud of her daughter for encouraging others to give back and effecting some change. Marie simply said, “Mommy, I’m super glad I did that!”

We are often asked by parents of minor children how their kids can help our shelter animals. Marie set the perfect example of how to do so and we sincerely appreciate her efforts.

Paws Up to Marie Ann Rose Marsh – Age 6

We are making progress in our Cat Care Improvement Project to build new kitty-friendly quarters at the shelter. We are deep into the city’s entitlement process with the assis-tance of architect Todd Skenderian.

All eight of the kitty suites have been sold! Our continuing fund-raising efforts include a limited quantity of Commemorative Wall Tiles. With the purchase of a tile, donors can honor or memorialize a family member, friend, or favorite pet, give a gift in honor of a special occasion, or celebrate their special connection with the shelter or Pet Project Foundation. Commemora-tive Wall Tiles are available in either 8” x 8” ($1000 donation) or a 4” x 4” ($500 donation) sizes. Both sets of tiles will be prominently displayed on an interior wall in the new cat room addition. For more information and to order, visit the “donations” page at www.ppfcatroom.org, or call Pet Project Foundation at 949-595-8899.

Dear Family and Friends.

It is with great sadness that we had to say ‘adios’ to our dear little Lucky Boy, the best little street dog in the world. We are broken-hearted. He has been such a part of our lives for the past fourteen years, bringing us so much joy, laughter and unconditional love. In his final days he taught us more about com-passion and caring for one in need than we could ever have learned in a lifetime. Whenever he looked up at us with those beautiful brown eyes, we loved him even more.

Lucky touched the lives of all he met during his life-time journey, from his days in Mexico City, where he was born. During our four years in Mexico he warmed the hearts of many at our fiestas, always a happy and willing participant in his chili pepper scarf. He journeyed with us back home to America, where he became a California beach bum, adding many new friends to his list. Then it was onto The Nether-lands and London for four years, where he gained many friends from around the world before returning home to California. Lucky met so many wonderful people during his life, always bringing a smile to their lips, a warm feeling inside them with his special way. Thank you for loving him.

On May 24th, 2010, Lucky died at home sleeping peacefully in our arms in the little bed he loved so much. He was surrounded by a circle of love as the sunrays from the skylight shone down upon him. Just before he passed, he let out his little “that feels so good” moan as he so often did. We knew that it was a message from him to us, saying that everything was okay as he bid us “adios”.

He will be greatly missed. But we have so many wonderful memories of the days we spent together on this earth. The great gift of unconditional love that he gave to us will be in our hearts forever. He will also live on in the pages of his book, “Lucky Dog – The True Story of a Little Mexico City Street Dog who Goes International,” and through sales he will continue to help other homeless animals find good loving homes.

Christie Shary.

Christie and Lucky Dog attended the 2010 Wag-A-Thon, Lucky’s last public appearance.

On June 3rd. Rhea Herbert of Dana Point turned 7. Instead of receiving gifts she asked her friends to donate to Pet Project Foundation.

Rhea attends St. Margaret’s Episcopal School and will be entering 2nd grade in the fall.

Thank you Rhea for so generously thinking of the animals on your special day.

Dear Pet Project, On March 13th my husband and I came to your animal shelter in hopes to find a rabbit. Well, I got what I wanted. We adopted Gable (renamed Hatter) that same day. He is such a great bunny boy. He is silly and fun to watch as he runs around the house and doing his binkies (happy jumps). He still tends to be a little on the grumpy side (can you blame him? He was there for almost two years) but each day he gets better and better!

Thank you for bringing Hatter into our lives. I hope we make him as happy as he makes us. Also, thank you to Cindy who was the volunteer that made it all happen!

Sincerely, -Angela and Mark Richardson

Letter from Jane’s new parents:Jane aka Sophia, is so amazing, such a gentle cat and very smart. She loves to play fetch and somersaults down the hall chasing after her catnip-filled toy mice. What a happy girl Jane is these days living with Smokey, now Grey C, who was also adopted from the shelter also. Please tell everyone thank you for all they have done for the girls. We love them both very much and enjoy sharing their progress with you.

-Ron and Michele

Jane’s shelter story:Jane came into the shelter with a run of black kittens and cats. She got older and more skittish and then she got ringworm! Poor thing was in isolation for several months; that means behind a locked door, seeing no other cats or people, other than the busy kennel attendants from time to time. She would meow so sadly from her prison, and when she finally came out she was more skittish than ever. Until one day Ron came in and Jane started “talking” to him. He was immediately drawn to her intelligence and potential. She really picked him. When they interacted, she ignored him – intriguing him even more! Cats do like to play hard to get.

I wanted to thank you all for helping me adopt by two new best babies Rio (aka Bear) and London (aka Sadie). They are the sweetest and most amazing dogs. They are both very well behaved and just starved for love and attention. They are by my side every minute with loving eyes, tail wags and kisses. They have moved right in to my home and especially my heart. I can’t thank you all enough for filling a huge void in my life. I adore my doggies! Kristen

and why we need your support. All of these animals had medical or long term care issues, please help us to continue our rescue of animals like these.

I adopted Peewee March 5, 2010. He was really sick at the beginning with pneumonia, and I fostered him for a few weeks before the adoption. Peewee is the best little guy ever. He loves people and gets along with everyone. He has brought so much joy to my life. He is so happy.

As you can see he has gained 4 good lbs. Thanks to everyone at the shelter. You were all so kind. And, Peewee thanks you, too.

Daisee was slated for euthanasia at a County Shelter after being hit by a car and sustaining serious injuries to her rear leg. Despite having an owner, they did not claim her.

As the weeks ticked by Daisee’s chances of survival were bleak. Fortunately she had a guardian angel at that Shelter and they were able to plead her case long enough to finally find PPF, who was willing to save this sweet girl’s life and provide the funds for the surgery she needed.

Thanks to Brianne Simon, a vet technician with Dana Niguel Vet Clinic in Dana Point, for fostering Daisee after her surgery. Brianne has since adopted Daisee, who happily lives with Emmy the Schnauzer in the picture.

Just a note to let you know how well Marley is doing almost 1 year later. We were warned that Monroe would be a handful so we renamed her Marley when we brought her home. Marley still has quite the attitude and a definite mind of her own, but with lots of love and training she is doing well and thriving. She loves riding in the car and playing with all of her toys and as you can see in the attached picture Marley is very, very happy in her forever home.

Thank you so much for taking such good care of her and giving her such a good start in life! Sincerely,

Kim & Dan

Turko originally came from Fresno. He had been abandoned and left tied to a dumpster with a wire around his neck, when he was about 8 mths old. Thanks to Denise Sbath our trainer at the San Clemente–Dana Point Shelter for rescuing him and and bringing him back to Southern California for adoption, where I was fortunate enough to be able to adopt him from.

I have been a Sunday Dog Walking Volunteer at the Shelter for many years. I look at Turko now with sheer love and profound gratitude, he has truly found his way into my heart, we are both so lucky

Brown Dog – Side of road – Possibly hit by car.

When the County Animal Control Offi cer arrived on the scene, she found a dog with a head injury, covered in blood. The A.C.O. rushed her to the emergency clinic for some much needed medical care. What veterinarians found was shocking and not expected. This poor pup had not been hit by a car, but rather riddled with pellets from a shotgun blast.

Who would do such a thing? Why? Those questions will never be answered.

The vets did what they could to tend to her wounds and make her comfort-able. Their thought was not to remove the pellets at that time.

Once back at the Orange County shelter, “Brown Dog” did not adapt too well. She was uncomfortable in a kennel and having trouble breathing and eating due to her injuries. Luckily for “Brown Dog,” Pet Project Foundation has a Third Chance Program which enables us to rescue dogs from other shelters that might otherwise be euthanized. Chris Pernick, PPF Board member and owner of Paws Pet Resort, was looking for such dogs on a late night search on her computer. When she came across Brown Dog, she knew she had to get this girl and get her fast.

With full support of the Board of Directors, Chris rushed the next morning to pick up this dog and get her to a veterinarian for a full evaluation. The vet suggested at this time the dog be made as comfortable as possible and rest so that she could heal properly.

Chris took “Brown Dog” to her work where her fi rst task was to give her a proper name, and Java it was. Slowly the healing process began for our sweet Java. Her recovery will take quite some time as her injuries are primarily to her facial area and esophagus, which hampers her eating and sometimes causes breathing problems. However the vets feel strongly that she will recover with love, care and attention, exactly what she has, thanks to her Third Chance.

Donations can be made to help cover Java’s medical needs. Simply visit petprojectfoundation.org and click DONATE. If, by generosity, we receive more donations than needed, those will go to help future Third Chance dogs. There is always one more waiting for our help.
