ZION-EAR ZION UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST JUNE 2016 7025 E 100 N, SHELBYVILLE, IN VOL. 428 REV. JAMIE L. KENT, PASTOR EMAIL: [email protected] Nobody is “Too Far Gone” There is a medieval saying you may have heard: “God draws straight lines with crooked sticks.” Have you noticed how candid the Bible is about its heroes? It doesn’t whitewash the flaws and foibles of its characters. Abraham is not only the Father of All Who Believe but the scared rabbit that puts his wife in jeopardy to save his neck. King David is not only the Man after God’s Heart but also the adulterer who lies and kills a man to try to keep the affair from being exposed. Peter is not only First Among Equals in the band of apostles but also the frightened fisherman who denies knowing Jesus of Nazareth in his hour of need – not once, but three times. So how can these people be “saints” and “examples” to the rest of us? How are we supposed to find hope and encouragement from reading their stories? That question isn’t too hard to answer. For one thing, those stories in the Bible are about real people. And real people have weaknesses as well as strengths, bad days as well as good ones. For another, God knows everything and lies about nothing. So the Bible doesn’t tell half-truths or gloss over human frailty. Finally, the full story gets told so you and I will understand that God is willing and eager to accept and include us too. The purposes of God in this world are accomplished through people with clay in their feet. Always have been. Always will be. Is there another option? But I have met so many people who are under the impression they are hopeless or “too far gone.” One woman told me there was no place in God’s heart for somebody who had made as big a mess of her life as she had. A man just out of jail said he could never feel comfortable among “decent folk.” What?

ZION-EAR ZION UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST JUNE 2016 7025 E 100 N, SHELBYVILLE, IN VOL. 428 REV. JAMIE L. KENT, PASTOR EMAIL: [email protected]

Nobody is “Too Far Gone” There is a medieval saying you may have heard: “God draws straight lines with crooked sticks.” Have you noticed how candid the Bible is about its heroes? But I have met so many people who are under the impression they are hopeless

or “too far gone.” One woman told me there was no place in God’s heart for

somebody who had made as big a mess of her life as she had. A man just out of

jail said he could never feel comfortable among “decent folk.” What?

  • Joseph had a prison record. Abraham and Sarah laughed at God’s promise. Jacob hurt his family by playing favorites with his kids. Naomi and Ruth were widows. Job lost everything for which he had worked. Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal. Rahab had been a prostitute. Noah got drunk. Moses stuttered. Are you getting the picture now? Is it dawning on you that God doesn’t have to recruit perfect people (there aren’t any!) and will use anybody who is willing to trust Him? That means He can use you. You. And you. Even me. God does some of His best work through the most unlikely people. He draws some beautifully straight lines with some of the most crooked of sticks. Think about it, Jamie

    Wednesday Bible Study

The bible study lessons held on Wednesdays will be on summer

break June 22 and will start back on August 17 at 11:00am and 7:00pm.

We will begin a new series entitled

“Acts of God” and you will not want to miss this great study.

Perhaps the greatest human question of all is the questioning of suffering: If God is good, why does He allow

so much pain in the world? This is a question not often talked about in

church but Acts of God addresses it head on and doesn’t offer trite Answers. This study will offer insight and hope as Pastor Bob

Russell uses the biblical story of Joseph to explore how, in the face of

personal pain or the suffering of those we love, we can trust in the

    Lord at all times.

The children’s ministry will be visiting Connor Prairie on July 16 leaving from

Zion UCC at 9:30am. This will be a great outing for our youth

so please let Amy Kuhn know if you and/or your child will be attending or if you have any questions or concerns.

HOUSE MINISTRY A list of contractors and skilled carpenters is currently being put together by the House Ministry for reference when repairs or projects are need to be completed. Please let Mike Haehl, Pastor Jamie or Becky know if you would like to be included in this list.

    DONATING IS APPRECIATED!

Food pantry items are collected month-ly for area food pantries. A collection box is located at the rear of the sanctu-ary.

In addition, we are collecting new or gently used shoes for Changing Foot-prints! Please place your shoe donations in the storage box in the office hallway.

Also collecting Campbell’s Soup UPC labels, box tops for education and pop can tabs. Containers are in the room at the rear of the sanctuary.
