ZigBee is a low-cost low-powerwireless mesh network
standard targeted at wide development of long battery life devices in wireless control and monitoring applications. Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard Created by the ZigBee Alliance
What is ZigBee?
![Page 4: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Low cost Can be used globally Reliable and self healing Supports large number of nodes Easy to deploy Very long battery life Secure
Why ZigBee?

ZigBee Promoters
![Page 6: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The ZigBee protocol architecture is divided into 3 sections, as follows: IEEE 802.15.4, which consists of the MAC and physical layers.ZigBee layers, which consist of the network layer, the ZigBee
device object (ZDO), the application sublayer, and security management.
Manufacturer application: Manufacturers of ZigBee devices can use the ZigBee application profile or develop their own application profile.
ZigBee Protocol Architecture
![Page 7: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The physical layer performs modulation on outgoing signals and demodulation on incoming signals.
It transmits information and receives information from a source.
Physical Layer
![Page 8: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The functions of the MAC layer are to access the network by using carrier-sense multiple access with
collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), to transmit beacon frames for synchronization, and to provide reliable transmission.
Mac Layer
![Page 9: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The network layer is located between the MAC layer and application support sublayer. It provides the following functions:Starting a networkManaging end devices joining or leaving a networkRoute discoveryNeighbor discovery
Network Layer
![Page 10: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The application support sublayer (APS) provides the services necessary for application objects (endpoints) and the ZigBee device object (ZDO) to interface with the network layer for data and management services.
An application object defines input and output to the APS. For example, a switch that controls a light is the input from the
application object, and the output is the light bulb condition.
Application Support Sublayer (APS)
![Page 11: ZigBee and WiMax](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042618/577c80c01a28abe054aa0304/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
A ZigBee device object performs control and management of application objects.
The ZDO performs the overall device management tasks:Performs device and service discovery Initializes coordinator for establishing a networkSecurity managementNetwork managementBinding management
ZigBee device object (ZDO)

ZigBee Improves ComfortZigBee works for you. Testing your temperature, controlling your
lights, even opening your drapes; keeping your home the way you like it.
ZigBee Keeps You SecureZigBee watches your home when you can’t, alerting you to
intruders, smoke, carbon monoxide, even water leaks. Protecting the things -and people- you care about.

What is WiMax?
Think about how you access the Internet today…Broadband access Wi-Fi access Dial-up access

WiMax or Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access, is a wireless Internet service designed to cover wide
geographical areas serving large number of users at low cost.
WiMax is the synonym given to the IEEE 802.16 standard defining wide area wireless data networking .

It consists of two parts
A TransmitterA single WiMAX tower can provide coverage to a very large area
– as big as 3,000 sq. miles
A ReceiverThe receiver and antenna could be a small box or PCMCIA card or
they could built into a laptop as the way Wi-Fi access is today.
