HAZING? NOT HERE.HAZING? NOT HERE.

One of the biggest myths surrounding hazing is that it creates lasting unity andcloseness between new members. However, it only creates a community filledwith fear, anger and resentment. As Zeta Tau Alphas, my sisters and I pledge tocontinue creating strong sisterhood bonds without hazing.

My Eta Tau Chapter sisters uphold this promise by making the choice to care andsupport one another each and every day. We, like every ZTA chapter, went intoFormal Recruitment with a purpose to grow and strengthen our sisterhood—andgrow and strengthen it we did. We have welcomed 71 new members since BidDay—nearly doubling our chapter size—and have showered them with every ounceof love and respect we have, so why stop now?

Zeta Tau Alpha’s New Member Experience highlights the importance ofwelcoming our new members into an uplifting and encouraging sisterhood. Withinthat, there is no room for hazing. Our New Member Coordinator devotes herselfto easily transitioning our new members into their new home in ZTA. Sheeducates our Big Sisters before Formal Recruitment to ensure that our newmembers will be respected and to reiterate that hazing has no place here. Ourentire chapter is educated each semester on the harmful effects of hazing andwe, as sisters, acknowledge our stance against it. We are educated about hazing,but our actions are what truly matter. That’s when our promise to be upstandingwomen comes into play.

We choose to create a sisterhood filled with trust, love and comfort instead ofwith the fear, anger and resentment that follows hazing. We build trust with ournew members by being transparent in saying we will never humiliate or intimidatethem and by upholding that promise. Our chapter shows love by including newmembers in outings with sisters—whether it’s to the coffee shop or the library. Bybeing intentional in our actions, we prove that they are valued. We providecomfort by showing them ZTA is home and that they will never face hazing,because home is a place where you should never be uncomfortable.

As Zeta Tau Alpha sisters, our pledges are more than what they seem. We knowthat pledges are promises, not people.
