By Rotanak Khy 12A Once again Zaman International School arranged an amazing school trip to Australia, which included thirty lucky stdents. On this special occasion our principle Mr. Adem and some very generous locals in Melbourne organized an English course weekday morning of the trip from 9 am till 12:30am at Isik College. Students met and made special bonds with staff and Aussie students, especially the chef who took extra time every day to make sure our food was perfect. Besides school we also had other activities like vis-iting the Melbourne Aquarium, the Ereka Skydeck tower with 88 floors, the Planetarium, the IMAX 3D Movie Theatre (Happy Feet 2) and Philip Island (Picnic). We also went go-karting and bowling.

the best activity during the whole trip to Australia was ice-skating!

Zaman also arranged a tour to the most famous and respected school in Australia, The University of Melbourne. There we were given a presentation and tour around the Trinity College campus (within the University of Melbourne). Afterwards, we were brought to a very kind Turkish family who treated

us to a warm welcome and a delicious dinner.

Zaman International School - High School Magazine05Mar-Apr-May 2012

After ten short days in Melbourne, we took a plane to Sydney. Yet we didn’t leave without saying good-bye and giving gifts to the ones who took care of us so well in Melbourne. In Sydney, we didn’t do an English course. Instead we had two full days of activities such as visiting Australia’s famous Opera house, rid-ing a ferry boat around the Sydney waterway and sightseeing over stunning scenery from Blue Mountain. From Blue Mountain we took the world’s steepest railway down and then took a cable car back over some incredible mountain cliffs. Finally, we visited a zoo where we saw, fed and touched some traditional Australian creatures such as Koalas and Kangaroos. Just as quickly as it started, our trip to Ausie Land came to an end. Yet our memories are treasures that we shall always carry with us - Especially the friendships we made. Lastly, thank you Mr. Adem for being such a protective and generous guard-ian; going through all the tedious details of visas and plans to make this such a mind-blowing trip.

By Mehlika Sinem Kapukaya 8E At the outset, I would like to thank our administration for arrang-ing such a fun activity. I like the idea of bringing students to one spot in order to build up strong friendships. Likewise, I think this kind of event strengthens not only our relationships, it also inspires us to cre-ate mind blowing pictures. Really, I cannot express what I felt that day. I must say I will not forget those beautiful moments I had back then. In conclusion, for me it is not important to be first. The best part about this contest was that we were united.

By Borey Long 10A 10A students went to Siem Reap with homeroom teachers: Mr. Halil, Mr. Davut, Mr. Mehmet, Mr. Devlet and Mr. Hüseyin. We travelled by bus from school at 4:30pm one Friday. We sang and laughed on the way. Around 9:00pm we arrived at Kompong Thom and ate dinner. At 11:00pm we arrived at Siem Reap. The next day we visited Angkor Wat. We took many pictures and then went to Bakkeng mountain to see the sunset. Afterwards we had dinner and returned to the hotel. On the second day, we woke up late cause we were tired from the first day. After having lunch we went to the Culture Village where Khmer Dances were performed. Then at 7:00pm, we returned to have dinner and go back to the hotel. The last day we packed our luggage and arrived at Phnom Penh at 5:00pm.

By Davut Aslan 10B Homeroom Teacher Siem Reap is a place of many temples with an extraordinary history. On a Friday evening, 10A took a bus to Siem Reap province with our teachers and their assistant. We arrived at Siem Reap so late, everybody seemed tired so we all went to sleep in a hotel near the river side. The first day after we had breakfast, we visited Angkor Wat. Phnom Penh full of joy and memories. Angkor Wat is the most famous tourist site in Cambodia. It has become a symbol of this country, also appearing on its national flag. Have you ever felt like you’ve stepped back in time? I felt like that at Angkor Wat, and l was happy to go back in time with my students.

By Mr. Mehmet 10A Assistant teacher

The Siem Reap trip made me very happy because I went there with my students and it was my fırst time. First I saw many temples, Angkor Wat and Bayon. Some of my students told me a little about these temples’ history. Both the Angkor Wat and Bayon temples were very exciting and very different.

By Mr. Dovlet 10B assistant teacher The trip was wonderful! I liked it very much. Ancient temples, one of the eight Wonders of the World!!! Ankor Wat. Exciting! By Mr. Hüseyın 10A Assistant teacher I came to Cambodıa this year. It was also my first time to visit Siem Reap with my students. I think Siem Reap is very special with Angkor Wat.

This was a Turkish song titled “Annecegim” which means “My Lovely Mother”. “I love my mother as the trees love water and sunshine - she helps me grow, prosper, and reach great heights”.

It was very fun performing Khmer traditional dance. Although it wasn’t perfect, but we really did our best and it was very enjoyable. In all hu-man affairs there are efforts, and there are results, and the strength of the effort is the measure of the result as they had worked so hard on this program.

The Drama was quite interesting, but it was also very messy. It was about a girl, who was very smart but then she got in to the world of games and bad friend-ships, consequently, she failed her exam. Sometimes it takes years to build up trust, but only seconds to destroy it. The girl took almost her lifetime to get smart and good reputation in school, but because of her bad actions for awhile, her future was ruined.

Turkish Dance “Halk Oyunu” was fantastic. The music was fixed with the dancers’ moves and the clothes really fit them well; they looked so beautiful. (In fact, they are always beautiful).

Class Day of 10F

Lucky Draw was the most exciting part. The biggest gift was a giant Pink Panther. The luckiest person who got the biggest gift was our classmate’s brother.

This is a song titled “Only Hope”. It was beautifully sung; the audients enjoyed it a lot.

This was a violin performance on a song called “My heart will go on”. It was great at first but the last part wasn’t as great as the beginning. Although, it may seem easy to perform such song, but it took hard time to get it succeed. After all, it takes hardship to build success.

It was a song called “Overboard”. It was perfectly sung.

It was a song in Khmer titled “Let me say sorry” that this song was sung after the drama as an apologize from a child to her parents and everyone around her. It’s true that in human life there are mistakes, but if one is responsible for his mistakes, there is always forgiveness.

Greetings,

Dear Grades 10, 11 and 12 Students,

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Now that you have started your University Major and Career exploration, it is time to narrow down your options and make a decision.

This can be challenging. Sometimes decisions can be as easy as choosing a TV channel or picking an ice cream flavor. These decisions don’t really affect the way you live your life. Other decisions have a bigger impact on your life so you may be slower to decide. Examples of these types of decisions include choosing a spouse and determining what you want to do with your life with regard to work.

Let’s now look at decision-making styles and some career myths that can interfere with good decision mak-ing when it comes to selecting a major or choosing a career.

WHAT KIND OF A DECISION MAKER ARE YOU?

Decision-Making Styles Not all individuals approach decision making in the same manner. There are different styles of deci-sion making. There are “inner reliant” decision makers that take responsibility for their decisions and “outer reliant” decision makers who try and transfer the responsibility for making decision to others. The following list identifies a number of different decision-making styles.Impulsive Decider One who takes the first choice: “Decide now, think later. Don’t look before you leap.”Fatalistic Decider One who leaves the decision up to the environment or fate: “What ever will be will be.”Compliant Decider One who goes along with someone else’s plan rather than making his or her own decision: “If it’s OK with you, it’s OK with me. Anything you say.”Delaying Decider One who delays thought and action on a problem: “I’ll think about it later.”Agonizing Decider One who spends much time and thought in gathering data and analyzing alternatives only to get lost in the accumulated data: “I can’t make up my mind. I have so many choices, I don’t know what to do.”Intuitive Decider One who decides based on what is felt, but cannot explain why: “It just feels right.”Paralytic Decider One who accepts the responsibility for decisions, but is unable to do much about it: “I know I should, but I just can’t get on with it. Can’t face up to it.”Escapist Decider One who avoids a decision or makes up an answer to end the discussion. For example, if asked by a relative about what he or she is majoring in, this type would respond, “I’m thinking about Pre-Med.” This allows the escapist to give a socially acceptable answer without taking responsibility.

Make a Decision

16 Mar-Apr-May 2012Zaman International School - High School Magazine

Play-it-Safe Decider One who almost always picks the alternative with the perceived lowest level of risk: “ I like anthropology, but I’ll choose accouning because I know I can get a job doing that.”

Planner One whose strategy is based on a rational approach with some balance between thoughts and feelings: “I am the captain of my fate. I am the master of my soul.” (Dinklage, as referenced by Brigham Young University Counseling and Career Center)

If you are currently satisfied with your style, then congratulations! If you feel a need to make some changes, now is the time to begin. For example, the next time you are asked, “What would you like to do?” offer your opinion rather than avoiding a commitment. Ultimately, making decisions and taking a stand are ways of establishing your identity. Whenever you make statements about yourself (e.g. “I am majoring in nursing or I am joining the Peace Corps”), you define yourself. Whether choosing a major, career path, or deciding what to do about a job offer, the following 7-step career decision-making model will help you make your decision. Career Decision-Making Model Step 1: Identify the Decision to be MadeStep 2: Know Yourself (Self-Assessment)Step 3: Begin Identifying Options (Career Exploration)Step 4: Gather InformationStep 5: Evaluate OptionsStep 6: Select One of the OptionsStep 7: Make a Plan and Implement the Decision

Some Final Thoughts about Career Decision-MakingYou need to review your decisions so you can assess whether you are achieving your goals. Reevaluating your decisions allows you to make adjustments and see if your desired outcomes are being achieved. This does not mean that your initial decision was “bad.” You may have learned more or things may have changed so that a different decision is required. Change is becoming a “constant” in our day and age. Everyone must be willing to reexamine, readjust, and remain flexible. Reevaluation may lead to slight changes in your career choices or total revisions.Should you find that you can’t identify any college major or career options at this time, or if you are having problems with implementing your decision, we recommend you schedule an appointment to meet with your career consultant, as well as discuss your plans with your homeroom teacher, parents, or relatives. Finally, Good Luck! May all your dreams come true!!!

Social networking comes with it’s own pros and cons. Many peo-ple out there who passes most of their time on social networking web sites (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, MySpace..). In this

article, I would try show you some of the advantages and disadvantages of

social network web sites. SN is free and it’s one of the best medium for communi-

cation. With SN you can connect to any type of people from anywhere in the world because almost every people around the world use SN. SN is the best way for finding your old friends. When a friend goes away to any other place we often don’t get the chance to communicate with him or her. But now SN gives us the opportunity to communicate with any of our old friends. We can share our feelings what’s happening around in our daily life through Facebook or Twitter. We can also get feedback from our friends. It is the best medium to share your feelings and thoughts with others. You can use SN for your business. Using SN fan pages, you can increase your brand value and social media preence for your business. Those web sites help you to find new leads and client, if you use it properly. You can also use Face-book and Twitter as image or video hosting site. You can set privacy for indi-vidual album to make your video and image collection private or public. Moreover, you can always download complete collection of your photos.

Disadvantages of Social Network

It’s time to talk about some disadvantages of SN. There are many disadvantages of

Social Network ill

20 Mar-Apr-May 2012Zaman International School - High School Magazine

SN beside some advantages. One of the major concern and disadvantage of SN is privacy. the most important situation to consider has to do with the availability of information too personal, whether in video, pictures or text. Never give out too much personal information. Any users can learn ev-erything about you within 5 minutes. We should bear in mind the priva-cy of your personal data, because after they are placed online lose your control. Also people usually keep their friends list visible to users, and this helps SN stalkers to find information. The stalkers can learn easily more information about your parents, friends, reltives... they can learn your family tree.SN is Addicting! SN is too much addicting!!! Yes it is indeed addicting which often kills your valuable time. Using a SN web site for your need is not bad but when you waste most of your valuable time than it becomes bad. One of the biggest disadvantages of SN is it’s addiction which causes many problems. Beside students, people who works in offices wastes their time in browsing SN. That’s why many offices has decided to block Social Network web sites completely.Fake profile is one of the biggest disadvantages of SN. it has become easier to create fake profile. People often use fake profile to insults or harassing someone. It is more common against girls where people simply make a fake profile and start harassing them. There are plenty of groups and Fan pages out there which is being created to abuse or violate other religion, personalities, nation etc. This kind of racist discussing activities decrease some popularity. We can conclude that, those web sites are used in the right proportions can be a powerful tool for online business or networking. However, we cannot disre-gard various disadvantages of SN.

Chemistry is a big part of your everyday life. You find chemistry in daily life in the foods you eat, the air you breathe, your soap and literally every object you can see or touch. Here’s a look at some everyday chemistry. What Are the Elements in the Human Body? Most of the human body is made up of water, H2O, with cells consisting of 65-90% water by weight. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that most of a human body’s mass is oxygen. Carbon, the basic unit for organic molecules, comes in second. 99% of the mass of the human body is made up of just six elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus.1. Oxygen (65%) 2. Carbon (18%) 3. Hydrogen (10%) 4. Nitrogen (3%) 5. Calcium (1.5%) 6. Phosphorus (1.0%) 7. Potassium (0.35%) 8. Sulfur (0.25%) 9. Sodium (0.15%) 10. Magnesium (0.05%) 11. Copper, Zinc, Selenium, Molybdenum, Fluorine, Chlorine, Iodine, Manganese, Cobalt, Iron (0.70%) 12. Lithium, Strontium, Aluminum, Silicon, Lead, Vanadium, Arsenic, Bromine (trace amounts) Why Do Onions Make You Cry?

Unless you’ve avoided cooking, you’ve probably cut up an onion and experienced the burning and tearing you get from the vapors. When you cut an onion, you

break cells, releasing their contents. Amino acid sulfoxides form sulfenic acids. Enzymes that were kept separate now are free to mix with the sulfenic acids to produce propanethiol S-oxide, a volatile sul-fur compound that wafts upward toward your eyes. This gas reacts with the water in your tears to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid burns, stimulat-ing your eyes to release more tears to wash the irritant away. Cooking the onion inactivates the enzyme, so while the smell of cooked

onions may be strong, it doesn’t burn your eyes. Aside from wearing safety goggles or running a fan, you can keep from crying by refrigerating your onion

before cutting it (slows reactions and changes the chemistry inside the onion) or by cutting the onion under water. The sulfur-containing compounds also leave a

characteristic odor on your fingers. You may be able to remove or reduce some of the smell by wiping your fingers on a stainless steel odor eater.

Why Does Ice Float?

There are two parts to the answer for this question. First, let’s take a look at why anything floats. Then, let’s examine why ice floats on top of liquid water, instead of sinking to the bottom. A substance floats if i t is less dense, or has less mass peunit volume, than other components in a mixture. For example, if you toss a handful of rocks into a bucket of water, the rocks,

DAILY LIFE CHEMISTRY

24 Mar-Apr-May 2012Zaman International School - High School Magazine

which are dense compared to the water, will sink. The water, which is less dense than the rocks, will float. Basically, the rocks push the water out of the way, or displace it. For an object to be able to float, it has to displace a weight of fluid equal to its own weight. Water reaches its maximum density at 4°C (40°F). As it cools further and freezes into ice, it actually becomes less dense. On the other hand, most substances are most dense in their solid (frozen) state than in their liquid state. Water is different because of hydrogen bonding.

How Soaps Clean?

Each soap molecule has a long hydrocarbon chain, sometimes called its ‘tail’, with a carboxylate ‘head’. In water, the sodium or potassium ions float free, leaving a negatively-charged head.Soap is an excellent cleanser because of its ability to act as an emulsifying agent. An emulsifier is capable of dispersing one liquid into another immiscible liquid. This means that while oil (which attracts dirt) doesn’t naturally mix with water, soap can suspend oil/dirt in such a way that it can be removed.

How Does Sunscreen Work ?

Sunscreen combines organic and inorganic chemicals to filter the light from the sun so that less of it reaches the deeper layers of your skin. Like a screen door, some light penetrates,

but not as much as if the door wasn’t present. Sunblock, on the other hand, reflects or scatters the light away so that it doesn’t reach the skin at all. The reflective particles in sunblocks usually consist of zinc oxide or titanium oxide. In the past, you could tell who was using a sunblock just by looking, because the sun-block whited out the skin. Not all modern sunblocks are visible because the oxide particles are smaller, though you can still find the traditional white zinc oxide. Sun-screens usually include sunblocks as part of their active ingredients.

CricketCricket is played by two teams of eleven on a level, closely cut oval “pitch” preferably measuring about 160 m by about 170 m. Two wickets are placed 20.12 m apart near the middle of the field. A wicket consists of two wooden crosspieces (bails) resting on three wooden stumps 71.1 cm high.

At each wicket stands a batsman. If the opposing bowler, delivering the ball from near the opposing wicket, knocks down the bails of the batsman’s wicket, the batsman is retired. In delivering the hard, leather-covered ball, the bowler throws overarm but may not bend the arm, and the ball usually approaches the batsman on one bounce. After six bowls to one batsman, an umpire (there is one at each wicket) calls “over,” and another bowler begins bowling to the bats-man’s partner at the opposing wicket. The players in the field shift position according to the batsmen.

If the batsman hits the ball with his willow paddle-shaped bat far enough so that both batsmen may run to exchange places, a run is scored. When the ball is hit a long distance (in any direction, since there are no foul lines), up to four exchanges or runs may be made. (If the ball crosses the boundary of the field on the ground, four runs are scored

automatically; if it clears the boundary in the air, six are scored.) However, if the oppos-ing team recovers the ball and uses it to knock down the bails of a wicket before the batsman reaches it, the batsman is out. A batsman is also retired if an opposing fielder catches a batted ball on the fly (as in base-ball), or for any of several more technical reasons. An outstanding turn at bat may result in more than 100 runs, a “century.”

A game usually consists of two innings; in one innings all players on each team bat once in a fixed order (unless a team, having scored what it considers runs adequate to win, chooses to retire without completing its order); a game may take several days to complete. Substitutions are allowed only for serious injury.

Mrs. Els Vandekerckhove

It was on the 8th of March, International Women’s day that I packed my bag, ready to go out for a day with my colleagues. It promised to be a relaxing day with the female teachers. We gathered in the morning at the school gates to catch the minivan to the beau-tiful dormitory with the swimming pool. So, in my bag I had my swimming clothes, my camera and my good mood! Once we arrived I couldn’t stop looking at the Frangipani flowers, growing there, all of various, beautiful colors. Some of us jumped in the water immediately while most of our friends set up the tables and got the food ready for breakfast. I especially enjoyed the marvelous Turkish cakes and salads. Wonderful Cambodian fruits like pineapple, papaya and rambutan were refreshing in the hot sun.

After breakfast, it was time to relax or go for a swim (again!).We had a wonderful time playing in the water with our friends together. The pool was great fun. Some of ourfriends enjoyed dancing, including foreigners danc-ing Khmer dances and Khmer friends dancing Turkish dances. To be honest, there was a lot of talent in the singing and dancing – watch out American Idol ! The best was the end of our morning there. We all had a lucky draw. Before we went we all had to buy a small gift, but we didn’t know who the gift would be for. We put all the gifts together and then drew names until each person received a gift - Surprise! I want to thank my friend for the wonderful gift, which will remind me of Cambodia and the fun time I had at Zaman Dormitory with the ladies – What a perfect way to spend International Women’s Day!

As we all know, Thursday the 8th of March 2012 was International Women’s Day. Observed as a day of struggle for the rights of women and social progress , women all over the world hold this day of solidarity in the struggle for peace. To celebrate this day with the world , Zaman International School hosted a party at the Dormitory for all women staff.

That morning , we came to school at 8 AM and went to the dormitory by school buses. On the way, we had such a good time talking to each other the ride seemed especially fast. Once at the Dorm , we helped each other prepare food and fruits. Foreign teachers prepared cakes , a mixed salad and bread. Khmer teachers and staff prepared mango , banana , pineapple , rambutan , longan , and Dragon fruit. While cutting fruit , we talked to each other with smiling faces. Soon afterward we enjoyed our breakfast together and some of us ate a lot because all the food was so delicious. In addition , after we finished our breakfast , some of us swam while the other women relaxed in the house closest to the swimming pool. Weswam and played games in the swimming pool. Another group played guitar and danced to both Turkish and Khmer songs. At 11 AM , we stopped dancing because it was time to play one more game – the Exchanging Gifts Game! We waited excitedly to hear the names picked at the lucky draw and to open our gifts pre-pared by teachers , staff and assistant teachers. We all had big smiles.

At the end of the party, three singers --Ms. Kadriye, Ms. Zarina and Ms. Samphose, song many, different songs and their voices were quite beautiful. Even though this was only a half day party, we will always keep this special time in our hearts , and we would like to thanks to Ms. Kadriye who organized this party for us in order to strengthen positive relationships between staff. We would like to have this party again and again for years to come.

To congratulate Women Right’s Day on March 08, 2012 Zaman International School held a meeting program between Khmer and foreign teachers at the School Dormitory.

This program was really important because: It was an opportunity to meet each other in celebration and reinforce the Interna-tional Women Right’s Day.It created a positive atmosphere -- happy, friendly, a nature of unity, and good relationship between Khmer and foreign teachers. It helped us learn about different cultures and traditions between Khmer and foreign teachers such as touring the dormitory, preparing and eating foods together, playing games like swimming , singing , dancing in Khmer and Turkish cul-tures and the lucky draw to exchange gifts with each other.

We celebrated for four hours in a good and friendly mood that we will never forget. To finish , in the name of the Khmer teachers , I would like to say many thanks to the school Principal and Vice-Principal Mrs. Kadriye who organized this program which increased good relationships between Khmer and foreign teachers. We hope that it will be happen next year!.

10A got together for an interesting party called “Durian Paty“. To begin with, the main purpose of this event was to get closer as a class. We also wanted an excuse to spend time with Mr. Halil (our Homeroom Teacher) and his assistants.First, we played volleyball and soccer while Mr.Mehmet and Mr.Huseyin barbecued. We had to start eating around 5 o’clock because it took about an hour to prepare the meal. After devouring the barbecue, we ate Durian for dessert.

By combining exercise and diet, you can improve your health, ease weight maintenance and increase weight loss.

The Best Fat Burning ExercisesThe best fat burning exercises are slower, aerobic, longer duration types that involve most of the major muscle groups. Aerobic exercise also strengthens your heart and cardiovascular system, lowers blood presure and improves cholesterol levels. Aerobic exercises that involve lower impact to hips, knees, and feet include swimming, and walking. If you want to make it easy on yourself, start slow. Brisk power walking and jogging are nice easy cardio-vascular exercises that get rid of excess fat slowly.

It is difficult to set absolute bottom calorie levels, because everyone has different body composition and activity levels. Health authorities do set some baselines - these are 1200 calories per day for women, and 1800 calories per day for men.

Calories for Fat Loss Science tells us that 1kg of fat is equal to 7000 calories, so a daily calorie deficit of 1000 should result in 1kg per week fat loss. Here is the list of the some of food cals.

The second Student Orientation Program was held during the second week of Term Two, from February 6th to the 13th, 2012.Grade by grade, all classes were invited to the Conference Hall, for this impor-tant, one-hour event. The main topics of discussion included a review of the definition of discipline, what we as a student body have done well and what still needs improve-ment and an update on boththe Tardy Policy and the Social Media Policy. The program started with a brief announcement by Mr. Gurkan concerning the use of student ID cards. Our new Vice-Principle Mr. Isa then followed with a thoughtful presentation on school discipline proce-dures.Here are some of the most important topics dis-cussed:

1. The Tardy Update:a) The total limit of absences in a year is 20 days according to The Ministry of Education of Cambodia.

Being absent over 20 days automatically fails the students or is cause to repeat the class.b) 4 Tardies are now counted as 0.5 absence. (8 Tardies=1 Full Day Absence)c) These tardies will be added to the total of the student’s absences at the end of the year.d) This new policy will be effective from the beginning of the Second Term (January 30, 2012). This means we will start this new policy of counting tardies from the beginning of the Second Term and add them to the student’s regular absences from the First Term.

2. The Social Network/ Media (Facebook, Twitter etc.) Policy Update:We would like our students to use technology and its products responsibly without harming any individual’s or institution’s reputation. Therefore, a) Any student found using Facebook during the school day, either via phone or laptop, will auto matically be suspended.

Student Orientation Program - 2By Mr. Isa

34 Mar-Apr-May 2012Zaman International School - High School Magazine

Student Orientation Program - 2 b) Any Facebook messages posted by students about the school, staff or other students that include insults based on any issue including ethnicity, religionor gender will be suspended.c) Any photos posted by students, taken inside or outside campus in school uniforms where the School Logo or any sign that represents the school is displayed, may bring damage to the school’s reputation. Therefore doing so is strictly forbidden. This case will also result in Suspension.d) Any physical quarrel or fight between ZIS students on school premises, resulting from a Facebook post (or cyber-bullying) will result in Suspension.

e) The length of a suspension will be determined by the School Administration. In the event of repeated ofenses, the School Administration may consider Expulsion. Though these new rules may appear strict, their intention is to ensure our educational experience remains harmonious and efficient for the whole com-munity. Please understand, an education like we have at Zaman (ZIS) is a precious gift, not to be taken for granted. We must guard it with the appropriate care and respect it deserves for the benefit of us all. Thank you for your understanding.

By 11A On Thursday March 8,Mr. Cihan’s class went to Malaysia. It was the greatest trip we ever had! Our plane departed at 8:15 AM from Phnom Penh and after two hours, we arrived at Kuala Lumpur. But the adventure really began in a minibus driving for a long time to our hotel where we were to spend three fun-filled nights. The hotel’s name was Citin and around the hotel was a place to buy stuff like shirts, pants and other things.During the trip to Malaysia we visited many famous places. First of all, we visited the Twin Towers. There was a huge shopping mall. At the end of our tour of the Twin Towers, we went to the cinema to watch a movie called “John Carter”. Then we went to Mount Genting. Along the way, we visited an exciting place called Strawberry Park. After Strawberry Park, we took a cable car to reach the top of the mountain. It was a chance to see natural landscapes. On the top of the mountain there was a big amuse-ment park. The third famous place we visited was called Sunway Lagoon. We had been discussing it since first arranging our schedule in Phnom Penh. The fun lasted the whole day!On the last day of our trip we went to visit KL Tower. We had an opportunity to watch the city from its top. The height was around 280 meters. Field glasses enabled us to clearly see objects that were extremely far away. At the very end of our trip we were happy and also exhausted because we had visited so many places. And one of our friends Rithiya, complained about his feet. We finally arrived in Phnom Penh on Sun-day. We hope to have another overseas trip together.

We are almost coming to the end of our first year of Drama in the High School, and it’s been exciting!

It’s not all about dancing around the theatre and pretending to be Angry Birds! Doing drama is implemented into International School curriculums for various reasons including, confidence, speech, team building, leadership qualities and problem solving. Grades 7, 8 and 9, have been following the IGCSE syllabus for drama. The students learn all aspects of theatre from characterization to tension, from set design to lighting, and from mime to comedy - and thankfully not an Angry Bird in sight!

When it comes to doing exams the students have both practical (act-ing) and written.

For the Second Term Visa Exams, Grade 7 worked on a Spanish play, Grade 8 worked on devised pieces (original drama created by them) and Grade 9 had the epic task of tackling Shakespeare, and it’svery, very hard! Shakespeare is not written in the English Language we use today but in Middle English that was spoken hundreds of years ago. We looked at a scene from a ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’. It is a

comedy written around 1590. ---It’s a play within a play… Set in Athens (Greece). Some local village people had to put on a play for a wedding for the Duke and Duchess, sadly the villagers were not very good actors, one of them was a big show off called Bottom, who thought he was the greatest actor ever… nearby there was a very naughty fairy watching them acting and he decided to play a trick on Bottom and turned his head into a donkey! It was lots of fun!

The students had 3 weeks to work on their pieces, which meant doing research, casting the play, acting and directing – then they had to perform their exam pieces for the rest of their class and myself. To be honest, I was really pleased with some of the work I saw. It’s really cool to see Zaman students doing great work and having such fun.

It was the first time that Grade 7 did an acting exam and some of the work that I saw was really impressive, I saw professionalism, commit-ment and total class support for each other, on the day of the exams we were all nervous and the atmosphere was electric!

Soon we will be putting on the first of our school plays – which I’m sure will be lots of fun!! I hope you will all come along and support!

Physics Photo ContestPhysics Photo ContestBy Muyhoung Lim 12E

To begin with, I would like to say thank you to ZIS, especially Mr.Gurkan who have introduced us too many International competitions, such as I-SWEEEP, INESPO, GENIUS OLYMPIAD, and recently an International Physics Photo Contest by AAPT. Through this, students may have a chance to show their different talents and reflect it to the world for a real achievement.Let me go a bit deeper into what does AAPT mean. AAPT is theabbreviation for American Association of Physics Teachers. AAPT organizes a photo contest that provided teachers and students an opportunity to learn about the physics behind natural and contrived situations by creating visual and written illustrations of various physical concepts. This contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12 (or equivalent international grade level). Photos may be entered in two categories, Natural Photos and Contrived Photos. All the photos will be judged by the quality of the photo and the accuracy of the physics in the explanation that accompanies the photograph. As a process of entering this contest, Mr. Gurkan, Mr. Davut, Mr. Enis and Mr. Mustafa, our physics teachers, had organized a photo contest in our school in order to choose the first 15 interesting photos. The top three winners from the contest are MuyHoung Lim from 12-E, Sevval Nur Kokten from 8-E, Kimhuong Ea from 7-E respectively and Mengheng Lim from 12A received an Honorable Mention. Zaman International School also arranged prizes for the winners, student who won the 1st place received $40 gift and a certificate, 2nd place received $30 gift and a certificate and 3rd place received $20 and a certificate. Their photos will be sent to AAPT High School Physics Photo Competition afterward. So let’s wait and see their result together. The winners’ photos are not on this page now as they will compete at the international stage. After the results announced the photos will be published.Quote: There are many phenomenons on Earth, but they all needed a proof, in order to prove, photograph them is a way to capture all the evidences.

By Rachana Te 8F After the mid-term exam, in the afternoon, we had a trip to Siem Reap. First we had our lunch at school; we ordered foods from one of my friend’s restaurant. We left school around 1:30. It took 8 hours on bus. It seemed boring! But our teacher asked to play games and she played with us. The sky darkened. We arrived there at about 9:00pm, we were all hungry, and we decided to go to KFC for dinner. Then we went to the hotel .To our surprise, our hotel looked amazing. We played and chatted together with our home-room teacher and our teacher assistant (via skype) until 1:00am and we were so sleepy, so we said ‘Good night to each other.’

The next day, we woke up at 7:30am we all had our breakfast, it wasn’t just breakfast but feast. We filled our tummies then went to Bayon Temple. We rode a bike to the temple; it was quite a long way to reach the temple. The sun was scorching and we all de-cided to buy hats. Ladies always find time for shopping…As we reached the destination we felt like celebrities, the flashes went on and different poses. We‘ve got multitude of photos.

After visiting the temple, we were looking for the restaurant; we decided to go to KFC. After lunch, we went to hotel to take a rest. Until 3:00pm we went to Angkor Touch. We visited each building quickly, and took many photos to remember that spectacular view of Angkor Wat. It was an amazing and wonderful temple in Cam-bodia. After dinner, we swam and played different games with our teacher until 10:00pm. And then we went to the Night Market, it was about to close but we rushed there a bit early. We bought many things. We were all tired, so we said ‘Good Night’ to each other again.

The third day, we prepared our stuff. Then we had our breakfast, and then we took some more photos. After that we went to the Crocodile farm, which was full of 500 Crocodiles. It was amazing! After visiting the farm, we went back to Phnom Penh. It also took 8 hours back too. We arrived here at 8:30. We all went back home. This was the most enjoyable trip I have ever had. We would like to say thank you so much to our homeroom teacher Ms. Arman Tynybekova for preparing this unforgettable trip for us. WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

My Sweet Memory of Siem Reap

By Khunmanuth Buth 8E

The last day of our mid-term exam, in the afternoon, we travelled to Siem Reap, the site of the ancient Kingdom of Cambodia. We had been planning this trip since last year but we never thought it would actually happen. We were all so excited because this was our first trip together since Grade 7. The seven-hour bus ride was extremely tiring yet we still managed to enjoy ourselves. We took photos, sang together, danced and ate delicious snacks. Finally around 8 pm, we arrived in Siem Reap. After the very tiring day we decided to get some good rest because we had so many plans for the following day.

So on Saturday April 7th 2012, we all gathered together in the hotel lobby after breakfast excited for a long day exploring ancient temples. Tired of the bus, we decided to rent bikes and first ride together straight to Bayon temple. The temperature was so hot and we got so hungry, we just visited Bayon around one hour to take some amazing photos.

After riding for three km from Bayon to Angkor Wat, we finally got our lunch. Reenergized, we visited Angkor Wat. There were so many tourists from different parts of the world it was mind-blowing. Again we had so much fun taking photos, running around, playing games and pranks on each other. After two hours of visiting Angkor Wat, we decided to return for dinner and then head straight for the Famous Night Market. Unfortunately, thunderous, dark clouds destroyed our plan. Lightning shook the sky! Instead of being our best evening excursion to buy stuff for those unable to come, we all decided to go swimming instead.

Saturday night was our last night together and Sunday was our last day at Siem Reap. We woke up early in the morning and after breakfast we all travelled around the province to do some shopping together at Psa Jas before going back home. After shopping, it was time to say goodbye to Siem Reap. We never wanted to leave actually. Really, we wanted to stay a bit longer but we had school on Monday.

On our way back to Phnom Penh, we went to the Croco- dile farm of our friend, Lisa. The farm was full of 500 Croco-diles. It was amazing! Before we leave the farm Lisa’s uncle treated fruit to us. Many thanks.

We repeated so many fun activities on the bus like singing and dancing. Finally, we all arrived home safe and sound. Special thanks to our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Serap CIL that took care of us and thanks to our school for supporting us to have such a fun and educational activity like visiting ancient, historical sites. We’re all already planing for another trip to a different province and feel inspired that all our dreams will cotinue to come true.
