YWCA FEE FOR SERVICE PROGRAM RESOURCES Although the number of YWCA programs funded by government and grant sources has grown substantially in recent decades, fee for service programs still represent a significant portion of YWCA offerings. YWCA fee for service programs provide connections with populations that may not be served through YWCA grant funded programs, establish a broader role for the YWCA in the community, and can be a source of steady income along with the provision of needed and/or popular services.

Considerations for All YWCA Program Planning Vibrant YWCAs make it obvious that their operations and programs are YWCA mission, curriculum and outcome based. These YWCA programs consistently communicate messages that: • boost all women's and girls' ‘drive to thrive.’ • reinforce the worth of all women and girls in school, in the

workforce, at home and with family, and in service to their communities.

• support all women's and girls' home, work, and life decisions.

• broaden the understanding of racism and sexism, and their effects.

• broaden the understanding of the worth of inclusion and diversity.

Notes

• Even though there may be information online about any particular topic, many would rather learn in a group setting and hear from an expert vs. needing to figure out what online is current/correct or not.

• Partnering with other organizations and avoiding duplication are keys to effective program development efforts. In many cases, the YWCA can serve as the site for another organization offering the program, and charge an occupancy reimbursement fee instead of earning participant income.

• Throughout development processes, non-related business income guidelines should be considered.

• Some fee for service programs listed receive subsidies from grants or the government.

• To lead these programs, many YWCAs secure community members with expertise who are willing to volunteer and have expertise they are willing to share for 6-10 sessions. Retirees are often willing to help.

• A part-time program developer/coordinator may need to be secured to ensure consistency, fitting choices, and excellent service. Fees earned should more than cover this cost.

• For some programs, participation is included in one's annual YWCA membership (e.g.: $50, $75 or $100).

• Gift cards/certificates can be created and the suggestion made that a YWCA course and/or membership be given as a present.

• For more and general planning information on fee for service program planning, see the companion resource, Understanding Fee-for-Service Models. The Models resource includes how-to find break-even points to help determine what fees should be charged.
