Within the territory, 20 mountain peaks exceed 3,000 metres. Mount Logan, the tallest at 5,959 metres, is also the fastest growing mountain in the world. The largest, non-polar ice field in the world is in the St. Elias Mountains. The ice field is believed to reach 700 metres in depth and feed glaciers up to 30 kilometres long. This large intelligent bird is one of the few that live in the territory year-round. Our floral emblem is the Fireweed. Most commonly found in old burns and open meadows, Fireweed’s magenta blooms abound from mid-July to mid-September. Lazulite, the official gemstone, is a rare, azure blue, semi- precious gemstone, found in remote northeast Yukon. The name is derived from the Arabic word “laza”, which means heaven. The sub-alpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) was selected as Yukon’s official tree in 2001. Ask for more information about the Yukon flag, Coat of Arms and Tartan at the visitor information centre. The Yukon represents 4.8% of Canada’s total land area and is the eighth largest province or territory. Within the territory, 20 mountain peaks exceed 3,000 metres.
