Located on the Klondike Highway south of Whitehorse, the village of Carcross was originally named Caribou Crossing by miners who had reached this junction point of the Tagish and Bennett lakes en route to the Klondike gold fields at Dawson. Twice a year large herds of caribou migrated across the easily forded Nares Lake shallows east of the townsite, which was no sooner developed to serve Klondike miners than it became an important stopping point for the White Pass & Yukon Railway in September 1898. The Caribou Hotel also opened in the same year and still in operation, Matthew Watson’s General Store is the Yukon’s oldest operating store.

Carcross Commons is a retail village featuring a carving shed, the Carcross Visitor Information Centre, bakery/coffee shop, a restaurant and art gallery.

Carcross Pass was completed, the final gold spike was hammered into the track here on July 29, 1900.

The name Caribou Crossing was changed to Carcross in 1902 due to the lobbying of Bishop Bompas, who had established a school for First Nations children the year before. Bompas was infuriated that mail addressed to the school was being redirected to other Caribou Crossings in British Columbia and Alaska. While the post office adopted the name change, the railway retained the station name of Caribou Crossing until 1916. The community remained an important rail depot until the station’s closure in 1982. Today the old station is still used during the summer months by White Pass & Yukon Route for

scenic rail excursions to Bennet, British Columbia and beyond all the way to Skagway, Alaska.

The original station burned down during a fire in 1910 that destroyed the station,

the Caribou Hotel, a store, and most of the other buildings in downtown Carcross. The station, hotel, and store were rebuilt within a year.

For many years the sternwheeler Tutshi stood along the shore of the

community, but in July 1990 it was destroyed by fire. The remains of the

boat have been converted into a viewing platform along with interpretive displays.

Two of the co-discoverers of the Bonanza Creek gold strike that sparked the Klondike Gold Rush are buried in the Carcross cemetery. These are Skookum Jim Mason and Dawson Charlie (sometimes known as Tagish Charlie), whose First Nations’ names were Keish and Káa Goox respectively. Also buried in the cemetery is Kate Carmack, whose First Nations’ name was Shaaw Tláa. She was Skookum Jim’s sister and, at the time of the strike, the wife of the third co-discoverer, George Carmack. In 1900, Carmack deserted Kate for a white woman and refused her any part of the fortune amassed from the gold strike, as well as access to their daughter. In 1920, she died penniless.

One kilometre north of Carcross is reputedly the world’s smallest desert––a 260-hectare expanse of sand that once lay on the bottom of a large glacial lake covering the entire valley bottom. Strong winds off Bennett Lake keep the sand here constantly shifting, rendering it difficult for plants other than lodgepole pine and kinnikinnick to grow.

The Great Depression of the 1930s meant that both tourism and mining declined, and Atlin was abandoned. Residents were isolated until 1950, when the Atlin Road was completed.

Today, Atlin is home to about 450 residents and some spectacular scenery. The main economy of Atlin is mining and tourism, but the town is also a draw for a number of artist, authors and artisans. The Atlin Arts and Music Festival brings the town alive each year in July.

Surrounded by aquamarine glacial lakes and impressive mountain peaks, the small town of Atlin, BC is truly unique. Although Atlin is located in northern British Columbia, the only way to access it is through the Yukon.

Atlin lies within the traditional territory of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation, but as elsewhere, the townsite of Atlin grew as a result of the Gold Rush. Thousands of settlers flocked to the region in 1898 and helped establish a busy mining field. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the population of Atlin was 10,000 and many building still remain from that era.

The area remained popular well into the 1920s as a tourist destination. Known as the “Switzerland of the North,” visitors and residents would arrive to Atlin by traveling north through the Inside Passage and the Alaskan Panhandle on a boat, then by

At 300 square miles, glacier-fed Atlin Lake is British Columbia’s biggest lake. It is At four miles wide and 85 miles long, although the nothern tip is in the Yukon. The name “Atlin” comes from the Tligit name Áa Tlein meaning “big lake.” The lake is popular for fishing and boating among other water activities.

The Tarahne is a luxury liner that was built in 1917 and abandonned during the Great Depression. Now it hosts a popular event called the Tarahne Tea.

Birch Mountain is the highest mountain on fresh water in North America and can bee seen across Atlin Lake from the town.

Warm Springs is a picnic area with a small meadow pool fed by warm underwater springs located 24 km down Warm Bay Road. About halfway down the road is a lookout for Llewellyn Glacier.

Teslin is a small village located along banks of Teslin Lake and Nisutlin Bay. It was a traditional meeting place and summer camp of the Tlingit people for thousands of years, until gold prospectors arrived and established a settlement en route to the Klondike. The townsite grew as a result of the presence of the Hudson’s Bay Company, the North-West Mounted Police and an Anglican mission.

Teslin, today, is home to approximately 470 residents who enjoy a prosperous community with modern amenities, as well as the many resources provided by Teslin Lake and the nearby rivers. In late summer, Chinook and Chum salmon travel up the Yukon and then the Teslin River to spawn. Autumn brings many hunters to this area for ducks, geese, and moose. A public boat ramp and launch are situated on the north side of the Nisutlin Bridge, which is the longest bridge along the Alaska Highway.

the wolf (Daklaweidi) clan, who gradually paid him back. When the original Skookum Jim House burned in the late 1960s, Joe Schinkel replicated it to honour the memory of Skookum Jim. The house remains the property of the Daklaweidi clan within the Carcross/Tagish First Nation.

The building has been renovated and moved to downtown Carcross, where is it the cornerstone of the Carcross Commons development. The exterior mural was designed in the coastal tradition by Tlingit artist Keith Wolfe Smarch and painted by Bill Oster.

Built in 1878, White Pass bought the little engine in 1899 and put her to work on the Taku Tramway the following year.

Appropriately enough, the Taku Tram was a miniature version of a railway, only two miles long, which connected Tagish Lake with Atlin Lake.

S.S. Tutshi MemorialI

The sternwheeler Tutshi was built in 1917 by the British Yukon Navigation Company to accommodate the increasing number of tourists visiting Yukon’s Southern Lakes. Tourism eventually waned but the S.S. Tutshi kept busy carrying mail and freight to mines and small communities. The completion of all-weather roads in the 1940s led to the end of the sternwheeler era and the S.S. Tutshi was decommissioned in 1955. The Yukon Government purchased the S.S. Tutshi in 1971 and began an ambitious restoration project that was nearing its end when the boat tragically caught fire in July 1990. The remains of the boat can be seen along with interpretive signage capturing it’s story.

Carcross Highlights

WP&YR Railway StationA

The station was built in 1910. The WP&YR ran passenger and freight from 1900 to 1982.

The railway was reopened in 1988 as a seasonal tourism operation. In 2006 the train resumed

scheduled service to Carcross via Bennett, B.C. The building is a designated Heritage Railway Station

of Canada.

Caribou HotelB

Built in 1910, the Caribou Hotel is one of the oldest buildings in the Southern Lakes region. The original hotel was transported to this site across Lake Bennett. In 1903, it was purchased by Dawson Charlie, a member of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and one of the discoverers of gold in the Klondike. The business prospered under several different owners until it burned to the ground in December 1909.

The owner at that time, E.W. Gideon, built a new hotel using material salvaged from a building in Conrad City. The Gideons ran the hotel until Mrs. Gideon died in 1933. Her ghost is said to roam the third floor. The hotel was also renowned for Polly the Parrot, who lived here from 1918 to 1972, and entertained the guests with his renditions of “I Love you Truly” and “Springtime in the Rockies”. The Caribou Hotel is a designated Yukon Historic Site. The hotel was purchased by Anne Morgan and Jamie Toole in 2006 and an extensive rehabilitation of the building is presently underway.

Matthew Watson General StoreC

Following the 1909 fire that destroyed much of downtown Carcross, the store was constructed from two buildings moved to Carcross from the dwindling mining communities of Conrad and Bennett.

The BarracksD

Johnny Williams, a foreman with the White Pass & Yukon Route railway, constructed this building in 1921. He used logs from trees burned in a fire near Lake Bennett. Over the years, the building has served as a private residence, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police barracks and a craft shop. In 2011, it reopened as a bakery and restaurant.

St. Saviour’s Anglican ChurchE

Bishop Bompas and his congregation constructed St. Saviour’s in 1904 on the south side of the Narrows between Bennett and Nares lakes. Skookum Jim’s daughter, Daisy, was the first person baptized here. Around 1914, the church was brought across the river by scow to its present location. Regular Sunday services are held here.

Skookum Jim HouseF

Skookum Jim had this house built in 1899, just after he had discovered gold near Dawson City, sparking the Klondike Gold Rush. He imported the lumber and furniture and had them shipped from Skagway to Lake Bennett by rail and then rafted up the lake to Carcross.

Skookum Jim died in 1916 and Johnny Johns bought the house in 1920. Johns did not live in the house, but held it in trust for

By VERN HIRSCH & JEFF BRADY

The late Vern Hirsch was the project engineer for the Alaskan section of the Klondike Highway during its

construction from 1976 to 1978. He took editor Brady up the highway soon after it opened that fall and pointed

out the sights for this highway log, which has been updated over the years and copied by other publications.

Road to the right leads to Carcross (population 436). The Carcross Visitor Center was relocated to the old train depot in July 1990 following a disastrous fire which destroyed the old sternwheeler “Tutshi,” whose burned remains are still visible. The sternwheeler used to ply the lakes between Carcross and Ben-My-Chree, a once-popular resort and garden spot. The tiny locomotive next to the White Pass depot is the “Duchess,” which ran on a $2 shuttle railroad on land between Tagish and Atlin Lakes.
