WHAT MAKES OUR CENTER SO UNIQUE?

In our beautiful three-story building located in the heart of downtown Glen Cove, our dedicated staff and extraordinary volunteers plan, develop, and coordinate programs and services for older residents in Glen Cove and its surrounding communities. For more than three decades the Glen Cove Senior Center has offered opportunities, adventures, and assistance in meeting the challenges of aging to senior citizens 60 years of age and over.

What makes our Center unique is the energy of hundreds of seniors’ spirits and the diverse continuum of care we provide for the active senior as well as the senior with special needs who benefits from our Adult Day Program and Friendly Visiting Services.

Our wealth of programs provides a variety of intellectual and recreational opportunities. Seniors can focus on their health in our multi-faceted wellness and exercise classes, brain fitness activities, workshops and health screenings or nourish their minds in our nationally recognized Life Long Learning Program, weekly discussion groups, computer training, cultural arts celebrations, excursions, and intergenerational partnerships.

We strive for excellence in all we do and are very proud of the accomplishments of our staff and volunteers who are often recognized for their efforts. Our Lifelong Learning Program was the recipient of the MindAlert Award presented by the American Society on Aging. Within the last few years, we received funding and special acknowledgement from the Unitarian Universalist Church for our highly successful Campaign Against Dementia, and we were honored to be invited by The Kimmel Foundation and Selfhelp to pilot the Long Island Virtual Senior Center educating and entertaining homebound seniors all over the country.

We take great pride in our widespread and distinctive community outreach programs. Our Center has assisted many young people through our mentoring and scholarship programs, and fundraised for people locally, nationally, and internationally in crisis. Despite our age - or perhaps because of it - we are devoted activists and continually advocate for additional housing, better healthcare, and social and financial support that foster independence, dignity, and peace of mind.

A delicious hot or cold lunch, curb-to-curb transportation and ample parking for those who drive, offer the backdrop to revisiting an old hobby, discovering a new interest, or just spending a relaxing and often inspiring afternoon with friends. The Glen Cove Senior Center is currently funded with ongoing grants from the United States Administration on Aging, the New York State Office for Aging, and the Nassau County Office for Aging, as well as generous support from the City of Glen Cove and the Glen Cove SAGE Foundation.

Dear Readers, When I became a member of the Glen Cove Senior Center, the Senior Advocate position was held by Betty Mallet. Betty was a knowledgeable person and a real fighter for the rights of sen-iors. Due to health issues unfortunately, she couldn’t continue her work and it was not easy to replace her. It is a volunteer position that requires someone who can gracefully navigate chal-lenges and introduce issues in tactful ways, and who can work with different ideas, people, and systems. I was asked by the Executive Director, Carol Waldman, if I would consider becoming the Advo-cate and my answer was yes. I was then unanimously approved by the Site Council. I soon learned that my role was a vital one, where I would be asked to act or intercede on behalf of others, to be a person whose support will inspire confidence and whose efforts will bring about change for the better. With assistance from the Center’s staff, I am working hard to keep senior issues in the forefront and will keep you updated on the progress we make. I attend monthly meetings for the aging and bring back information to our Site Council and I speak on your behalf at public hearings and legislative meetings. Now is the time to let our leg-islators know that we as seniors are entitled to support for social security, safety, scams, ade-quate transportation, and affordable housing. I welcome your thoughts and input and encourage you to join me so that we can create an Ad-vocacy Committee that offers a true representation of our senior community’s needs.

Best Regards,

Shirley Pinckney

GLEN COVE SENIORS SEE THEMSELVES IN DOCUMENTARY Highlighting late-life relationships in Glen Cove

By: Mike Conn Glen Cove Herald April 4th Edition

More than 180 senior citizens gathered at the Glen Cove Senior Center on March 21 for a cinematic look into an often-overlooked topic: the romantic lives of people in their age group.

“The Age of Love,” a documentary, followed a group of seniors in upstate Rochester several years ago as they prepared for, took part in and reflected on a speed-dating event for people 70 and older. The film focused on what it means to fall in love later in life, and how important relationships are as we age.

Director Steven Loring, of Brooklyn, said he was inspired to make the 79-minute documentary by two people in his life — his mother and uncle. After his father died, his mother told him she had no idea what her future held. “All my life, I’ve been part of a team,” Loring recalled her saying, “and as of today I’m just another old lady in the world, alone.”

Shortly after that, Loring’s 78-year-old uncle moved into a senior residential community, after living on his own for much of his life. There he met an 80-year-old woman with whom he developed a romantic relationship, which Loring said helped him realize that it’s never too late to find love.

Inspired, Loring, now 57, set out to make a film that could help debunk the stereotype that romantic love should be put aside later in life. He discovered the event in Rochester, and, working from a list of the people who had signed up, he con-tacted 30 of them, and all agreed to be interviewed and filmed.

After last Thursday’s screening of “The Age of Love,” Loring answered questions from the audience. Every participant in the speed-dating event got at least one date, he said, and many of the participants’ children hadn’t considered that their parents might be seeking love.

Several audience members said that people don’t stop needing love in old age. Some said that they still felt youthful inside. “Young is not an age,” said Lucy Van Horn. “It’s a state of mind.”

Connie Miceli said she felt a strong connection to the people in the film, and believed her fellow audience members did, too. “Love is an ageless thing,” she said. “We all know that.”

Loring concluded the Q&A session by encouraging the attendees to live as youthfully as they feel, and they responded with spirited applause.

As she was making her way out of the senior center, Nancy Stepkowski, 83, said she was moved by the film. “It ran a range of emotions,” she said. “It was just so human, and at [my] age, it’s everything I feel.”

Loring said he believed the film elicited emotional responses in part because he filmed the participants reading the results of their five-minute interactions — who was interested in dating them and who was not. “That to me was really the heart of the whole emotional experience,” he said, because some of the seniors were overjoyed with their results, while others were disappointed.

Ultimately, Loring said, he wanted to send a message to anyone who sees the film that love isn’t reserved for the young. “Love is a universal,” he said, “and I think if we’re ever going to fight the stereotypes of aging, one way we can do it is by looking at people’s hearts.”

“The Age of Love,” which was released in 2015, has been screened hundreds of times around the world. Taking the film to other countries, Loring said, helped him understand that the need for love in one’s later years is shared by many of the world’s cultures, something that he said has been a pleasant surprise. “It seems amazing to me to have tapped into some-thing so unexpected,” he added.

Carol Waldman, the senior center’s executive director, said she knew she had to bring the film to the center after viewing it at the Nassau County Office of the Aging. “It was a chance for us, with great excitement, to explore what it means to be when you get older,” Waldman said, “especially when it comes to love.” “If people stay open, if their hearts can stay open,” she added, “it’s possible to find love and friendship in their later years.”

Research shows that no one is ever “too old” to take advantage of the benefits that bilingualism can bring. Seniors usually have a better grasp of grammatical rules and syntax, and tend to have superior pattern recogni-tion and pronunciation capabilities. Becoming bilingual improves your memory and cognition, reduces depres-sion and dementia, and is extremely rewarding.

Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG: GLEN COVE SENIOR CENTER HERB AND FLOWER GARDEN By Diane Romano

This year will be our sixth year of working on our beautiful heritage herb and flower garden which is located just off our main dining room. It is an absolute pleasure to observe on a daily basis. The aroma of fresh herbs such as mint, oregano, and basil is a blessing to the senses and creates a very special atmosphere for our outdoor programming and intimate gatherings. This garden is lovingly cared for by volunteer gardeners who find new inspiration each season and by generous benefactors. Some of the facilitator are Carol Waldman, Laurie Huenteo, Mer-cedes Morales, Barbara Stango, The Sage Foundation, Diane Romano, Juliette Johnson, La-raine Peterson, Nancy Whitfield, Jean Ealy, Elizabeth Priczak, Madeline Valentini, Kathy Dales-sandro and of course Mother Nature.

The aroma of herbs and flowers offer peaceful moments, smiles and nour-ishment to the body and soul. Each year brings new gifts and challenges but is always well worth the effort. The garden is dedicated to our seniors at our beloved Glen Cove Senior Center and we are always looking for new friends to join in, get their hands dirty, and help us grow. Please reach out to Mercedes if you have any garden furnishings that might enhance our garden space and to Diane if you would like to be a part of the beautification team.

SENIORS LEARN TO PAINT LIKE “DOG VINCI” By: Jill Nossa

Glen Cove Record Pilot

Members of the Glen Cove Senior Center recently witnessed an unusual but special phenomenon: a painting dog. The black Labrador- Golden Retriever mix, Dagger, led a work-shop along with his owner, Yvonne Dagger, showing off his abstract painting skills to the delight of attendees. Dubbed “DogVinci,” Dagger has been painting for more than three years and has sold thousands of dollars’ worth of paintings, all of the proceeds of which are donated to charity. “Dagger has produced more than 500 works of art and fund-raises for Canine Companions for Independence, St. Jude’s, animal shelters and other charities,” said Yvonne. Dagger was born into the organization Canine Companions for Independence, which Yvonne and her husband volunteer for. When he was born, he was named for their family, in Santa Rosa, CA, and was sent to a training center on Long Island. The Dagger family “puppy-raised” him for 18 months before he went on to advanced training, where he learned skills like opening and closing drawers and doors, turning lights on and off and retrieving items. However, he had certain fears he couldn’t get over—he’s afraid of stairs and afraid of the dark—so he was released from the program after four months as we not eligible to be a service dog. The family adopted him and prom-ised to keep working with him. Yvonne is an artist and one day, she said, she was working in her studio when Dagger came up to her and started nudging her. “I said, ‘Do you want to paint like Mommy?’ And as a joke, I took a tabletop easel and basically utilized the command words he had learned in advanced training,” said Yvonne. Because service dogs wear vests to signify they’re going to work, she got him a beret to wear. She made him a special brush out of a meat tenderizer, loaded up the brush with different colors on it and taught him to paint. She put the brush in his mouth and told him to push. Like all dogs, Dagger does not always cooperate, works for treats and sometimes prefers to beg for belly rubs. He only paints under Yvonne’s direction. Still, the fact that he’s able to paint on a canvas is unique, a fact that Yvonne stresses. “I do have other dogs, one of which is also a release dog from Canine Companions for Independence, but she has no interest in painting,” said Yvonne. “I’ve tried...she takes the brush out of her mouth, drops it off on the floor and goes to lay down on the couch. She made a point of noting that all of his paintings are Dagger’s own creations. “Wherever that brush stroke lands, it lands. Nothing has been finessed, nothing has been changed—they’re Dagger’s.” Dagger’s talent has received a lot of press over the last few years and he is even featured in a documentary. He is exclusively represented by Long Island Picture Frame & Art Gallery, with locations in Oyster Bay and Massapequa, where he has held shows. After learning Dagger’s story, the seniors learned how to paint in the DogVinci style—“pure, true abstract art.” “I don’t think there will ever be another dog like Dagger,” Yvonne said. “He’s so special.”
