History

There were originally four pilots:

Manchester Brighton

Hull Middlesbrough

•  There are now over 40 Young Advisors teams operating in England

•  We have trained over 1500 young people

And Now?

There were originally four pilots:

What do they offer?

Young people are:

•  Innovative

•  They are experts on the services they receive

•  In contact with other Young People

•  They know their neighbourhoods better than us

So why don’t we like them? •  Media •  Education •  Youth Services •  Employment •  Crime and ASB •  Scared of the Kids? (Stuart Waiton)

What they are really like: •  70.2% of participants agreed or strongly agreed

with the statement, “I feel like I contribute to my community.”

•  46.7% of participants regularly volunteer. •  50% of participants felt they didn’t know enough

about opportunities to help out in their community •  25% thought adults had negative perceptions and

so didn’t get involved

Why involve? •  More cohesive communities

•  Improved neighbourhoods and services

•  Greater reach into communities (stagecoach)

•  More resources human / financial

•  Improved skills in communities

Why Housing? •  Percentage of people under 25 living in social

housing? 40%

•  Housing organisations in a unique position

•  Congruent agenda to Yps – Community!

•  Perfect partners for other services

•  Gap for commissioned services and funding

How to do it

•  Decision making

•  Design – services and hardware

•  Delivery

•  Consultation

•  Promotion

•  Inspection / assessment
