...Your.Daily.Fix.................Relay foR life by Paul MacNeil The town of Eastend will be looking to recapture some of the same magic it en-joyed four years ago when the community hosted a highly successful Southwest Relay for Life celebration. “When Eastend last held the Relay For Life in 2009, it was an incredible experi-ence for all of those involved,” said Joan McNaughton, who co-chaired the event with Shannon Morris four years ago. “We are really looking forward to spending a special night with all of our old friends and supporters, as well as having the oppor-tunity to make new friends in 2013. We hope to see teams from our surrounding
communities join the fight for life with us in Eastend on May 24-25.” McNaughton, a cancer survivor herself, has returned to help organize this year’s event and will co-chair the special fund-raising celebration with Yvonne Neufeld, who is also a cancer survivor. Right now the committee’s big focus is recruiting teams for the big event. Neufeld is also heading the Teams Com-mittee. Anyone wanting to register a team, or find out more information, can con-tact her at [email protected] or by phoning her cell at 306-295-7031. raising and participants help raise mon-ey through pledge sheets and a $10 entry fee. Every relay team participant receives a toque and a meal ticket for the chili sup-per on Friday. Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour overnight fundraising event that brings people and communities together to celebrate life and fight cancer. The event is appropriately named the Southwest Relay For Life, as communities in the southwest will share the hosting re-sponsibilities from one year to the next. Relay For Life has enjoyed enormous success in those communities and orga-nizers are inviting all survivors and pre-vious participants to join the Eastend cel-ebration. Anyone interested in getting involved in the Southwest Relay for Life can also contact Joan (306-295-7804, [email protected]).

Fighting Cancer is a Team Effort
Get your friends, family and co-workers together and join the
fight for LIFE.
Relay For Life is a 12-hour overnight, non-competitive event. Teams of 12-15 friends, family members or co-workers get together and run, walk, or stroll around a track as part of a Relay For Life team. On Relay For Life night, participants pitch tents which may be decorated in their particular theme. The tent serves as the team’s headquarters for the evening. It is a time for you and your team to join in the celebration of survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, entertainment, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. It’s a night for all ages!

Spring Yard CleanUp
• CLEAR DRAINAGE DITCHES Leaves and debris gather in drainage areas over the winter. Now is the time to ensure that the spring rains will have adequate run-off. Spring seedlings do best in soil which drains well. Because vegetative growth is at a low point in early spring, this is the easiest time of year for clear-ing drainage ditches. And be sure to put the cleared material, usu-ally dead leaves and small branches, into the compost. Spring compost piles are commonly short on carbon-rich materials, and every addition helps.
• REPAIR ANY BOWED SIDES TO RAISED BEDS. FIx TRELLISES AND FENCING.Soggy winter soil puts a strain on raised beds; sometimes a stake will rot and give way. Any bowed or leaning sides should be fixed now. Dig back the soil behind the bowed side and drive in new stakes on the inside of the sideboards with a slight inward lean. Push sideboards up to stakes and fas-ten well with screws or nails.

thIS dAy In hIStory:rECord-brEAKInG tornAdo WAVE bEGInSMAy 1St, 2003 A record-breaking wave of tornadoes begins across the southern and midwestern United States on this day in 2003. By the time the wave is over, more than 500 tornadoes are re-corded for the month, shattering the previous record by more than 100. The amazing spate of twisters followed an unusually quiet month of April, when tornadoes are usually most frequent. March and April also saw a lack of significant thunderstorms, another highly unusual situation. But the residents of the South and Midwest were not in the clear. In 2003, the moist, warm air necessary for the formation of tornadoes did not arrive from the Gulf of Mexico until May and, when it did, weather conditions in these regions changed suddenly. The first 10 days of May brought an incredible amount of destruc-tive weather to the central United States, including more than 300 tornadoes. The best available records regarding tornadoes in the second half of the 20th century show that the previous high for tornadoes in a month was 399 in June 1992. May 2003 had a remarkable 516 recorded twisters. However, the 38 people killed in May 2003 were far fewer than the record 163 dead in May 1953. The death toll was lower because 2003 saw no F5 tornadoes (the highest intensity with winds in excess of 260 mph) and very few measured as high as F4 (with winds in excess of 207 mph). Illinois alone had 74 recorded tornadoes in May 2003, al-most 50 percent more than its previous monthly high. Missou-ri suffered through 71 twisters in the month, which dwarfed the pervious high of 29 in December 1982. The worst stretch of tornadoes over a small stretch of time was recorded April 3-4, 1974, when 148 individual tornadoes touched down across the Midwest in an 18-hour period. During a single hour in the middle of this vast storm, 20 tor-nadoes were recorded at the same time. More than 300 people died in this single storm.

ClEVEr KIdS:
A police officer found a perfect hiding place for watching for speed-ing motorists. One day, the officer was amazed when everyone was under the speed limit, so he investigated and found the problem. A 10 years old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand painted sign which said “Radar Trap Ahead.” A little more investigative work led the officer to the boy’s accom-plice: another boy about 100 yards beyond the radar trap with a sign reading “TIPS” and a bucket at his feet full of change.

Jeb and Jethro live in the hills, about 5 miles outside of town. Jeb asks Jethro to go in to town to pick up some lum-ber. Jethro walks the 5 miles to town to the local lumberyard. “Jeb says we’re gonna need some 4 x 2’s” Jethro tells the yardman. “Do you mean 2 x 4’s?” asks the yardman. “Well, I don’t rightly know, I better go ask Jeb” says Jethro and walks the 10 miles to the hills and back to town. “Jeb says we’re gonna need 2 x 4’s” Jethro tells the yardman. “Now, how many 2 x 4’s will you need?” asks the yardman. “Well, I don’t rightly know, I bet-ter go ask Jeb.” says Jethro, and again walks the 10 miles to the hills and back to town. “Jeb says were gonna need about 40 of ‘em” Jethro tells the yardman. “Now, how long will you need them?” asks the yardman. “Well, I don’t rightly know, I better go ask Jeb” says Jethro and yet again walks the 10 miles to the hills and back to town. Upon returning Jethro says to the yardman, “Jeb says you better give ‘em to us for a while . . . we’re gonna build a barn.”

Dog Care Tips!1. Using metal water dishes outside in winter may be a risk, because your pet’s tongue could stick to the frozen metal. In the summer, metal bowls can get very hot and
burn your dog.
2. If you have a puppy that pees on your carpet: After soaking up most of the mess with a paper towel,
sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) over the area and leave it to absorb both
the traces of urine and the odor.
3. If your dog runs away from you and you finally catch up to it, no matter how angry you are at the dog, do
not yell or smack it or your dog will never come to you when called for fear of being punished.
4. Do not leave your dog unattended on a
choke chain. The chain could get caught and strangle the dog.
5. Do not leave your dog in the car unattended on hot
days. Even with the windows open, temperatures in cars WILL reach deadly levels.
It only takes five minutes! If you see a dog locked in a very hot car do something to try and help
it before it’s too late.

ReGiNa HoSTS iNNoVaTiVe iNTeRNaTioNal CoNfeReNCegov.ca - evraz Place will be the hotspot in Regina today as 2,300 delegates from across North america converge for the 21st annual Williston Basin Petroleum Conference (WBPC). Hosted by the Saskatchewan Geological Survey and the Petroleum and Tech-nology Research Centre (PTRC), the event is a trade show and technical conference for delegates from all areas of the oil indus-try including geologists, engineers, company executives, service companies, software/data vendors and oilfield safety equipment providers. “Saskatchewan is a leader on a national and international front,” energy and Resources Minister Tim McMillan said. “last year we broke another record for oil production and we are confident that Saskatchewan has not only the resources but also the business cli-mate to maintain this momentum now and into the future.” Throughout the conference, delegates will also have the op-portunity to visit more than 300 exhibitor booths and equipment displays both inside and outside the Credit union eventplex. The technical program runs on May 1 and 2 and addresses several top-ics including exploration and development, enhanced oil recovery and emerging technologies. Visit the website www.wbpc.ca for a detailed agenda.
