A message from the President ... 36 Beach Street • Wickford, RI 02852 • 401.294.6840 www.wickfordart.org • [email protected] Hello Everyone, Its election time! Please attend our election of officers this year, December 4th 12-1pm ... your vote will count. Don’t forget the Holiday Gala and Little Picture Show, the same day from 1-4pm. If you would like to think about becoming an officer we would love to have you. The nominating committee is on the hunt for a few officer seats, anyone interested? Contact our committee chair, Liz Donovan [email protected] Congratulations to everyone who was accepted into the Abstract/Avante garde show. It inspired me so much! I cant believe I had the priviledge of handing out first place to Daphne Henderson, past president from 1975. What a moment! Congratulations also to the photographers who were accepted into the Open Juried Photo Show. It’s a must see show filled with talent and amazing creative techniques. LOOKING AHEAD FOR 2012 — I am working on a grant proposal being offered from the R.I. Foundation. This grant can be used to set up our new goal of opening the scholarships statewide! We can also use this grant for board development as well. We will be looking into separating the role of treasurer/bookkeeper. Also, the By-laws review committee has been meeting and working on the restructure of the By-laws. They will be helping to change and update the By-laws that are suppose to be reviewed every year. We are also looking for a Publicity Chairperson. This so important to the structure of the association in getting the word out there on all our gallery happenings. Also, I would like to appoint a Volunteer Coordinator. This seat will help with the organization with special events and work won’t always fall on the same people pulling the load. Lastly, we still need a hospitality chair, we haven’t had one since June. Please congratulate our Gallery Director, Sarah, she is becoming our very first employee as of January 1st. Next spring be on the lookout for another volunteer appreciation party ... it was fun this year ... can’t wait to have another. It will be the Art Festival’s 50th anniversary this coming year! It will be a very exciting and proud time. LOOKING BACK AT 2011 — Some things were down right bummers — first our president resigned, then Hurricane Irene did $24,000.00 worth of damage to our building — the hot water heater broke and the septic pump broke too. We were covered by insurance and were able to have a new kitchen installed ... so, not all bad ... we got through it! Also, I wrote a program narrative and received $919.00 from RISCA ... this will be used for soundproofing the gallery and will benefit all members. And finally, we are getting new outside lights soon, I promise! A NOTE FROM MY HEART — Being president for the last 5 months has been a huge challenge. The roof damage was a terrible distraction. My daily thoughts have been with all my artist friends and members who are all striving for the same things. The Wickford Art Association has so much to offer now. My goals have been to take what we have now and enhance it, not to grow out but focus inward. We have much to do next year and I am reaching out and setting up resources for quality improvement. I’m hoping if we get the grant it will help in some other areas that need fine tuning. What would you consider to be the first priority to be done? Respectfully Yours, Pamela Reed Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. • Sunday 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. The purpose of the Wickford Art Association is to educate its membership, the local arts community and the general public, and to promote the arts in the community. Photographic Arts GroupAs the year comes to a close and we reflect on all that we have to be thankful fo, I’dlike to thank all the members of our Photographic Arts Group for the continuedenthusiastic support of each other. We are truly fortunate to have such a fun group ofphotographers. Each meeting I’m amazed with the variety and quality of work that isdisplayed. I believe the recent Annual Open Photography Show is proof of the talentin our organization. The support, encouragement and camaraderie that is sharedamong the members makes each meeting a fun learning experience.

I’d also like to thank the Board of the Wickford Art Association, Sarah Tallarico andall the volunteers for all the work that they do to support the organization and gallery.Without them we would not have such a fine gallery and organization to showcase ourwork. I’d encourage all members to contact Sarah or the Executive Board to find outhow you can contribute to make this the most successful art association in the state!

Final touches are being put on our Winter Photo Scavenger Hunt. Laurie Brandt, winner of our last photo hunt, is putting together a contest unlike any other we’vehad! Stay tuned for details.

ASSOCIATION NEWSMusings from the Director’s desk;I hope this letter finds you well in every way. This year has flown byand it hardly seems possible that it is almost over. Next week isThanksgiving, which may or may not have passed before you receivethis newsletter. That being the case I would like to take the time tothank so many of you who have personally enriched my life. First of all I would like to thank the 3 members of the Board who interviewed me and gave me the opportunity to serve as yourdirector. Thank you for the vote of confidence and I hope I am living up to your expectations. Next I would like to thank all theother visionaries who I am honored to know here (both on theboard and in the membership) who are giving sacrificially of theirtime and talents to help to bring WAA to the next level. It is volunteers who make help this place succeed and without them we simply would cease to exist.I want to first thank Howard and now Pam for their leadership and guidance throughout these last 15 months. I want to thank allthe open studio folks who come out Tuesdays and Thursdays andsurround me with their creative energy and enthusiasm. I am thankful for all our teachers who provide an environment for peopleto learn more about art and the photo arts! These are people of greatenergy, positive people going deeper into their gifts and spreadingthe wealth. Thanks for all those who come in and share with me their wisdomand expertise from their experiences and life and with which I amable to learn and grow in this job. Thanks to all of you, the

Members, for being a part of WAA and believing in yourself enough to invest in us. Together we can do great things. Particular thanks goes to New England Renovation & ConstructionServices who became our best friends when we had the storm damage during the Summer. They were forced to work around ourschedule which meant they had to tear down their scaffolding andclean up and get out of our way only to have to set it up on aSunday afternoon, work through the night and next day and be outby Tuesday. They replaced our roof between rainstorms and were oncall whenever we had a need. There were many days and nights thatPam and I went from bucket to bucket catching new streams untilwe could finally get the roof on. They would go up on the roof, dayor night to put up new tarps or nail them down again because of therain and the wind. When the insurance company was only going toreplace the bottom kitchen cabinets they put the top ones in and anew counter top, sink and faucet! Tom and Bruce and your crew,THANKS SO MUCH!!!! And finally my heartfelt thanks goes to Lora and Walter Schroderfor being simply the best. Lora’s dedication as a volunteer is outstanding and Walter is not too shabby either. Lora, I wouldn’twant to be here without you!So as we move into winter and the Little Picture show turns into2012 with it’s new classes and shows. I thank you all ahead for thetime and energy you have yet to give. Happy Holidays and a HappyNew Year!Sincerely Appreciative,Sarah Tallarico
