LEARN FROM THE BESTWe place a strong focus on faculty-student interaction. Our faculty are experts renowned in their fields, but they are also dedicated teachers. Students go beyond classroom learning and make real contributions through scholarly and research endeavors. Many faculty members provide opportunities for undergraduates to engage in their research projects.

Seokheun Choi created an origami battery that generates power from microbial respiration, delivering enough energy to run a biosensor with nothing more than a drop of bacteria-containing liquid.

Isaac Vaghefi studied the smartphone habits of students, and says it’s important to monitor usage to prevent us becoming too reliant, which can lead to addiction.

David Davies studies how people who consistently experience high levels of stress may be stimulating bacteria that can cause heart attacks and strokes.

Sang Won Yoon and Sarah Lam are using 500 million tweets to develop an algorithm that can predict an individual’s behavior.

Lubna Chaudhry conducts fieldwork to understand the impact of armed conflict on children and youth in Swat Valley, Pakistan.

Linda Spear’s work focuses on the con-sequences of alcohol exposure and/or stress-ors during adolescence on later neurobehavioral function, with a focus on social anxiety and later alcohol and drug use.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Participating in honors courses or programs provides outstanding preparation for careers and graduate school.

Binghamton University offers honors in nearly every major and a host of honor societies. We also have several exclusive honors programs that are by invite only.

FRESHMAN RESEARCH IMMERSION PROGRAMBinghamton’s Freshman Research Immersion (FRI) program is one of only four in the U.S!

FRI offers academically talented, first-year students to start building a lifelong career in the sciences.

For three semesters, students in FRI work alongside faculty who are tackling big-world issues — from developing clean energy to understanding climate change, to preventing Parkinson’s disease. In the process, students build enriching professional relationships and set their course for college and career success.

UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM A small number of incoming freshmen are invited each year to join the Binghamton University Scholars Program, which provides exceptional students with opportunities to be mentored by top-level administrators and faculty, showcase their work locally and nationally, and enjoy unique access to graduate assistantships and specialized internships.

PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS SCHOLARSPwC Scholars is the honors program in Binghamton’s business school and provides students with unparalleled leadership and networking experiences that prepare students to enter the business world as distinguished professionals.

A favorite is the annual international travel experience where Scholars go abroad for 10 days to learn about a country’s culture and business environment. Past trips have included Germany, South Africa, Italy and Japan.

SUMMER SCHOLARS AND ARTISTS FELLOWSHIPSThis program offers financial awards to students conducting special research, scholarship or creative activities during the summer. With guidance from faculty mentors, students have pursued topics such as integrative neuroscience and music, anxiety disorders and Parkinson’s disease.

“I moved from Shanghai, China, to the U.S. when I was 16. I am triple majoring in Arabic, French and comparative literature with a minor in global studies.

“I have met some of the most amazing people here. My professors are my academic as well as life mentors. Binghamton has helped me build my academic and professional skills and even explore the world. (I studied abroad in Morocco for six months!) These wonderful experiences have helped me to find my true passion: international relations. I look forward to exploring the world with my Binghamton spirit!”

With more than 300 student clubs and organizations, including a variety of international student associations, Binghamton University is a vibrant, engaging campus.

International undergraduate students are required to live on campus their first year. Living in a residence hall is an excellent way to make connections between living and learning experiences, make lasting friendships with U.S. and other international students, and live within walking distance of classes and our many dining halls.

After the first year, undergraduate students can live off campus in the Binghamton city area. The affordability and availability of off-campus housing, coupled with free bus service, make it easy to find housing in the surrounding area.

BINGHAMTON

LIFE IN GREATER BINGHAMTONBinghamton is the birthplace of IBM and Link Simulators. The industry clusters of the Southern Tier (the upstate region of New York where Binghamton is located) include defense, distribution, insurance, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing.

Downtown Binghamton is located a short ride from campus. Two convenient bus systems take Binghamton students to shopping malls, grocery stores, movies and more at no cost! Students enjoy going downtown to cafés, dance clubs and galleries, and to cheer on the city’s professional baseball and hockey teams.

Binghamton is a safe, friendly and affordable community that is easily accessible by bus, car and plane, and is close to many cities including a three-hour drive to New York City. Each year, hundreds of student participate in “Binghamton in the City,” a full week of networking events hosted by Binghamton.

“I have never seen a more beautiful fall season than at Binghamton!

“There are so many things I like about Binghamton. I came here because it was affordable and because I fell in love with the campus. The students are welcoming, the professors really want you to do well, and the career center will help you with your resume and to look for jobs before you graduate.

“I’m a teaching assistant for anatomy and physiology and am also involved in the Student Ambassador Club. There’s plenty to do on campus, but the bus system (which is free!) makes it easy to get around when you want to explore the city of Binghamton.”
