Standing up for dietetics
Jo Instone, Head of External Affairs
Standing up for dietetics!
- Are you ready?
15
We know we’re great – we can prove
that we deliver effective care, can save
money and improve quality of life
But do the people that count know?
How do we spread the word?
Dietitians need to influence local decision makers in order to:
• To protect dietetic services • To expand dietetic services
The Influencing Action Pack and website pages will help you!
https://www.bda.uk.com/professional/influencing/influencing_home
16
Who should we influence?
• Managers in your Trust – nursing, medical, AHP, Public
Health directors
• Medical consultants
• CCG commissioners
• Local councillors
• Local politicians
The ‘Elevator Pitch’
17
What is an ‘elevator pitch’?
This is a brief, persuasive speech that will promote the
value of your service – delivered in a short time frame of a
minute or so.
Where and when can it happen?
18
Who can do one?
• Qualified dietitians at all levels
• Dietetic support workers
How? – 3 simple steps!
1.Introduce yourself
2. ‘Did you know…’
make your point
succinctly
3. Leave your
stakeholder with an
‘ask’ / action
19
Did you know…?
• Evidence from your service - audits etc.– “A recent audit in our service showed that 79% of
patients seen by our service achieve their weight loss
targets within a year”
• Evidence from national research– “National research shows that early intervention by
dietitians reduces the demand on services elsewhere
e.g. diabetes services”
Key Facts sheets:
• Obesity• Malnutrition• Mental Health• Eating Disorders• Learning Disabilities• Critical care• Dementia• Diabetes• Oncology• Sports nutrition• Neurosciences• Food Services• Appropriate prescribing
of nutritional products in primary care
• Renal
20
Actions and Asks for your
stakeholder• Would you like to come and see our weight
management service in action?
• May I call you later on in the week to discuss this
further?
• May I email you some more information about
the services delivered by our dietetic team?
• May I present the findings of our audit/research
at the next managers meeting / MDT meeting?
Have a go!

Research
Definition
• Aims to derive new knowledge which is
potentially generalisable or transferable.
Audit and service evaluation involve lots of
research skills, and avoid some of the
complications
http://www.apcrc.nhs.uk/governance/is_it_re
search.htm
Audit
• Part of a cycle
• Does not involve a completely new
treatment or practice
• Addresses a clearly defined audit question
• Uses robust methodology
• Measures against an established standard
• Generates evidence to demonstrate a
level of compliance with agreed standards
24
How to get involved
Should be part of your job description
• Start by repeating an audit as part of the
cycle
Can the original audit be improved?
– Was the method robust?
– Could the data collection be expanded?
• Could you publish the results?
– DT
– Trust newsletter
How to get involved
• Initiate a new audit
• What standards exist in your area?
• What are neighbouring trusts auditing?
• Develop a student project
• Get help from clinical audit department
• Get management support
• Share the outcome
25
Audit as CPD
What did you learn?
• Clear aim
• Robust methodology
• People skills
• Data collection
• Analysis
• Writing up
• Presentation skills
Service Evaluation
Aims to judge a services’
effectiveness/efficiency through assessment
of its aims activities outcomes and cost.
May also be called benchmarking or
organisational audit.
http://www.apcrc.nhs.uk/evaluation/
26
Service Evaluation
Usually designed to answer the question
“What standard does this service achieve?”
• Monitor how well the service meets its aim
and how it can be improved
– What is the aim of your service?
– What is the aim of the evaluation?
– Interviews or focus groups to get service
user/provider opinion
Process
• How can you evaluate the service
Get involved
Outcomes
• Data collection
– Interviews, focus groups, questionnaires
• What questions are you trying to answer?
• Are there validated questionnaires available?
• Who will do the interviews?
• Are there conflicts of interest?
Ethical approval may not be needed but the
work should still be ethical
27
Get involved
Data analysis
• Consider this before you collect the data
• Do you have the skills necessary
• How can you acquire them?
How will the analysed data allow you to
show that the service met its aim?
How will you share the work you have done?
CPD - What have you learnt?
Research Projects
Derives generalisable new knowledge
You already have lots of the skills needed
Question your practice
• Would another treatment option be better?
May compare interventions or evaluate an
experience
Needs ethical approval
