• Few fungicides are registered today in the USA– Chlorothalanil (Bravo, Echo)– Quadris– Headline (as of 11/30/04)

• Additional products are needed• USDA had originally identified seven candidate chemistries

(incl. Headline) for use against Asian soybean rust• MN/SD submitted a Quarantine Sec. 18 Exemption Request in

early 2004 for these seven fungicides• Additional states can use the MN/SD request as a template for

their own state requests• It is anticipated all soybean-growing states (~ 30 states) will

submit for the Quarantine Sec. 18 Exemption

– Limited, regional soybean fungicide market prior to ASR, few alternative markets

– Excess inventory problematic for several years

– Balancing inventory vs. threat?

Industry Experiences with ASR: 2007• Fungicides were not widely used for ARS

control in 2007 due to late disease development and spread, supplies were more than adequate to meet demand

• Industry scouting/monitoring programs maintained

• EPA approved more fungicides (Sec. 18/ Sec. 3 ) for ASR control

but widespread annual epidemics in the major soybean-production areas are unlikely.

• ASR will remain a late season soybean disease potential

• Southern soybean areas will likely be impacted by ASR annually.

How will Industry respond in the future?

Industry will continue to support thesoybean industry with effective and widely available fungicide solutions to maximize

yields

1. New fungicide registrations2. Search for fungicide with new modes of action 3. Integrated disease control management approach.

Tie in ASR with secondary disease control. This will lead to improved grain yields and quality.
