Readers AdvisoryThe ability to ask someone about their reading preferences and being able to interpret their answers (or non-answers as often the case is) with sensitivity to their needs.

In other words, what I like to read isn’t what matters; it’s what the person standing in front of me likes to read that matters. More than that, though, it’s about not judging the readers’ tastes.

Why does good readers’ advisory matter?

There is nothing better than seeing a customer walk out of a library with exactly the kind of book they want to read because you took the time to listen to what they like and offer them something that makes them excited about reading.

Tell us about some books and authors you didn’t like and why

G by John Berger - I have no idea what they were thinking in the 70s. The pictures made someone who was looking over my shoulder freak out.

I'm not keen on books with dark themes of family dysfunction etc. I don't like violent or harrowing themes in fiction.

I won't read books where the first words in the blurb mention a character's brutal murder. Tell us about some books and authors you’ve enjoyed

I think I'd like political thrillers but just not with too high a body count because that starts to become absurd.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your reading or interests that might help us?

I enjoy novels because lots of reading.
