Hello Holly Tree Members, October is here and we are having great weather. I hope that everyone is enjoying the South Carolina Fall season. Your annual meeting went very well and Nat Banks, Tim Schwab, and Dan O’Shaughnessey were elected to the Board of Governors with Trey Werner becoming the new President. Also, if you are interested in serving on a committee, please send us your name and we will give it to the appropriate board member. Hooray! Hooray! The driving range has finally opened! The golf cart parking is in front of the tee area during range hours; after that automobiles can park there. We ask that you leave these spaces for the members that will benefit the most from parking here. We hope to have the chipping green open in October and the skills area is TBD. Holly Tree will have a 40th Anniversary Party on Friday the 18th which includes food on the Piazza, music, and fireworks. Come on out and enjoy the atmosphere. Tennis leagues are in full force and we had a great showing at State in September. Our 9.0 Combo finished 2nd. Way to go! Also, remember the Saturday morning socials are a great way to meet new friends so come and play. Food and Beverage will have a new menu roll out this month around the 15th. We are finalizing it now and making sure we get the best product for the menu. I invite you to come on out and watch the football games in the grill or dining room. The lounge areas are comfortable and the drinks are cold! Finally, thank you for the membership support of the projects and membership recruitment; the membership levels are increasing and this keeps the club healthy. Remember, we are strong when we work together for the club. See you at the club! Joseph R. Jackson General Manager

October is here —the leaves are beginning their colorful transformation, football season is in full swing, and as usual thanks to our superintendent, John Sheran, the golf course is in the best Condition of the year. With the cooler weather upon us, we encourage everyone to bring the Family, and join us for a few extra rounds of golf. We just wanted to extend a big thank you to everyone on their patience regarding the driving range, chipping greens and skills area. Mother Nature was not very cooperative with growing grass this summer with all of the rain and cooler than normal temperatures. I’m sure the wait will make things much more enjoyable once everything is open. With the greens healing from their aeration, please remember to take care of them by repairing all of your ball marks plus any others you may see. This includes your chip shots and sculled shots. We often forget about these because they are typically very close to the green. Being more aware of this allows us to play on some of the best greens in the state of SC year round. As a reminder, driving a golf car is no different than driving a car. All players must have a valid driver’s license in order to operate a golf car at Holly Tree. This is for the safety of all players—your group as well as other groups on the golf course. This includes on the golf course, going from the driving range to the course and in the parking lot. All of these areas can be very dangerous. Wow!!! Look at all of these Hole in One’s! Bill Morin - Hole #15 Sabine Crehan - Hole #2 John Slipke - Hole #11 Jeff Rogers - Hole #8 Congratulations to everyone!!

GROUNDS NEWS
The aeration on Sunday night, September 8th through Tuesday, September 10th went well. It looked like we were going to have some problem with the cloudy weather then it cleared. Then the electrical power went out for a few hours and we had to wait longer before we could drag the greens in with the sand on them because we would not be able to water them. The dragging would scuff and bruise the grass some and without water immediately after dragging, liming, seeding and fertilizing the greens would burn. So we had to stop the todressing portion for 3 hours until the power came back on. We were just happy to be able to water the greens. I thought we were in trouble and were going to be put behind a whole day and have about 6 greens burned pretty bad. So, I consider us very fortunate the power company was able to correct the problem along with everyone else in the areas who was without electrical service. We have come back and fertilized the greens once since the initial aeration plus top-dressed an additional 2 times. The second being today Thursday, September 26th. A few places are still not grown in, parts of the putting green, 9 & 18, 11 and 17. These were areas where the greens roots were the weakest and the grass had ripped as the aeration cores were removed. We have been topdressing the driving range tee and fertilizing it about 5 times to get it grown in. The other new areas we are growing in are behind the driving range in growth because they are not in the most open areas for sun and a lot of rain, erosion and washouts. Some of the wet areas and shaded areas needed extra sod added where they have not filled in enough. Trying to get everything grown in as much as we can before cool weather. Sorry for any inconvenience and hope all of you have a pleasant fall. John Sheran, CGCS Jason, Terry and Crew

Fall is finally here, and the weather is absolutely perfect for playing tennis. The courts have been super busy with the many Holly Tree teams playing Fall League and also the two Junior Holly Tree teams playing Greenville Junior Team Tennis. Good luck to all the players this season! The Club Championship was September 20th-22nd. We had a great turnout and appreciate everyone coming out to have fun and play some great tennis.
The 2013 Club Champions are … (drum roll please)…

4.0 Men’s Doubles - Steve Hesketh and Cameron Blackwell

In addition, the 6.5 senior 55 and over women’s team has just been invited to State. We are very proud of all of the Holly Tree teams for representing the club and Greenville so well. The next Friday Night Social is scheduled for October 18th at 6:30pm. Stop by or call to sign up at the Pro Shop. On November 15th-17th, we have a Junior Tournament scheduled. Please sign up your junior player and come out to watch the up and coming tennis stars. Next time you are in the Pro Shop, be sure to check out our new Fall Collection line of outerwear. New pullovers and jackets are available, in limited quantity, just in time for the cool weather. Get them while you still can! Due to all of the back-to-back matches going on right now, we would like to encourage all players to sweep their courts after their match. This is not a policy. We just ask that you do it as a courtesy to your fellow players. Last but not least, we would like to announce that Chris Melsom has been named the new Head Tennis Pro. Please give Chris your congratulations next time you see him at the courts. It’s not how you start, but how you finish! See you at the courts. Greg Childs Tennis Director Chris Melsom Head Tennis Pro
