On the cover

Side Splitter headline act Rhys Nicholson is in Hami Hill to make you LOL. Photographer: Daniel Boud.

Message from the MayorAs the City continues to roll out its CCTV network in an effort to reduce incidents of damage on community facilities and other acts that impact on the security, safety and welfare of our residents, business owners and those who choose to visit our City, it is always pleasing to receive positive feedback from their use.

The City’s Memorandum of Understanding with WA Police plays a vital role in defining the need for sharing intelligence, resources and preventative actions to minimise crime. The City’s CCTV network is an integral part of that strategic partnership. The City’s Community Safety and Crime Prevention Committee also play a key role as does the CoSafe service. They continue to not only be responsive to community safety matters but are proactive in identifying potential incidents with a direct line to WA Police, and sharing intelligence regularly as and when needed. Thousands of calls are received each year from residents wanting to report matters they see as being important to the safety and security of their neighbourhood. These calls clearly demonstrate the

community’s regard for the 7 day/ 24 hour CoSafe service.

The City’s Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Reference Committee provides a further connection with our community, meeting on a regular basis to share information and trends occurring in their neighbourhoods. The NHW volunteers can be seen out in the community at various events providing information and guidance to individuals and families. Everyone has an opportunity to keep their neighbourhoods safe by taking an active interest as a part of the ‘eyes on the street’ campaign. The more members of the community that get involved, the greater the positive vibes and flow on benefits for us all.

To obtain more information on the above mentioned program please call the City’s contact centre on 08 9411 3444, cockburn.wa.gov.au or [email protected]

• Soft scrunchable plastics – plastics that easily scrunch into a ball including plastic bags, cling wrap, chip and cereal packets. Take these to REDcycle bins at major supermarkets

6 COCKBURN.WA.GOV.AU

Changes to recycling and how they will affect you Western Australia’s recycling operators have changed what they will allow in yellow-lid recycling bins.

What is NO LONGER allowed in your recycling bin

(visit www.redcycle.net.au for drop off locations)

• Polystyrene –Take large pieces to Henderson Waste Recovery Park for compaction and recycling

• Aerosol cans – Take to Administration Centre or Henderson Waste Recovery Park for recycling

• Meat trays – Place in your general waste bin. Consider shopping at butchers that don’t package their meat in plastic or take your own reusable container.

What IS ALLOWED• Aluminium and steel cans• Paper and cardboard

(not shredded)• Hard plastic bottles, tubs

and containers• Glass bottles and jars.

Why the change?

Global markets for recycled materials have reduced sharply following a ban on certain materials being imported into China. This means Perth’s recyclers, including Suez which processes recycling from Cockburn’s yellow-lid bins, can no longer sell some recyclables. Due to this being a very recent change, the City’s 2018/19 Resource Recovery Calendar does not contain this updated information, but our website does.

Be a Good Sort

We are sorry for the confusion this causes.

We can all make a big difference by putting the right things in the right bins.

This will increase recycling rates, as it prevents contaminated recyclables being rejected by potential buyers and sent to landfill.

Please do your bit to help, and #BeAGoodSort

The Hami Hill Community Group members are thrilled about the new hub in their community

New Hub for the HillAn initiative of the Hamilton Hill Community Group, supported by the City of Cockburn, has resulted in a Community Hub in Hamilton Hill on Dixon Reserve.

Already locals have participated in a movie and pizza night and a Saturday afternoon choir is proving very popular.

Upcoming events include hosting barista courses, ceramics, sewing and bike repair workshops and a repair ‘café’ is also in the pipeline.

The Hub is a place where people can find ways of doing things together that raise their awareness of ecological and social sustainability, allows difference to thrive, and helps the community meet future challenges.

It is a place where people can feel welcome and safe, and where their koort djerip (hearts sing) together!

If you would like to get involved or for more info, please check out their website; cockburncommunitygroups.com.au

New website for Cockburn Community Groups

Resident and local community groups can now promote their activities and events on a website the City has created for them.

The new Cockburn Community Groups website allows groups to input their own information, event details and meeting dates so that the community can see what’s coming up in their area. Visit cockburncommunitygroups.com.au

If your group would like to be included on the site, email [email protected]

Fight the bite

Stay bite-free this summer

You might be looking forward to summer, but remember with warmer weather comes pesky mosquitoes.

In Western Australia there are over 200 different species of mosquito, some of which carry disease-causing viruses including Ross River virus. The City of Cockburn

monitors the mosquito population closely and works with the Department of Health to control outbreaks.

Mosquitoes lay their larvae in still or stagnant water, so they are attracted to lakes and our wetlands. While the City treats sumps, soakwells, road drains and

other man-made water bodies to prevent breeding, there are also some simple things that you can do to protect yourself and your home from the pests:

• Cover up with long, loose-fittingclothing

• Use repellent containing DEET(diethyltoluamide) or picaridin

• Empty, remove or cover waterholding containers

• Install insect screens onwindows and doors

• Use mosquito nets andmosquito-proof tents whencamping

• Make sure your pool ischlorinated and the filtrationsystem active

For more information visit: cockburn.wa.gov.au/mosquitomanagement

5 minutes with Cr Carol Reeve-Fowkes

How long have you lived in the City of Cockburn?I’ve lived here 26 years.

What made you decide to become a Councillor?

When we lived in Yangebup, a proposed noxious Waste Treatment Plant was going to be built within a short distance from our homes. My husband Martin and I, along with the Primary School Community and the Yangebup Progress Association worked together and successfully got the proposal rejected; this ultimately protected the local community

from very noxious odours for the last 20 years. This spurred me on into ensuring a balanced approach to planning for our City, so that Industry didn’t negatively impact on residents and recreational areas.

Describe your typical day as a Councillor?

Every day is different, the variety and challenges that each day bring are what I love about the job. We also have the loveliest and most generous community and meeting our people is very rewarding.

What do you love most about the City of Cockburn?

I love our beaches and wetlands, our vibrant multicultural community and I love seeing

several generations of families living here, then raising their own children and their grandchildren in Cockburn too.

Tell us an interesting fact about Cockburn.

Hidden down at Nyerrbup Circle at Woodman Point, there stands a stone Memorial to the Original Township of Clarence, which was established in 1829/30 by the first 459 European settlers in the local vicinity. Also at Woodman Point was the Quarantine Station, completed in 1901 and used specifically for victims of plague and later Soldiers returning from the WW1 with Spanish flu. This whole area is a treasure trove of history and a fascinating glimpse into the past. Well worth visiting!

Yangebup residents keen to see the natural beauty of Yangebup remain

Yangebup Revitalisation Strategy Update The City would like to thank the Yangebup residents and landowners who participated in the three Community Visioning Forums held in June and July 2018.

The feedback from the 180 people who attended the forums has made it clear that residents value the natural beauty of the suburb.

The spacious parks, the retention of trees and good design was important to residents when considering future growth, and should therefore contribute to the existing character of Yangebup.

The City also received valuable information and contributions from the 150 people who completed the online resident survey.

If you would like to read the “Community Visioning Forums Outcomes Report” or the “Community Survey Results” report, visit

comment.cockburn.wa.gov.au/ yangebup-revitalisation

For questions regarding the next stage of the Strategy process, contact us on 08 9411 3444 or for regular updates check the Yangebup project page via the above mentioned link.
