I have learned to understand the way executives think. That means not only understanding the problems they have to solve and how to use data to solve them but also how to communicate the solutions, get the buy-in of a leadership team, and generate lasting impact in an organization.

Listen carefully—the most successful consultants are the ones who can truly understand our clients’ problems and deliver exactly the insights they need.

“While you should always take in the advice of others, it is also important to be confident in your ability to perform at a high level and to portray that same confidence when interacting with a client and your seniors.”

—Kaley Burlingame

“The skills of communication, attention to detail, and problem solving are some of the first things you learn as a consultant and then, with every project you work on, you have the opportunity to further refine them.”

—Rishabh Tandon

“I would advise the student to work hard and try to be involved in many different things within the company, as you will get out what you put in. The work hours may get crazy at times, but you will be rewarded with great experience and enhanced skills as a result of your time put in.”

—Thomas DiGregorio

“There are two things you can do that will help you stand out from your peers: have a basic understanding of the practice you want to join, and be able to articulate why that practice is the right fit for you.”

—David Dallen

“The first thing I learned from being a consultant is to listen first and act second. It is critical that consultants are able to fully listen to the challenges of our clients before building and implementing a solution. By listening first, my team builds trust with our clients and is able to then fully customize a solution that exceeds expectations.”

—Emily Gilbert

“Both my PML and mentor have always challenged me in positive ways and have given me plenty of constructive feedback. Without the PML/Mentor program at KPMG, kick-starting my career and transitioning into the workforce at KPMG wouldn’t have felt as seamless as it did.“

—Sophie Chor
