Your body language shapes who you are

Summary of a TED talk given by Amy Cuddy

(link on the last slide)

People are often interested in other people’s body language

And tend to

neglect their own

your body language affects you too

You can show your

power non

verbally

In the animal kingdom dominance is about

stretching and expanding

Same is the case

with humans

While when the case is opposite

And this is what happens when you put together people with

high and low power

Non verbal

dominance is

relatedto

gender

Men tend to be dominant over women

participation

People who participate more tend to be more

dominant

Our nonverbals govern how other people think and feel about us

but...

Do they govern how we feel about

ourselves

Can you fake it till

you make it

Or rather fake it till

you become it

Physiologically there are differences in two key

hormones between powerful and powerless

people

Testosterone (Dominance hormone)

Cortisol (Stress

hormone)

It is seen that powerful and effective leaders have high testosterone and low cortisol

Power is not just about dominance but also about stress management

It is also seen that power poses can cause a change in these hormones

Let us see an experiment

Volunteers are

asked for a saliva sample

Take a power pose for two

minutes

Gamble

Give another sample

Remember this guy ?
