Young Visual Arts Group 2021 – 2022
Are you deeply passionate about the visual arts? Excited to
create new work, explore new ideas and work collaboratively?
Aged 16-25?
Then our Young Visual Arts Group is for you.
It’s a two-year programme that runs between October and May
each year. The programme’s themes, ideas and outcomes are
shaped by the group each year, with guidance and support
from our staff and lead artist mentor, Jordan McKenzie.
Through the programme, you will receive mentoring and
guidance from visual arts sector leaders, and work towards
putting on an exhibition or event at the Barbican. Working
collaboratively is at the core of the programme, encouraging a
supportive community.
New participants make up half the group, with the other half
continuing from the previous year. You’ll join in October 2021
and will be welcomed into the group by our staff and last year’s
participants. Your second year will then involve you taking more
1
of a lead on shaping the themes and focus of the programme,
ready for when new young creatives join the group.
Young Visual Arts Group aims to include and represent a
diversity of artforms, approaches, and voices. We particularly
encourage applications from people who are from groups
under-represented in the arts sector, and consider applicants’
ethnicity, disability, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds.
If you’d like to discuss any special access requirements you
have for both the application process or the programme itself
please contact us on: [email protected].
You must be a Young Barbican member to participate. Sign up here for free and access discounted tickets to amazing art and entertainment.
Schedule
The sessions will include regular group workshops and
meetings, as well as artist-led activities and exhibition-planning
sessions with Barbican Marketing, Digital, Curatorial and
Production teams.
2
You’re expected to attend all the sessions at the Barbican
Centre, taking place:
Two Wednesday or Thursday evenings per month, 6.30-9pm
One Saturday every 1-2 months, 11am-4pm
The first session will take place on Wednesday 6 October and
all other session dates will be confirmed in due course. Extra
meetings will take place with increased regularity in the lead-up
to the exhibition or event in May 2022.
There’ll be a friendly and relaxed selection session for
shortlisted applicants on Sunday 26 September, 11am-4pm.
We’ll be in touch a week or so before to confirm if you are
invited to attend. If you require any financial support to attend
this selection session, please email
[email protected]. We can cover travel costs
within the M25.
COVID-19 impact
You’ll meet in person at the Barbican Centre or online via Zoom
2-3 times a month from October 2021 to May 2022. We aim to
3
have sessions take place at the Barbican Centre when Public
Health England and Barbican Centre policy allows this and
expect you to be available to attend in person. However, some
sessions might be run online if public health guidance changes.
We will aim to be as flexible as possible, recognising some
participants might have particular COVID-related health or
social reasons for not always being able to attend in person.

Equal Opportunities Monitoring
Barbican Creative Learning is working towards anti-racism and
equity in all aspects of our work. Improving representation
within the arts is a fundamental part of our strategy. This
includes improving how we collect, monitor and evaluate the
demographics of our participants. Additionally, we are funded
by Arts Council England (ACE) as a Band 2 National Portfolio
Organisation (NPO) and are therefore required to contribute to
their understanding of the organisations and artists they fund.
When analysing this data, we will also compare our results with
the Office for National Statistics to better understand how our
demographic data compares with the regions in which we are
working.
Answering these questions is completely optional. The
information you supply to us will be kept secure and will be
used, always anonymously, for monitoring, evaluation and
reporting purposes only. Thank you.
