The first topic was “dealing with garbage”. In this topic, we were taught about landfill and how to deal with some of the useful components of garbage.we were told about two separate dustbins provided by municipalities to collect different types of garbage.usuaone is colored blue used for collecting reusable materials such as plastics, metals and glass. The third topic was “think and then throw garbage”. In this topic, we came across varioutype of questions like “how much of garbage do you think, is thrown out by your house everyday?” “do you keep your surroundings clean?” “do you throw waste in dustbins?”

The last topic was “plastics – boon or a curse”. In this topic we were taught that we should limit the usage of plastics and other non-biodegradable materials. They are very harmful to our nature and create a big problem in garbage disposal. Problems arise wwe use plas

9. Environmental and social impacts of the project

pacts of my project are:- • There is a permanent behavioral change in the students.

The problem of sanitation and pollution has been solved in the school and the neighboring slum area which has helped in maintaining good health and clean and healthy environment.

• Sensitivity towards the environment has developed in the students and other people. As we students are doing this action project, our families and communities are realizing the impact of their action on the environment and are becom

10. Global issues the project relates to. Do we think the project has any effect in addressing this issue?

The global issue that our project relates to is about sanitation and hygiene. It relates the global issue because as we spread garbage and don’t maintain cleanliness in our environment .this global issue is affecting many people not only in one or two countries but lot more than that. When we saw the students of our school littering the school, then we thought that school is our temple and we should maintain cleanliness in our school. That is why we decided to take up this project and first of all we did the survey of sanitation condition of school and the neighborhood area. As per the survey, we planned strategies. According to the strategies, we prepared and then presented charts and skits on sanitation. Then we organized drawing and essay writing competition on the topic “Need for investing} in Sanitation. We also organized cleanliness drive once in a week. Then we presented PPTs on issues related to Sanitation. We provided counseling to the students and created a group on Face book named “Rachana School Sanitation Club” so that we can make students aware about our actions. We also organized a visit of the team members and students of class 5 along with some teachers to the Environmental Sanitation Institute { ESI } [[ SUGHAD]]. We also organized an expert talk in the school by an AMC Official and ESI in charge. All the things that we did as a part of our project effected in addressing this issue. What do you wish you had spent more time on or done differently?

We spent more time on counseling the people of the slum and making them aware about the importance of sanitation and hygiene. When we first went to the slum for having a look and talking to the people of the slum about the sanitation condition of that area, we felt very bad and nervous. The people were hesitating but when we went again to the slum for the survey, we were more confident. The people of the slum were interactive during the survey and told many things about their condition in the slum. We got inspired by them because they were happy though they were living six to seven people in one room with bad sanitation facilities. That is why from that inspiration, we thought we need to do something much important for improvement in that area. That’s why we have sent a requesting mail to an municipal commissioner for making the sanitation facilities in the slum better.

11. Top successes or positive parts of the project The in th gs that we have considered to be our top success are that:-

• There is a permanent behavioral change in the students of our school. • The problem of Sanitation and Pollution has been solved in the school and the

neighboring slum area which has helped in maintaining good health and clean and healthy environment.
