AG6 TOMORROW’S TEACHERS DESIGN, ENGINEER, CONSTRUCTThe aim of this unique programme is to offer those of you who might be considering a career in teaching – either at primary or secondary schoollevel - the opportunity to gainfirst hand experience of what skills are needed to be a teacher.

The programme is based at ag6, with input from our partner primary and high schools along with sessions delivered by Edge Hill University. At the end of the programme, there is the opportunity to spend a day at the Faculty of Education where you will receive an official Edge Hill certificatesummarising your involvement and achievement.

In addition you will have a mock interview, tour of the Edge Hill campus and Education Faculty plus advice on completing UCAS applications.

There will also be the chance to gain general advice and guidance about the various routes into a career in teaching.

As places at Edge Hill are increasingly competitive, taking part in ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’ gives students that extra advantage!

The students will spend time with current Edge Hill trainee teachers so they can experience what it is like to train as a teacher at Alder Grange. Basically, ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’ is about children; how they learn and how we can support them to realise their potential.

We want to give ag6 students the chance to get some experience of these ‘basics’ which include:

• Learning and Teaching: The tools of the trade• The structure of a good lesson plan• Key skills for effective lesson observing• Creating relationships that lead to outstanding Behaviour for Learning• Behaviour for Learning and specific strategies for effective behaviour

Early access to TeacherTraining through:

• 1-to-1 sessions with current Edge Hill trainee teachers• Observation of real classes• Help with UCAS applications• Mock interviews with feedback

Alder Grange will be running a new course from September for Sixth Formers interested in architecture, engineering and construction careers as part of their Enrichment Studies.

Historically, the construction professionals such as Architects, Surveyors and Building Services Engineers, have not had anydedicated pathways that encourageyoung people to explore them as careers.

There is also little opportunity for young people to carry out work experience in these professions at secondary schoollevel and so there is little understandingof these professions.

Design, Engineer, Construct! aims to change this and this course will help students develop their knowledge and skills through the undertaking of a sustainable building project, featuring workshops run under the watchful eye of industry professionals.

Each section focuses on the differentpeople and the range of tasks which come together to design a sustainable building. So students will:

• Develop a deeper understanding of sustainability and sustainable lifestyles

• Demonstrate ways in which their local community can become involved in a construction project

• Understand the range of professionals involved in a construction project

• Understand the planning requirements of an Eco Classroom

• Understand why careful purchasing is critical to the sustainability of a construction project

• Construct their Eco Classroom design in 3D using professional industry standard software

• Compare designs and techniques with other students from different locations around the country and the rest of the world

• Understand the need for long-term sustainable practice in their construction project, their school and their homes.

The course challenges students to work both independently and as a team tomaximise 21st Century technologies.

The Design, Engineer, Construct! qualification is accredited via the Information Technology Qualification (ITQ) framework. This means it is on the Government’s list of approved qualifications.

COURSES AT A GLANCEA-LevelsWe offer a range of A-Level courses. Students usually choose four subjects initially, with students then focussing on their strongest three in Year 13. Some subjects build on studies at GCSE level, others are completely new. If there is a subject you’d like to study that is not listed please speak to us about it, as we may be able to offer it in conjunction with one of our partners.

You should consider combinations of subjects which go well together and would meet your future plans but, more importantly, select subjects you think you will enjoy, as you are far more likely to be successful when you enjoy what you are learning.

Applied CoursesIn addition to A-Level courses, Alder Grange offers a range of Applied Courses, in specialist teaching facilities. These can all be blended with A-Levels or mixed to provide a balanced timetable.

All courses concentrate on the applications of the subject within a genuine work-based environment and are likely to include more work placements than A-Level courses. These are all Level 3 (some can be taken at Level 2 if appropriate).

Enrichment CoursesAlongside A-Levels or Applied Qualifications we will expect all students to take advantage ofa range of Enrichment opportunities. Some of these will lead to additional qualifications and allwill help to ensure students leaving the Alder Grange Sixth Form have a well-roundededucation and are well-prepared for adult life.

Some of the courses are listed below -students will be able to select a numberof these at different times during their timein the Sixth Form.

ENRICHMENT COURSESEnrichment Courses vary each year and are tailored to meet student demand. Please check the website for anup-to-date list of courses.

EXTENDED PROJECT:All ag6 students are encouraged to get involved in our AS ExtendedProject course. This can be on any subject of a student’s interest. It can take any format from a written project to a performance, or piece of artwork and encourages independent learning.

SPORT:Students who wish to take part in either team sports or make use of the Fitness Suite are encouraged to do so and timetabled lessons are provided.

GENERAL STUDIES:This course is designed to broaden students’ post-16 education, complement other studies andenable a deeper understanding of important contemporary issues. It encourages students to think across specialist subjects, engage successfully with issues through the use of stimulating authentic source material, develop their thinking skills, increase their capacity to construct arguments and their ability to draw conclusions. It will also improve their communication and presentation skills.

FRENCH:This enrichment option will enable you to learn more about food and drink, music, sport, education, key celebrations and

more in French-speaking countries. You will develop your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in French. Employers value language skills and enhancing your skills in French will make you more competitive in the national and international job market.

SPORTS LEADER:This course is a nationally recognised leadership award that helps students to develop essential life skills such as organisation, motivation, communication and working with others through sport. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit. Students don’t need to be sports stars – instead an interest in their chosen activity, a positive attitude and a willingness to volunteer are all that is required.

MEDIA STUDIES ENRICHMENTMedia Studies as an enrichment subject focuses on analysing and creating various forms of media including film, television, radio, magazines, newspapers and the internet.

The programme is flexible and allows you to select the most interesting and relevant pathways to further develop your knowledge and understanding of the impact the media has on current society.

The course is practically based with areas of study including creating print-based media examples to feature in the school magazine, participating in discussions about current media issues, writing film reviews which are submitted to the national Film Club and developing a range of media products to promote events and activities taking place at ag6.

YOUNG ENTERPRISE:All students are invited to join this group which involves setting up a business and working with a local business advisor to try and develop a successful business – ideal for any budding Alan Sugars out there!

Throughout the course students will be expected to develop a business idea and use market research skills to establish a place for the product.

They will then take on the total responsibility for the financialplanning of the business by opening and maintaining a company bank account through to marketing and selling the product.

This course will underpin many of the qualities required in other academic courses and would bea great addition for those students who are practical, enjoy working as a team and most of all like a challenge.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH:The Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is available to students in Years 12 & 13. Our aimthroughout this level of the award isto provide a challenge and an opportunity to serve others. It gives students a chance to develop life skills, such as teamwork, on a shared adventure.

Gold level consists of five sections: Physical, Skill, Volunteering, Expeditionand a Residential section where students are required to spend one week undertaking a shared activity with people they do not know.

Expeditions are frequently the high point of the Award, which may be in Britain or abroad. During expeditions groups are expected to be self sufficientwith as little supervision as possible; this builds confidence and teamwork. Current expedition areas include Derbyshire’s Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, North Wales, the Lake District and Scotland.
