Church as God intendedPart 7: Godly Humility

1 Corinthians 4 v 6 - 21

The Problem of Pride:

Pride is ...

•An inappropriate view of our status or abilities

•An over reliance on ourselves

•The opposite of humility

The Problem of Pride:

Humility is ...

•Seeing ourselves as God sees us

•Having a right assessment of who we are

•A respect for God•A respect for others•A healthy self respect

It results in...

The Problem of Pride:

Pride is thinking that we know best

Humility is knowing that God knows best

The Problem of Pride:

The Corinthian church were proud of...

•Their links to certain apostles

•Their wisdom•Their spiritual gifts•Their wordly possessions•Their grasp on grace•Their knowledge of God•Their new Christian status

They thought they were better than everyone else!

The Problem of Pride:

Pride causes division between people

Pride causes us to sin

Pride keeps us from repentance

Pride causes God to oppose us!

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble”

1 Peter 5 v 5

How do we deal with our pride?

1. Acknowledge it

2. Turn away from it (repent)

3. Walk in humble obedience

How do we deal with our pride?

Humble yourself

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble...

... therefore humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand that he may lift you

up in due time.”1 Peter 5 v 5 - 6

Jesus is the best example of godly humility
