Adverbs and adverbials detail more about a verb and sometimes another adverb or adjective. Using the acronym TRaMP will
support learning this area of writing in grammar in the most engaging and memorable way possible.
If you’re unsure of how to use/introduce TRaMP, visit the following links to our YouTube channel:

TRaMP game:
1. Have the character cards, times, verb cards and settings cut out into cards and sort them into piles.
2. Choose a character and verb card. (This creates the subject and verb of our single clause sentence)
Dracula drank blood.
3. Choose a location and put your card and verb card onto it to add an adverbial of place - where the verb took place.
Dracula drank blood in the underground crypt.
4. Choose a time card and add it to create an adverbial of time - when the verb happened.
During the witching hour, Dracula drank blood in the underground crypt.
5. Get creative – now your pupils can create their own adverb of manner -how the blood was drunk- and adverbial of reason -
why the blood was drunk.
During the witching hour, in the dark, underground crypt, Dracula greedily drank blood to cure his insatiable thirst.
You can make the game more challenging by only providing the subject and verb and let the pupils get creative. It is
important that the pupils realise that too many adverbials can spoil a sentence, so they their challenge may be to
edit the sentence for maximum impact. This could be a competition with pupils on each table deciding upon the most
effective sentence.
