Thank you for the huge efforts made to help Enfield on its journey to becoming a cleaner and greener borough by recycling your food waste and maintaining good recycling practices, especially during the Covid-19 lockdown period.

We realise it’s not been easy. With more of us having to remain at home this has meant we have generated more rubbish, recycling and food recycling than normal.

The extra general rubbish collected during lockdown will come to an end on 5 October 2020. We need to reduce the amount of rubbish that we put in our grey lidded bins. To help with this you need to recycle as much as possible. Your efforts will also help us lower our waste carbon footprint.

During lockdown, our crews were collecting black sacks left out with your general rubbish (grey lidded bin) to help clear additional waste during this period. As we are now out of lockdown, this will no longer happen so our crews will stop taking these additional sacks from 5 October 2020.Therefore, we need everyone to go back to: • Putting all their general rubbish in their bin• Reducing the amount of rubbish that you produce• Reducing our waste carbon footprint

    Reducing waste

Here are ways you can reduce the waste in your rubbish bin or sacks• Recycle all food waste in your brown food recycling bin. This bin is

collected weekly. Your silver caddy is only to be used in the kitchen and not left out for collection.

    • Use reusable nappies, as disposable nappies generate a lot of waste. Real nappies can help you reduce your waste and save money. We encourage reusable nappies to parents with a baby under eighteen months, or parents-to-be, living in the borough with a £54.15 voucher at www.realnappiesforlondon.org.uk

    • Your bins should not be used for DIY/ large household items. These can be taken to Barrowell Green Reuse and Recycling Centre, Winchmore Hill N21 3AU

    • Reduce single-use plastic, by

    - using reusable water bottles

    - using paper or metal drinking straws and cutlery

    - buying groceries and other products with less or no plastic packaging

    - shopping with reusable bags instead of buying new plastic bags

    - carrying a reusable coffee cup (to use where permissible)

Many other items can be recycled in your local area such as textiles and batteries - check out your local collection points and charitable organisations. www.recyclenow.com/local-recycling

You can reduce the food waste you produce and save money by following some simple tips:

Plan your food shop, check what you already have

Write a shopping list and stick to it Check your storage methods to help food

last longer e.g fridge temperature, store vegetables in a cool dark place

Make a new meal with leftovers - soups, curries and stir-fries can all be made with leftover veggies, meat and fish

Freeze food - bread, cheese, milk and berries can all be frozen

Waste and recycling collections Bins should be placed out for collection by 6:30am on your scheduled collection day on the boundary edge of your property.

If your bins are not emptied on your collection day, you can report this after 4pm online at www.enfield.gov.uk; this must be done within 24 hours.

The reasons why your bin may not be emptied include:• It contained incorrect items• It was not out for collection• It was too heavy• Our vehicles could not access your road

If you place incorrect items in your bins, this causes problems at our sorting facility. Please take care to recycle correctly.

Extra recycling will be collected as well as flattened cardboard. This can be placed neatly alongside your recycling bin on your scheduled collection day. Larger cardboard boxes should be broken down into more manageable pieces.

Extra general rubbish and sacks of general waste will not be taken.

Please check your collection day online at www.enfield.gov.uk/bins

If you find you have extra waste, the Council can collect this for a fee; more information can be found at www.enfield.gov.uk/bulkywaste
