Dear Friends,

Thank you for taking a moment to let us share with you how truly amazing you are! In spite of an often difficult and challenging medical landscape, UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital and the Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association are doing well, thanks in part to your generous support.

• Inside this report, you will read about how far we have come in raising funds in support of the Pediatric Rehabilitation Growth and Expansion project. (Hint, we are ready to begin construction!)

• Inside this report, you will read about community partners who make quality health care their personal mission.

• Inside this report, we will share what is on the horizon for comprehensive cancer care.

• Inside this report, we will share with you a way you can continue to support your Foundation’s mission in 2020 and have fun at the same time!

No one said our work would be easy, but it sure is exciting. These pages are full of enthusiasm and success stories, which would not be possible without our amazing donors, volunteers, dedicated boards, community partners and talented team members.

We are grateful and honored you have come along on this wonderful journey with us.

Thank you.

In August of 2019, UnityPoint Health – Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) completed their relocation to 660 Iowa Street in Dubuque. The move was critical for the VNA to transform to meet the changing needs of our community, while allowing the VNA to improve and remain viable. The new location is ADA accessible and compliant, provides additional clinic rooms, enhanced patient privacy, dedicated well-lit parking and is serviced on a bus route for the city and county.

“While the process in selecting just the right location was long, our clients and staff could not be more pleased,” said Stacey Killian, Director of the VNA. “We know none of this is a reality without the support and belief in our mission by many donors. This facility will enable us to serve our community public health needs in a true clinical setting our clients deserve.”

The new facility has given the VNA an opportunity to provide more than 23,000 services to patients in need, including 9,000 hours of direct clinical care. The VNA continues to provide services both in the home and in the community accounting for 15,000 hours of combined care coordination and home visits.

The VNA looks forward to an exciting year ahead, growing and adapting as the delivery of health care continues to change.

Janet shared, “I wasn’t able to become a nurse, but I do volunteer at the hospital and find it very rewarding.”

Janet has nurtured and supported future generations of nurses with her daughter, granddaughter and daughter-in-law all choosing to become nurses.

“I feel every person should have the opportunity to follow their dreams in the nursing field. I hope I’m helping a student by giving to the scholarship program, so they can reach their goals,” Janet added.

The Judi Butler Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was recently established by Jim Butler, in memory of his late wife, to fund the Judi Butler Memorial Scholarship and support a Finley Hospital team member pursuing a higher level of education.

“My wife and I spent about 30 very intense days and nights at Finley Hospital when she was struggling and then lost her battle with cancer two and a half years ago,” Jim shared.

During their experience, Jim, Judi and their daughters became very familiar with many Finley departments, including the Wendt Regional Cancer Center, ICU, ER, 4th and 5th floor inpatient units and acute rehabilitation. They met dozens of caring, confident team members during that time.

Jim shared, “When I retired after teaching high school English for 34 years, I always thought teachers were underpaid and over worked; but after our experiences at Finley, I gained a new appreciation for nurses and others who come in direct contact with patients. They are amazing individuals.”

After Judi’s death, Jim wanted to do something in memory of her and began volunteering at Finley.

“That has been very rewarding, but it was not enough. That was when I decided to give a scholarship in Judi’s name. What better way to

memorialize Judi and also help the nurses who had so impressed me. After meeting the first recipient of Judi’s scholarship last spring, I felt as if I had done the right thing in creating this scholarship; she was exactly the kind of person I had in mind. I hope that receiving this award lets her know how valuable she is and how much she is appreciated.”

Jim continued, “I hope it makes her further attempts to improve her skills less complicated so she can stay in the nursing field and continue to help people like Judi and me.”

Through endowed gifts, the Finley Health Foundation, along with the Finley Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association annually award scholarships to hardworking and dedicated team members, along with college and high school students pursuing a nursing degree in higher education. Collectively, the organizations award nearly $20,000 annually to area students, awarding nearly $200,000 in the last 12 years.

Volunteers Who Support the Future of Nursing

“The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head…”

William Osler

Ever since the world has referred to medicine as a “practice,” education has been at the forefront in improving the health of humans.

The Finley Health Foundation was a recipient of two newly established scholarships to support the educational efforts of future and current nurses in the Tri-State community.

The first scholarship was established by Janet and Courtney Vance, longtime volunteers at the hospital. Janet’s story begins when she was young. She wanted to become a nurse herself, but circumstances led her to pursue other interests and raise a family.

In 2019, more than 300 volunteers provided 32,124 hours of service to make a difference in the lives of others at UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital.

Volunteers serve the hospital in many assignments, but the difference they make for patients, families and team members goes beyond the actual service itself. It’s that extra personal touch that reassures patients and families they are in good hands by providing a feeling of comfort and support that makes them so amazing.

Throughout Finley, our volunteers provide warm smiles, laughter and a listening ear while providing services such as wayfinding, spiritual care, newspaper deliveries, Senior Health Insurance Information (SHIIP), pet therapy and the Sunshine Gift Shop.

Our volunteer team brightens the day for our patients, families and care teams.

Ready, Set, Grow! Finley Hospital’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Growth and Expansion Project is now well under way, as this spring, construction crews will begin to transform an existing UnityPoint Health building on Westmark Drive into a new home for our pediatric therapists and their young patients.

On March 9, children served by the program gathered with donors, therapists and board members for a Ready, Set, Demo celebration, kicking off the start of the renovation. Moving into the new facility will allow the program to grow from 1,400 square feet to more than 6,200 square feet dedicated to pediatric therapy and treatment space.

The expansion will allow for:

• Safe and ADA compliant parking area and entrance

• Program services to be consolidated onto one floor

• Bright, welcoming and inclusive waiting area

• Four treatment rooms for occupational therapy, physical therapy and serial casting

• Two speech therapy rooms

• Feeding and nutrition therapy room with kitchenette for safe food handling

• Treadmill room to increase strength and endurance

• Large family restroom equipped for all ages and abilities

• A play area featuring playground-style equipment, such as a stair system, jumping pads, zip line, swing and a climbing wall to allow kids to learn and participate in play activities to improve their balance and strength.

• The gym area will be a large and open space featuring a larger swing system, large floor mats for therapy ball and other balancing activities, open space for gait training, scooterboard tasks, tricycles, and other activities for older, more advanced children to build their endurance.

The expansion will allow the program to be more inclusive to meet the growing number and needs of our youngest patients and assist therapists in providing the best outcome for every patient, every time. Construction is scheduled to conclude this Fall.

Thank you to our many donors for supporting this important project! There is still time to make an impact. To learn more or to support this project, contact the Finley Health Foundation at (563) 589-2358 or visit: unitypoint.org/givetokids.

The Wendt Regional Cancer Center has been leading cancer care of the Tri-States for more than 30 years.

While technology has advanced and changed, one thing has remained the same at the Wendt Center – their comprehensive approach to caring for their cancer patients.

In 2019, the Wendt Center was awarded a three-year accreditation by the American College of Radiology in radiation oncology, making the facility the only accredited cancer center in Dubuque. This accreditation serves as a symbol of the high quality and safety standards the Wendt Center continuously achieves and maintains.

“The Wendt Center team is focused on meeting all quality standards and ensuring every patient has a positive experience when going through something as trying as cancer,” says Mike Kelly, Manager of Finley’s Wendt Center. “We continue to introduce technologies and services that improve the fight against cancer. But more importantly, everyone who receives treatment at the Wendt Center becomes part of the Wendt Center family – their experience is what matters most.”

The Wendt Center excels at providing patients radiation therapy, which can range from standard therapy to specialty radiation therapy. The Wendt Center continues to raise the standard of radiation therapy available in our region with two state-of-the-art linear accelerators, radiation simulators and computerized 3-D treatment planning, including Intensity Modulated Radiation

Therapy (I.M.R.T), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (S.B.R.T), and RapidArc Therapy.

Lifesaving radiation treatments may lead to side effects that can impact a person’s daily life. One way to manage or assist with those deficits is through Finley’s Oncology Rehabilitation program. At UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital, four therapists are uniquely equipped to help cancer patients recover function and improve quality of life, while undergoing or after completing cancer treatment. Specifically-trained therapists also provide speech therapy and lymphedema therapy to patients.

The Wendt Center is proud to offer preventative screenings, such as lung screenings, to patients with high risk factors. With lung cancer being the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, this important service can provide patients with early detection of lung cancer. The screening is a rapid, non-invasive test using low-dose x-rays to provide detailed, three-dimensional images of the lungs. The patient then meets with Finley’s nurse navigator to assess their individual risk for lung cancer, based on their history and risk factors.

Genetic counseling is available at the Wendt Center and enables patients to gain a better understanding of their risk for developing cancer. During a genetic counseling session, patients meet with a trained genetic counselor to help better understand their inherited cancer risk. Based on the patient’s family history, they will receive education about reducing risks for cancer and information regarding genetic testing.

No cancer patient should have to go through their treatment journey alone, which is why the Wendt Center offers a nurse navigator service to patients, free of charge. Nurse navigator, Laura Duerr, RN, BSN, provides individualized assistance to patients, families and caregivers by assisting them through the complex system of healthcare, so the patient and their families can focus on their care and needs. Laura is a consistent point of contact throughout a patient’s diagnosis, treatment and onto survivorship.

“I consider it an honor and privilege to be able to come alongside of patients and families during this trying, challenging time,” Laura said. “Patients and families continue to teach me that life and relationships are precious gifts to be cherished. I will do my best for each patient and family that I’m entrusted with.”

Through the generous support of donors, the Wendt Center staff is able to equip cancer patients with what they need throughout their treatment journey. From specialty bras for breast cancer patients to blankets, pillows and head coverings, the options provide significant support to cancer patients while being treated at the Wendt Center.

The John and Mabel Heinen Family Endowment was started in 2000, when the Finley Health Foundation received a generous gift to establish an endowment fund to assist patients who experience financial hardship while battling cancer. Because of the Heinen Family Endowment,

the nurse navigator is able to provide patient assistance with: gas and groceries, tube feeding, oral nutritional drinks, prescription medication, medication boxes, wound bandages/ointments, hygiene items, utility bills, rent, mortgage payments, property insurance, property tax, car insurance and patient education materials.

“To be able to provide another level of assistance to cancer patients in a time of need is so valuable,” Laura said. “None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the generosity of John and Mabel Heinen. They were true visionaries, and I believe they would be very pleased with how many cancer patients they have helped over the years.”

With a variety of comprehensive services offered to patients, the Wendt Center has the tools and staff to guide patients toward their road of survivorship. From programs made possible by generous donors to the high quality and accredited radiation therapy services, the Wendt Center provides patients with the support they need throughout different stages of their treatment journey. At the Wendt Center, each and every patient is more than a diagnosis. They are a person who matters to this world and through every consultation and therapy appointment, we strive to show them just how much.

A COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER

Close to Home“Everyone who receives treatment at the Wendt Center becomes part of the Wendt Center family – their experience is what matters most.”

Mike Kelly, Manager of Finley’s Wendt Center.

For Dubuque natives, Scott and Juli Harris, family naturally weaves itself into every aspect of their lives. With four children and two grandchildren, both Scott and Juli enjoy staying involved with their children’s schools, activities and sports, in addition to their family, church and community.

“With three of our children under the age of 18, we certainly stay busy,” says Juli.

Home isn’t the only place where family plays an important role for Scott and Juli. Harris Golf Cars, one of Dubuque’s family-owned businesses, began in part by Scott’s father in 1979. The business has grown into a multi-state operation thanks to the integral role family values played in starting the business more than 40 years ago.

However, it’s their involvement with UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital that has shown Scott and Juli just how much a strong family circle can make a positive impact on a community.

For the past 22 years, Juli has worked at Finley Hospital in a variety of roles. After a decade of serving patients as a bedside nurse in Finley’s Intensive Care unit, Juli served several years in Finley’s education department and led several departments within the hospital including 4 Medical/Surgical and the Acute Rehab Unit. She now serves as the hospital’s Regional Director of Care Management, working heavily with case management, social work and the hospitalist program.

“I am so proud to work here,” shares Juli, “At Finley, you’re among people who know and care about you. We form a strong circle of support around each of our patients to facilitate success at the next level of care.”

For Scott, serving on the Finley Health Foundation board for the last six years, and currently serving as Board Chair, has shown him first-hand the impact of donor dollars and how the Foundation stewards those gifts. Donors who make an investment in Finley Hospital and the Finley Health Foundation play a pivotal role in the health and well-being of the Tri-State community. The support from donors on two recent projects made a personal impact on Scott.

“I was most excited to have been a part of Finley’s Grandview Expansion Project,” shares Scott, reflecting on the multi-million-dollar fundraising project that brought exciting improvements to Finley’s Heart and Vascular Center, including a new Cardiac Catheterization Lab, as well as a new Emergency Department and Babka Surgery Center for Dubuque.

COMMITED TO COMMUNITY

Scott and Juli Harris

“Everyone needs that comprehensive circle of support Finley is able to provide.”

Scott and Juli Harris

Additionally, construction will soon begin on Finley’s Pediatric Therapy Center.

“Finley’s pediatric rehab clinic is in the process of significant expansion, in order to meet the needs of our growing communities,” adds Scott.

That expansion includes a move from Westmark Outpatient Therapy to a building on Westmark Drive and will give therapists more than 6,200 square feet of pediatric therapy and treatment space to meet the needs of Finley’s youngest patients.

“Finley is incredibly progressive and plans to stay that way,” shares Juli. “We’re innovative with solutions on how to best care for our patients. We work hard to not only take care of our community, but to also educate our community members.”

Scott and Juli’s dedication to Finley Hospital is amplified by their financial support.

“A different kind of reality check happens when suddenly it’s your own family on the receiving end of care. We want to be sure that our family and friends have a place to receive expert care and a variety of services in our community,” shares Juli regarding why she and her family have decided to donate over the years.

Juli’s involvement in Finley’s iCare Employee Giving Campaign, coupled with their decision as a family to donate an annual gift to Finley, continues to make an impact on the organization and the community members it serves.

“Being a part of the solution by financially supporting these efforts is one way to ensure we continue the services we have and grow to offer new services,” adds Juli.

Scott and Juli agree, “Everyone needs that comprehensive circle of support Finley is able to provide. A place where we can meet our community members where they’re at, and truly help them live their best lives.”

For Jeff and Janet Mozena, their family histories largely influenced their decision to include UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital in their estate plans and become members of the Finley Health Foundation’s Legacy Society, in addition to their annual giving of time, talent and treasure.

“I think both of our families were always volunteering and supporting good causes,” explains Janet, who continues the philanthropic efforts instilled in her by her parents.

Additionally, growing up with two brothers who had polio, health was always key to Janet’s family. With Janet’s giving nature and interest in health, it’s only natural that supporting Finley Hospital has been woven into the story of her life.

Jeff echoes Janet’s comments and recalls his experiences with Finley dating back to his grandparents who received care in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, and the care his sister received before passing away in 1982.

“At that time, the hospital became a very important part of our commitment - to make sure healthcare is provided to the community,” Jeff stated.

Jeff’s formal involvement with Finley began by serving on both the Finley Health Foundation and Finley Hospital Board of Directors for a period of 14 years. During that time, the hospital board was introduced to Eddie Thompson & Associates, a partner of the Finley Health Foundation who specializes in values-based estate planning. As Jeff eventually considered their end-of-life-giving plans, it only made sense to share with the hospital.

“Good quality, local healthcare was available to our family when it was needed and it’s a responsibility to make it available to others,” says Jeff. “It’s our legacy gift to the community.”

Jeff and Janet agree including Finley in their estate plans is not only the right thing to do, but is also important to the ongoing support for the hospital. Whether it’s through their legacy gift or annual giving of time, talent and treasure, both continue to support the hospital.

As President and CEO of Premier Bank, Jeff sees healthcare as an important part of the resources available to employees and finds an annual commitment crucial. After Janet’s retirement as a secondary education teacher, she has shared her time and talent with Finley’s Sunshine Circle, whose gift shop operations support patient care needs and other major hospital projects. As a leader in the volunteer-led organization, Janet helps manage schedules and volunteer hours, contributes items for fundraisers, greets patients and visitors in the gift shop and more.

While Jeff and Janet reflect on their past experiences with Finley Hospital that led them to their legacy gift, it’s their leadership and commitment today that will impact Finley Hospital and the Dubuque community in the future.

When thinking about the importance and access to quality, local healthcare, Janet concludes, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything, really.”
