You will practice yoga at its intendedheight, in the country of Buddha’sbirth, enmeshed within the naturalbeauty of a forest mountain terrain.In this unique village immersion, youwill experience the richness of ruralNepal as the guests of local villagers.Through the altruistic heart of yogawe will offer the gift of the hope,support and education for children inremote areas.

We will visit some of the most scenic locations of this rich and majestic center of spirituality andyoga. This is a opportunity to takeyour practice out into the worldwhile living your yoga at the altitudes where the gods and goddesses of the yogic pantheon still abide. 

Trip Details & Itinerary: Cost: $2800 per person - includesporter fees, all lodging, transportation,yoga/meditation and at least one totwo meals per day.Does not includeair fair (approximately $1200- $1400).

Getting There & BackParticipants must arrive in Kathmandu by April 15 thereforemust arrange to leave the U.S. byApril 13. Individuals will meet up withthe group and be escorted to lodgingand accommodations (Day 1 in itinerary). The first full day April 16will be spent in Kathmandu (Day 2 initinerary). First trek begins on April17 (Day 3 in itinerary). Last day ofjourney is April 27 (Day 13 in itinerary)

Day 1: Kathmandu ArrivalKathmandu can bring about cultureshock. You will be captured by thecity’s mystical thrall of temples,music, buzzing traffic and shopping.Upon arrival, you will be picked up atthe airport and taken to the hotel atThamel, Kathmandu.

Within walking distance of the hotel, is Hanuman Dhoka Durbar a vast series of temples which stretchesover 5 acres where you can buy nec-essary gear and supplies. Everythingfor your journey is available fromsleeping bags to granola bars includingschool supply items for purchase topass along to the village children. Aftershopping we will meet for a traditionaldelicious Thakali Khana Nepali dinner.Dinner and hotel accommodations are included in the package.

Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing We will meet for breakfast at 7am.After, we will spend the day exploringand encountering the people, cultureand temples of Kathmandu. We willexplore Hindu and Buddhist sacredarchitecture dating back to as earlyas the 5th century, as well as becomeacquainted with the magnificent godsand goddess of South Asian culture.We will visit the Boudhanath Stupaafter breakfast. First built in 600 AD;it is a powerful Tantric pilgrimage sitethat will give some insight about themerger of Hindu and Buddhist cultureand religion. The Stupa is said to bethe embodiment of the Buddha and is believed to fulfill earnest wishes tomany. Retreatants will also have the opportunity to participate in atraditional cleansing Tibetan smokeoffering ceremony at the Stupa.

We will then visit Pashupatinath, the Temple of Shiva, the god of Yoga.There we will visit the Ghats andpractice yoga with the babas andyogis in the courtyards surroundingthe temple.

Our last stop will be Bhaktapur for anopportunity to witness the Newariculture and their way of living. It is afascinating place to visit and we will enjoy some of the local cuisine.

Your breakfast, dinner and hotel accommodations are included in thepackage, but not lunch, snacks,drinks and museum fees.

Day 3: Kathmandu to Jalbire toChandibhanjang | 4-5 Hour TrekWe will meet for breakfast at 6am.After breakfast we will head to Jalbire along the Trishule River. It isabout 100km south from Kathmanduand takes about 3 hrs by bus. Youwill witness breathtaking sceneryright after we depart Kathmandu.The mountainous landscapes in themiddle part of Nepal are home tomany different villages with differentfaces. Once we arrive in Jalbire, wewill stretch our legs, enjoy a lightlunch and start our first day oftrekking. By the end of the day wewill arrive at Chandibhanjang. We willdine there that night and spend thenight in this hilly village among localpeople in mud houses. All three meals,bus travel and lodging are included,snacks and drinks are not included.

Day 4: Chandibhanjang to Gadi2150m | 6-7 Hour TrekWe will convene for yoga at 6am and then meet at 7am for breakfast.We will then tour a local secondaryschool, and around 9am we will startour day long trek to Gadi. Along theway we will encounter some nativepeople, beautiful hills, and maybesome exotic birds and monkeys.After 3 or 4 hrs walk we will stop byat village to eat our lunch, locallyprepared. We will catch a breath andhead to our final destination Gadi(2150m). Once we arrive at Gadi,

we may have an opportunity to see acultural program. We will eat our DalBhaat and Tarakari, a local dinner,and finish the day. All three mealsand local lodging are included.

Day 5: Gadi to Chitwan National Park | 4-5 Hour TrekWe will meet for yoga again at 6ambreakfast at 7am and then visit alocal elementary school in the morning. Then we will head down the last hill of Chitwan to reachShaktikhor by midday. We will walkalong a stream, passing through aParza settlement. After four hours,we will take a break at Shaktikhorand eat our Parza style lunch. Shaktikhor is at the very southernpart of Nepal. This region borders toNorthern India, so we will begin tosee Tharu and Indian settlementshere. Our final destination for theday is Shauraha or Chitwan NationalPark. We will take a bus from Shaktikhor to Shauraha and spendthe night at Chitwan National Park.Here you will find some westernstyle restaurants and pubs, and youwill be on your own for dinner.Choose the meal that you like andjust relax. Breakfast, lunch and guesthouse lodging included. 

Day 6: Day In Chitwan National ParkThe highlight of Day 6 is a two hourelephant ride through the jungle andcultural dance program at the eveningby local people. Meals will be provided.

Day 7: Chitwan to Pokhara to Tikhe Dhunga | 6 Hour Bus RidePlus 3 Hour TrekWe meet at 6am for yoga and have breakfast at 7am. After thebreakfast we will catch a bus to

Pokhara. It is one of the most beautiful places in Nepal where manytrekking routes begin. On a clear day,one can see the entire western Himalaya range from here. We willsee some beautiful landscapes of thewestern part of Nepal during our busride. We will stop for lunch and thenarrive at Pokhara by the mid day. Wewill start our trek from Naya Pul(New bridge), and trek to Tikhe Dhunga(1495m/4905ft) It will be a goodwalk after a long bus ride. All threemeals, bus travel and lodging included, but not snacks and drinks.

Day 8: Tirkhe Dhunga to Ghorepani2850m | 5-6 Hour TrekOn day 8, we will practice yoga andmeditation in the morning and thenenjoy a more leisurely walk throughrhododendron and oak forests andacross streams before making ashort, final climb to Nangethanti. We will see some old Magar and Gurung settlements along the way.From Nangethanti we head up toGhorepani (2850m), it is a pleasantwalk. Weather is perfect during thistime of the year. All three meals andlocal lodging included.

Day 9: Ghorepani to Poon Hill to Tadapani | 2520mAn early start and an hour hiking toPoon Hill (3195m) leads us to a brilliant spectacle: the vantage pointprovides an unobstructed view ofsunrise over the high Himalayas.After spending about an hour practicing meditation on the hillside,we come back to Ghorepani, have ahot breakfast, and start walking toTadapani. From Ghorepani the trailclimbs along ridges and through pineand rhododendron forests to Deurali(2960m). We descend to reach Banthanti, before winding our way toTadapani (2540m). All three mealsand local lodging are included. 

Day 10: Tadapani to GhandrukWe practice morning yoga at 6amand will take a journey on a downhilldescent and observing a cornucopiaof breath-taking views of the Annapurna Mountain. We will thentake a somewhat-steep drop atKimche (1630m) where we will restfor a moment before pressing on toChane. Next, we walk along a flag-filled path which slides throughthe Gurung-inhabited village ofGhandrung. We will visit the Annapurna conservation office andmuseum, as well as take time to explore the village. 

Day 11: Ghandruk to PokharaOur last day of trekking takes usthrough the village of Pothana(2110m) before reaching Nayapul(950m). On arrival in Nayapul, midDay, our bus meets us before drivingto Pokhara where our trek ends. Wewill spend the night in Pokhara amodern well populated city. We willbe on our own for dinner this night

which will give us an opportunity totake a small break from the groupand enjoy a little quiet time. Thismarks the end of our trek. We willhead to Kathmandu the followingmorning. Breakfast, lunch and bustravel included.

Day 12: A Day In PokharaMorning yoga. The rest of this day isyours to explore this majestic city.

Day 13: Pokhara to KathmanduWe will meet one last time formorning yoga at 7am and then havebreakfast. Afterwards we will catcha bus from Pokhara to Ktm. The laststop for today will be Patan DurbarSquare. Here we visit a museumthat will offer insight into how people lived in Kathmandu in thepast. We will end our day with dinner in Patan. You will be on yourown from this point; you can chooseto hang out in Kathmandu for a fewmore days or fly back home.

Note: Yoga Ascent Nepal is a rigoroustrekking experience through remotelocations in rural areas. The trek willinclude walking for at least 5 hours aday up and down moderate to difficultterrain. All applicants must be in goodphysical health and should be able torun a 5k before considering this retreat.

John Allen Gibel was first introduced to the marvelousfeats of Indian Yogis by readingabout them in the Time LifeMysteries of the Unknownbook series when he was 10

years old. Since that time he has formally studiedtraditional styles of Hatha Yoga and postural yogain several lineages, focusing primarily on the Ash-tanga Vinyasa tradition. John Allen has studied di-verse lineages of Yoga practice as well asBuddhist meditation techniques during retreat inthe Himalayas with the renown meditation mas-ter Yogi Acharya Lama Gursam. It is through thekindness of his teachers Lamchen Gyalpo Rin-poche, Chenga Rinpoche, Ani K.D. Palmo, DruponThinley Ningpo, Manju Jois, and Kino MacGregorthat he has had the honor to share these Yogasystems. Following the direct inspiration of histeachers he also leads small group yoga retreatsand contemplative meditation workshops inwilderness based settings, for it is within theseconditions that deeply transformative realizationis most likely to occur.

Annie Okerlin, founder of Yogani Studios and the Exalted Warrior Foundation,began practicing yoga in1996.  Intent on deepeningher practice, Annie attended

Bikram Yoga Training in 1999 and within threeweeks she knew teaching yoga was her life’spassion.  Yogani Studios opened in 1999 as asmall one room studio.  Since that time, Annie’senergy and compassion have led her to expandYogani into a thriving community for yogis andyoga teachers in Tampa.

In 2005, Annie founded the Exalted WarriorFoundation and began a new path of workingwith wounded veterans.  Through EWF, Annieteaches yoga to wounded populations through-out military and Veterans hospitals.  Annie andEWF support nationwide programs assisting there-integration of the wounded back into civilianlife, and have begun documenting best-practicesto present in teacher training programs.

Rupendra Karmacharya Bornand raised in Chitwan province,Nepal, is an ecologist and explorer, and is an officialwithin the Nepal BirdwatchSociety. He is a major figure in

the eco-tourism movement in Nepal. Rupendra isan expert in the local tribal culture of Nepal’s coun-tryside. He is also the president of Books4Nepal, anon-profit organization which provides educationssupplies and lunch for schools in remote hillsides ofChitwan.
