YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program—coming fall of 2014! This program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of de-veloping type 2 diabetes. You do not have to do it alone! Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives. The pro-gram is led by a trained Lifestyle coach and is a one-year program. The goal of the program is to reduce body weight by 7% and increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week.

LiveSTRONGThe YMCA of Greater Nashua, through a partner-ship with LiveStrong, is strengthening our com-munity by supporting and improving the health of cancer survivors in our area. Through a free 12-week program in a caring, safe environment, we will help you reclaim your health and well-being. In small supportive groups with other survivors, you will increase your strength and energy, while working at your own pace. The Y would like to help you be “you” again. Join us!

Prescribe The YIn 2008, the YMCA of Greater Nashua partnered with local physicians to support adolescents with healthy lifestyle behaviors. Together we developed a referral system for doctors to Prescribe children in the 85th percentile using the “Prescription for a Healthier You” referral form. This free 12 week program meets twice a week for one hour. Our expert staff delivers a quality education and as-sists families by developing strategies to make healthy choices part of their daily routine. Our personal training staff provides children with a caring, noncompetitive environment where they can experience the fun of physical activity while developing team-building skills. Our registered dietician will simplify healthy eating and help children explore options that are as appealing as they are nutritious. Children and families actively work each week to discover their path to health through balance and teamwork. For more information on any of these programs please contact Maegan Sullivan, Director of Healthy Living [email protected] or 603-689-2657

Gym & Swim (18-36 months OR 3-5 years)A great way to introduce your child to the gym and pool. After 30 minutes of structured games and activities using balls, parachute play and more, we’ll head to the pool for a structured swim lesson. Parent participation is required for the gym and swim portions of the 18-36 month class. Time is allotted between the gym and the swim to change for the pool.

Flips & Flippers (ages 3-5)Your child will be introduced to basic tumbling on land followed by a structured swim lesson in the pool. Each portion is 30 minutes long with time allotted between tumbling and swimming to change for the pool. Do some flips then splash into the pool to use your flippers!

Homeschool Swim Lessons (ages 6-13)A 45 minute structured lesson including Y swim components of stroke development, personal growth, safety, water sports, games and rescue skills. Class is followed with 20 minutes of free swim with water slide access.

Youth Water Exercise (ages 6-13) Get fit through creative movement, games and activities in the water. Get your 45 minutes of daily fitness through water sports, games and wacky relays. Participants should be comfortable swimming with floatation and treading water without the support of an instructor.

Adaptive Swim Lessons (ages 5-10)Adaptive lessons at the Y are designed with you in mind. Instructors will use the curriculum of the YMCA of the USA swim program with a modified approach to foster the learning process for your child. We use a combination of verbal, visual and hands on instruction to best serve each child’s learning style. While this class is specifically designed for children with cognitive special needs, traditional group and private lessons are also great options. Contact our Aquatics Coordinators to find the best match for your family!

Private Swim Lessons (ages 4+)Private swim lessons for youth and adult offer the one on one attention to tackle individual goals and objectives. Private lessons follow the same session dates and registration procedures as regular group lessons. Simply select from one the available days/times through our online registration system to book your lesson. You can also coordinate group lessons of up to three participants with your family or friends. All private lessons are taught by our experienced group swim lesson instructors. Professional aquatics staff may be requested at an additional

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTSwim Lessons (Parent/Child, Preschool & Youth)PARENT/CHILDParent & child classes are designed for water acclimation. Our objective is to support families with a foundation of swim skills at an early age. Basic skills are introduced (kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, etc.) as well as water safety education and tips. Age appropriate songs and games are utilized to promote fun while reinforcing fundamentals. A minimum of one guardian per child must be in the water. Swim diapers are required.

PRESCHOOL/YOUTH Students are divided by age, Preschool (3-5) and Youth (6+ years). This allows age and developmentally appropriate learning. A child aging up within the first 2 weeks of a session may be granted approval to register for the next age bracket, but otherwise we follow the age guidelines firmly.

The Y swim lesson program is not about checking off a skill, it’s about mastering a skill. This means a swimmer can demonstrate the skill with proper form repeatedly. A skill may be mastered in the technical sense, but endurance is also a factor. A student must demonstrate the proper form for the required distance. It’s important to know that a child may spend several sessions in the same level before progression occurs. Every child will progress at a different rate.

We use IFDs. IFD (instructional floatation device) include bubbles, barbells, noodles, kickboards, etc. IFDs are used as a tool to encourage proper form or body position and build endurance. IFDs also allow the instructor to swim safely with more than one child at a time. The Y provides IFDs for class use.

PARENT TIPS• TRANSFER FEE: Children registered for the

wrong level will be asked to transfer. Space is limited so please register for the correct class. There is a $10 transfer fee for children registered in the wrong level.

Our coaching staff is dedicated to providing a fun but challenging place for swimmers to experience the wonderful sport of swimming.
