Recently, an old friend of mine got married to his dream girl.If I were to tell you how long Ive known him, you would be able to guess my age (HAHA!) so Im just going totell you that Ive known him for more than 15 years now.

I attended his wedding banquet, along with a couple of other friends, also from our schooling years. And it wasa great occasion. Of course the union of the bride and groom is a celebration in itself, but I also celebrated thereunion of school mates. The groom is today a successful business owner in the engineering and constructionbusiness, one of us is a now a doctor living in Australia, and the other a talented fashion designer/stylist/guru.

It made me realize how far weve come. As we caught up over dinner, we made a boisterous bunch. Almostignoring the other people sharing the same table, we whispered our secrets (just like how we were back inschool!), we laughed like teenagers loud and uninhibited, and we took lots and lots of pictures. We evenwanted to take the stage at the wedding to sing our school song, fancy that!

As Im looking at the pictures now, despite our glamorous evening dresses and well-tailored suits, I can still seeus in our white and blue school uniform, smiling cheekily at the camera! I guess one will always cherish theirschooling years huh?

Well, its half a year gone by now. Those who are taking their SPM this year, in less than 6 months, you willbe leaving school. I guess what Im trying to say is that everyone should make the most of their schoolingyears be it having good grades, being active in sports and other activities, making friends and keeping thatrelationship going for years to come.

Enough of my nostalgia though because this issue is once again packed with some amazing stu! Some ofyou have probably devoured our exclusive feature story on Justin Bieber (pg 6)even before you read anythingelse!

sprouted from a mother and sons passion for

good food.

Six years after introducing its simple yet

hearty menu and its now familiar sea of blue

on pristine white signature decor and several

concept restaurants later, The Delicious Group

is thrilled to introduce the very rst issue of its

own in-house magazine - Delicious Times.

Benjamin Yong, CEO and co-founder, shared

that the inspiration behind Delicious Times

came through observing how existing

publications successfully reach out to and

eectively build a connection with specic

target readers. Delicious Times aims to

emulate this success and further expand the

Groups relationship with its loyal base of

customers.

In conjunction with the launch of Delicious

Times at Dlish, Bangsar Village, the Group also

took the opportunity to present Dlishs latest

menu which are Mediterranean inspired:

Spanish, Greek and Middle Eastern.

Leaving behind their teachers and school

uniforms to join the world of tertiary education

can be daunting for many school leavers. On top

of having to decide which courses to pursue,

tudents are also asking questions such as How

dierent is college life from school?, Will my new

riends like me?, What do people wear to go for

classes?, or even How do I deliver presentations

o my lecturer and course mates?

With that in mind, the Y! team along with our

partner Syasya visited schools around the

Klang Valley for the Y! Glam: Grooming & Self

Condence for Youth workshop.

Y! Glam workshop aims to educate upper

econdary school students the importance of

grooming and self-condence, which will help

them with the transition from school to college

or university, and eventually as they enter the

workforce as young working adults. A range of

subject areas such as projecting self condence,

the art of communication, skin care, self hygiene,

health and tness, and fashion tips and advice

were shared with the students.

In May and June 2010, Y! Glam: Grooming & Self

An old soul is the last thing you would expect to nd inside Justin Bieber.But all it takes is one listen to the 16 year-old soul-singing phenomenon to realize that

he is light years ahead of his manufactured pop peers. And because we heard you

dear readers, were giving you the scoop on the cutie that has taken the world by

storm!

After posting dozens of homemade videos on

YouTube in 2007, where the multi-talented Bieber

put his impeccable spin on songs from artists like

Usher, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder, Justin racked up

over 10,000,000 views purely from word of mouth.

I started singing about three years ago, says the

Canadian native who grew up an only child in

Stratford in the province of Ontario. I entered a local

singing competition called Stratford Idol. The other

people in the competition had been taking singing

lessons and had vocal coaches. I wasnt taking it too

seriously at the time, I would just sing around the

house. I was only 12 and I got second place.

In an eort to share his victory with his loved

ones, Justin began posting his performance

footage online. I put my singing videos from the

competition on YouTube so that my friends and

family could watch them, he says. But it turned

out that other people liked them and they startedsubscribing to them. Thats how my manager found

me. He saw me on YouTube and contacted my

family and now Im signed!

Seven months after Justin started posting his videos

ASTRO for more than a year now with

French Food at Home and a Chateau

Special, Lauras approach to French cuisine is

nothing short of easy.

So, on her rst ever debut to Asia, Laura

chose Malaysia as her rst stop and BERJAYA

University College of Hospitality (BERJAYAUCH) was privileged to be appointed as an

ocial venue partner for her three day visit.

This event marked the third working

collaboration with AFC and for BERJAYA UCH,

the hands-on involvement of the students

(from rst semester all the way to fth

semester), were nothing short of remarkable.

More than 100 students volunteered their time

to provide the very best for A French Aair

with Laura Calder. It was so professionally

orchestrated that even the founders of AFC,

Maria Brown and Hian Goh were in awe of the

students zealousness that they couldnt help but

compare their service to that of a 5-star hotel.

The third annual UCTI Sports Carnival which

was held recently, was once again a day of

excitement and a celebration of resounding

success. Themed Unleash the Sports in You!, the

carnival was organized by the Student Activities

& Recreational Council of UCTI.

Datuk Prof. Mohd Yusof Kasim, Vice Chancellor of

UCTI, ociated the event and said, Such eventshelp cultivate greater unity among lecturers

and students especially since we are in an

The Vice Chancellors address was then followed

Why A-Levels?AC: I wasnt sure what I wanted to do after SPM

nd A-Levels seemed a wise option!WK: It is internationally recognized for entry intoplenty of degree programmes.MC: On top of that, compared to other matriculationprogrammes which are usually over 9-12 months,A-Levels 18-month programme just means wedont have to rush and cram everything in a shortpan of time!

Why did you choose to pursue yourA-Levels at KBU International College?AC: Im a PJ girl, and KBUs location is ideal for day-to-day commuting! My sister was also a student at KBUbefore, and they have this scheme where discounts

re given if your sibling studied here before. Thecost of the programme at KBU is cheaper too.WK: Both my sisters graduated from KBU, and I alsogot a scholarship to study here.MC: KBU gives out a lot of scholarships, and I wasucky to be given a partial scholarship which meansmy parents get to save money. Plus, the A-Levelsprogramme oered by Edexcel, which is a modularprogramme and oers greater exibility comparedo the Cambridge programme.

How do you think this course willequip you for your chosen eld offurther education?AC: Im looking at studying veterinary and A-Levelsprogramme provide me with a strong academic

foundation, and contrary to popular belief, a 100%exam focus is not all that bad!WK: Agreed its very personal too. Im looking atstudying Biotechnology or Pharmacy. For me, theexams are a driving force for me to study. Its not allabout memorizing though, because Im a practicalperson. Everything I learn, I relate it back to myday-to-day life. And having exams is just a goodmethod of gauging how much you have learnt.If we are graded on assignments and classroompresentations, its very subjective because it alldepends on the examiners preference.MC: A-Levels has given me a good balance. I ndthat I have time to pursue other interests outsideof the classroom. The course and examinations arevery structured, so if you plan your time well, we s till

get time for have fun and indulge in our hobbies. Iplan to pursue a Pharmacy degree.

What was your transition fromsecondary school to college like?AC: Im naturally quite outgoing, so the transitionwas easy. I loved the fact that our classroom hoursare not xed from 8am 5pm like it was in school.WK: My transition was smooth! This is the kind offreedom that Ive been dreaming of since schoolyears. A dierent day brings about a dierentexperience.MC: Initially it was daunting, but eventually I grewto be more condent and settled in well.

Tell us about the college experience atKBU.AC: The KBU student community is great! There arelots of activities, clubs, which we can participate in.

There are students from diverse backgrounds andnationalities all studying together.WK: The A-Levels lecturers are cool especially ourMath lecturer a real eccentric genius! Lecturers inKBU treat us all as adults, and give you the respectyou deserve. And they all have counselling hours fordierent subjects so even though its a big lectureclass, you can still catch up with your lecturer forone-to-one discussion time.MC: KBU is a conducive environment whichpromotes a healthy balance of work and play. And Iget to make friends from all over Malaysia and from

countries around the world.

What is the most valuable out-of-syllabus lesson youve learnt at KBU? AC:There is no such thing as spoon-feeding. If youwant answers and results, you work for it.WK: As a scholarship student, I know that theCollege is sponsoring my education. As such, I haveto devote some of my time when the College hasprojects and events which require my help. Ivelearnt that it must be a win-win situation, and thereis no such thing as a free lunch. You learn to giveand take.MC: KBU has taught me independence and Ivegrown and matured in the last 18 months.

With the rst class over, Liza moves on to otherectures and practical lab sessions in various state-of-the-art computer labs. Then, its lunch time! Athe food court, Liza meets her friends and decide

on their menu for the day. Malay, Chinese, Indiannd vegetarian stalls line the food section of the

cafeteria. International food stalls oering Iranian,Pakistani, Indonesian and Turkish cuisine are also

available. Today, Liza feels a little more adventurousand settles on the Iranian fare.

Lunch completed and having made plans to meeteach other after class, Liza and her friends part waysto complete their lectures for the day. Her next class,Fundamental Economics is at the central lecturecomplex, which houses most of the lecture hallsand tutorial rooms. Spacious and well-equippedwith air-conditioning, computerized facilities andmultimedia equipment, lectures are conductedin comfort and style, creating a conduciveenvironment for teaching and learning.

With her nal lecture over, Liza moves on to theDigital Library since she still has some time to spare.But before that, a brief stop at the exhibiti on boothsset up by various student societies in preparationfor the universitys Open Day. Moving on from onebooth to the next, Liza is reminded about how

much she enjoys being on campus. Never a dullmoment with a wide array of creative and excitingstudent-organised events or competitions!

At the Digital Library, Liza immediately startsresearch on one of her many assignments.Research is a breeze as the library oers access toover 100,000 books, 15,000 online journal titles anda large selection of reference materials. One needonly know where to look, and even this is facilitatedby the well-trained, friendly and helpful library staeager to point students in the right direction.

Time to go! Liza leaves the library, drops by herhostel room for a quick change of clothes and walksto the sports complex. Her friends have arrived and

together they head to the swimming pool, laughingand chatting excitedly. Ahh... the carefree life ofa tertiary student! Lizas friends from Saudi Arabia,Korea and Oman are happy to be able to join in, asthe pool is open to only ladies for certain days ofthe week. International friends are aplenty with thepresence of 79 nationalities at th e campuses.

After a swim, Liza and her fri ends grab some dinner,and then decide to attend an anime screening atthe lecture hall, since Liza holds membership in theJapanese Anime Society, one of the 140 registeredstudent societies within the university.

Right now, Liza is enjoying life with wonderfulfriends, great teachers, an exceptional learningenvironment and many brilliant opportunities toimprove herself academically and personally. Thereis always room for growth in every aspect of her life spiritually, intellectually, mentally and emotionally.

I like to read. In the years I notice there is one

type of books that is the most dicult to read.

Not so much because of their contents or the

subject matter, but because of the language.

These are the translated works. For some reasons,

the language is odd. Many things are lost in the

translation. Certain things are just dicult to be

translated into another language. (Try to read

any translated religious texts, they are the best

examples).

Sometime, translators resort into two strategies

to resolve this problem, to make the translation

more readable. One way is to simplify the text,

another is to replace concept in the original

language with another similar but not so

accurate, but more intelligible concept in

the second language. The rst strategy has a

problem of reducing the richness of the original

text and the second strategy is inaccurate.

What I want to write about in this article is not so

much about translation, but to use this example

to make you understand an important point.

If you ask me; how do we think? I will say, to

some extent, we think in languages. So, to some

extent our thinking is conditioned or aected by

language we use to think. Yes, we need to use

language to think. Without language, we can

only think at a very elementary level.

When a baby points to a chair and say chair; in

his mind he has a picture of a four legged, square

object. When his linguistic ability becomes more

developed, he will be able to form more images

of chairs; including one that he has never seen;

e.g. round chairs, triangle chairs, three legged

chairs, two legged chairs, one legged chairs,

chairs with no legs (hang up), etc. Chair is now

a generalized concept rather than a concrete

object. A concept can be applied to many

situations rather than one particular case. (For

more on this topic, please read my earlier article

What Do You Mean?in Jan-Feb 2010 issue).

However, each language has its own unique

concepts that are developed over the years.

These concepts often reect the uniqueness of

the particular culture and in turn condition the

thinking of the people speaking the language.

That is why it can be dicult to translate

something from one language to another,

although the translator is very competent in

both languages. For example, white is white

for us; it is not the same case for the Eskimos.

The Eskimos have dierent terms for a variety of

the colour white. This is very un derstandable for

people who live in an environment that has only

white. They need to dierentiate their whiteness.

Take another example; the Chinese language is

very rich in terms of dening family relationship.

In English we only have one term for relationship

such as uncle, auntie, cousin, grandparents and

so on. But in Chinese, paternal and maternal

relations are often dierentiated. Uncle and

auntie that is older or younger that our parents

are also dierentiated to indicate their relative

status. Paternal relations are considered closer

in blood tie and therefore paternal cousins are

not allowed to get married, unlike in many other

cultures. But such restrictions are not applicable

to maternal cousins.

Scientically speaking, paternal and maternalcousins are equally close in terms of blood

relation. Thus, when a Chinese speaker thinks

about family relation, it will be more complex

than an English speaker.

Individual standalone concepts can then be

joined together to form a sentence to mean more

things. The rules that we have to follow to form

sentences are called grammar of a language. For

many years I was trying to gure out the logic

behind the grammar of both English and Chinese.

(I am actually tri-lingua. Wow, most foreigners

will exclaim. But, so what, most Malaysians are).

After twenty odd years of trying, I nally come to

terms with reality. There are just no coherent rules

in any languages grammar; there are ways too

many exceptions to

rules. What we have to do is basically m

The Largest Youth Festival in Malaysia brought

he house down at PWTC during the weekend

of 28-30 May 2010.

Over three days, Youth 10 saw a record breaking

88,366 youths thronging through the halls as

hey explored the dierent festivals which

ncluded dance, music, sports, shopping,

discovery and a conference.

There were many activities and showcases by

various companies, groups and associations

which featured a mix of urban youth activities

such as break-dancing, martial-arts, band

competitions, theatre discovery, futsal

tournaments and a massive shopping bazaar!

Conference speakers included youth speakers

from a diverse background, and also personalities

such as singer-songwriter/ lm composer/ music

producer Pete Teo, TV personality Paul Moss,

blogger and Editor of Malay Mail Datuk Rocky

Bru, and CEO of Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad Dato

Seri Ahmad Shazalli Ramly among the list.

Youth 10 BroughtThe House Down!Black Light BanquetFormed in 2006 when the guys were still in

secondary school, Black Light Banquet started

out covering popular songs for school and

events. The band consisting of Adrian, Justin,

Kevin, Brad and Ryan were close friends and

shared the same music inuences and interests

which propelled them into the writing/

composing stage and they now have a large

number of original songs that they play live.

Their live shows are not to be missed as they

always are energetic, spontaneous and eccentric,

and what sets them apart from other bands is

their continuous interaction with the crowd.

Their music can be dened as a blend of rock

and powerpop with shots of catchy choruses

and melodious keyboard synths that will have

you craving for more. But beneath the music,

listeners will nd that they can relate to the lyricsemotionally. Though Black Light Banquet is still

new to the indie scene, these bunch of humble

guys vow to never give up in their quest to

spread their music nationally through the media

airwaves and hopes the day comes sooner rather

than later.

Army of ThreeOne of the freshest bands to come out of the

Klang Valley, the band consists of Je on lead

vocals and guitars, Alex on guitars and backing

vocals, Eddy on the drums and Darren on bass

and backing vocals.

Their music which bends towards Rock is

drawing excitement, attention and even

controversies, with questions raised concerning

how Rock themed inspirational music can t into

our conservative society. None the less, Army of

Three has a mission, not compromising to the

standards of the world, but doing what they are

called to do; reaching the world with their music

about hope, faith, peace and love, bringing a

positive message to youth.

The band is currently working on the debutalbum, with their rst demo single, Blind Me to

Seealready released from the studio. The band

is eager to share their music to the world and

in the process, develop their growing fan base

and create a new history in Malaysian music. The

band plans to establish themselves amongst

the best in local music and to bring their music

beyond Malaysia. They are hoping to get the

local media support such as the radio and TV

stations to push them to greater heights.

made a name for himself as a singer/

CaipifrutaCaipifruta is the musical brainchild of four singers

nd three instrumentalists, all of whom share a

common love of good music, good food, and a

healthy dose of craziness. Like the drink which

s their namesake, their musical style is fun,

mooth, prone to surprises and occasionally

ust a little nutty. The vocal quartet of Tracy

Wong (soprano), Lai Suk Yin (alto), Aaron Teoh

tenor), and Joel Wong (bass) rst met as part

of the Young KL Singers (YKLS) in Kuala Lumpur,

Malaysia. The incredibly talented instrumentalists

of Caipifruta are Tay Cher Siang (piano), Vincent

Ong (bass), and Edmund Yong (drums). They

have been playing together as a trio since 2009,

but individually they each have had extensive

musical experience in a variety of elds.

Penang, known lovingly as the Pearl of the Orient

has much to oer historically, culturally and of

course in terms of the local cuisine. Here are some

suggestions on what you could do and extra tips

to ensure you and your family or friends have a real

good time!

Tempting Adventures andSightsAmongst some of the places to visit besides the

historical spots like Fort Cornwallis and the War

Museum, or the tourist spots like the Penang Hill

and Kek Lok Si temple, you may want to go for

something more adventurous and dierent.

One such activity would be a trip to the Fishermens

Village near the Penang Port and Esplanade. As the

name suggests, this is an actual operating village

area for the local shermen. Here you would be

and take a ride down stream to Pantai Keracut/
