6. [Books on Books] TaschenTaschen Winter 2009/10 Catalog: Rich Books for Poor TimesTaschen, 2009. Unpaginated. A colorful catalog of offerings from Taschen, a publisher well-known for their high-quality, image-oriented printing, which often pushes the envelope of sexuality. Numerous book covers featured throughout, and profusely illustrated with photographs from within the titles offered, including a number of nudes. A particularly interesting catalog, given the reference in the title - this catalog was released shortly after the fallout from the 2008 economic crisis, an event which certainly had an effect on Taschen’s bottom line. In calling the catalog ‘Rich Books for Poor Times’, Taschen reaffirms its commitment to quality, and defends its habit of publishing some of the most cost-prohibitive printed works of modern times. Given Taschen’s habit of publishing multi-lingual works, it is likely a Spanish, French, and

12. [Ephemera] Grant, VernonFlibbity Jibbit and the Key KeeperThe Junket Folks / Chr. [Christian] Hansen’s Laboratory, Inc., Little Falls, 1943. [28 pp.] Lithographed picture book released as part of an advertising campaign by JunketRennet Powder and Tablets, which they say turns milk into ‘rennet-custards’. The powder was already sweetened and flavored, while the tablets were not, and the tablets are also advertised for making ice cream and cottage cheese. It is possible that Junket was attempting to capitalize on the commercial introduction of yogurt (which was also marketed in tablet form) to the United States, which happened in the early twentieth century. Rennet custards became a popular dessert for children in the eastern United

States. The company name, Junket, is now a term used to describe the dessert itself, and may derive from French, Italian, or Latin words all used to indicate a milkproduct. Junket was a company founded in Denmark in 1874, which opened an American location in Herkimer, NY (a center of cheese production at the time) in 1878. Rennet is still used in the production of some cheeses. Near fine. Wrappers lightly rubbed, two tiny faint spots on rear wrapper.

Jonathan Cape, London, 1964. First edition, second state (‘First published March 1964’ on copyright page - the first state does not mention the month). 255 pp. 8vo. Great - and very unusual - jacket art by Richard Chopping, with a toad squashing a dragonfly on a bamboo floor, with a bright pink water lily above.

From the jacket: ‘When Ernst Stavro Blofeld blasted into eternity the girl whom James Bond had married only hours before, the heart, the zest for life, went out of Bond.Incredibly, from being a top agent of the Secret Service, he had gone to pieces, was even on the verge of becoming a security risk. M is persuaded to give him one last chance - an impossible mission far removed from his usual duties - and Bond leaves for Japan. There, coming under the orders of the formidable‘Tiger’ Tanaka, Head of the Japanese Secret Service, the Koan-Chosa-Kyoku,

he is indeed subjected to the shock treatment his condition demanded. Shock treatment? The reader will also be subjected to it in full measure in this, perhaps the most bizarre anddoom-fraught of all James Bond’s adventures.’

Near fine in very good jacket. Jacket price clipped, other corners trimmed, minor wear to jacket corners, ink gift note on front endpaper.

$6519. [Firearms] Shumaker, P.L.Colt’s Variations of the Old Model PocketPistol, 1848 to 1872Borden Publishing Company, 1957. Second revised edition. ix, 150 pp. From the jacket flap: ‘The twelve chapters list 130 variations of the ‘commonest’ of all of Colt’spercussion revolvers, his ‘bread and butter’ pistols, which were mass produced forcommercial, domestic and foreign sales in the middle of the [19th] century.’ This area of Colt collecting was largely ignored by many enthusiasts who believed these revolvers too common to acquire. The author’s research shows that, given the number ofvariations, many revolvers previously believed common are actually much scarcer. An $45

interesting guide including information gathered from the author’s personal examination of over 2,000 actual specimens, compiling data that had been destroyed, and serving as a fascinating supplement to the many authoritative Colt collector’s references covering the manufacturer’s complete range of production. Very good in good jacket. Several small chips along jacket edges, 2 inch closed tear on top jacket edge.

Franklin Scientific Society of the University of Pennsylvania, etc. He explains in his introduction that this work closelyfollowed two separate works similar in focus, one of which was a failure because it dealt only with the eggs, and another of which ‘seemed of such high pecuniary value as to be beyond the public reach’. This, then, was the first volume available to the general reader to treat the subject.
