What type of exercise do you enjoy doing and why?

I do yoga as often as my schedule allows. On my days off I go walking for at least an hour. Bollywood and belly dancing are also an occasional and fun activity for me as well.

How often do you exercise? Daily!

Do you eat healthy/clean?

Fish and vegetables are my “go to” foods. Homemade meals are ideal. My hubby makes a great pizza with ancient grain crust! Also water is a must. We have an alkaline water machine in our home. I love cold-pressed juices and healthy shots of ginger, beets or turmeric.

What indulgence do you allow yourself every now and then?

Ice cream

What benefits have you enjoyed from your efforts in the area of exercise and nutrition?

with Reiko Stiver, guest services representative, Holiday Inn Resort® Waikiki Beachcomber

General well-being, joy and not having to make many sick calls to work!

What are you proud of in the area of health and wellness.

In the past, I have led the housekeepers in yoga exercises before work, and I felt good about helping our them start their day off on a positive note.

How do you “de-stress?”

I like to take a bath with Epsom salt. It helps to relax muscles and loosen stiff joints.

Do you have a favorite healthy recipe to share?

My stepdaughter Sierra Oh makes a wonderful salad with avocado, red onion and corn seasoned with just lime juice!

Anything else you’d like to share? Laughter is a must; it gets the blood circulating!

OUTRIGGER WAIKIKI BEACH RESORT “I recently had the pleasure of bringing a group of Australian Cheerleaders and Dancers to your gorgeous hotel during the 8th and 14th February 2017. “I wanted to write and share my experience with you. “I originally contacted the Outrigger Group and was given Gay Shinbara as my contact. I was bringing approx. 100 people with me and I didn’t know where to start on booking accommodation however Gay was absolutely amazing and assisted me throughout the booking experience. On accepting and signing off on the accommodation contract Gay turned me over to Gwen Boyce from the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort to manage the booking. “Where do I start when talking about Gwen? She has been absolutely amazing in assisting me with everything I needed to do to make this an unforgettable trip. I am not a Travel agent but Gwen explained everything to me and made sure I knew what I needed to do. She was absolutely amazing and nothing was too much trouble for her. She is an immense asset to the Outrigger Group and is the reason we will continue to return to the Outrigger on future tours. Gwen made everything easy for me and I cannot thank her enough. “The organisation on check in was amazing and the small touches such as having refreshments for a very weary travel

group was so warmly received by the group that it just added a great atmosphere to the hotel from the moment we entered. “All of your team we came in contact with were so friendly and helpful offering great service and hospitality everywhere we went. “I recently decided to become an accredited Travel Agent and work in Cheerleading and Dance Tours for Australian groups looking to travel to Hawaii and mainland USA. I will definitely be looking at sending the tours to an Outrigger property due to the amazing service we received from the start of our booking through to the end of the trip. “Please pass on my sincerest thanks to all of your team for their fabulous help in making this group trip a massive success.”Camilla NalderMaitland, NSW Australia Gwen Boyce

Chamorro Month celebratedBy Jacqueline Carter

Biba Mes Chamoru! Discover the native roots and indigenous culture of our island, as we celebrate Chamorro Month, Mes Chamorro. Outrigger Guam Beach Resort guests are invited to “Explore the Island of Guahan,” showcased in our lobby for the entire month of March. Guests can learn about Guam’s history and escape into the rich traditional culture and heritage of the Pacific. Under multiple forms of colonialism, the traditions and customs of Chamorro culture still lives on proudly for over 4,000 years. From artifacts to artwork, we celebrate the people and the history of the island. The lobby will showcase two exhibits displaying art pieces from local artists of The Guam Gallery of Art and Chamorro Artists Association and museum exhibition pieces from the cultural group Sagan Kotturan Chamoru of the Chamoru Cultural Center. On March 3, Outrigger Guam Beach Resort hosted an Opening Ceremony for Chamorro Month. The lobby was filled with music, dancing and food as artists, exhibitors and guests enjoyed the festivities. As Chamorro Month continues, the spirit, history and culture of the island will be celebrated.

Students learn the ropes at Outrigger Guam Beach ResortBy Clarissa Sacla

HR hosts JFK students to lunch at the Palm Café, complete with the “Birthday Cadence” experience

The Outrigger Guam Beach Resort hosted four students from the John F. Kennedy (JFK) High School’s Job Shadow Program Feb. 28 and March 1. The students are part of the Lodging Management Program (LMP) and ProStart® (culinary), both provide students at the secondary level (juniors and seniors) with education and training for jobs in tourism, hotel, restaurant management and culinary arts. The job shadow program provides students with brief hands-on experience in actual work settings.

LMP students, Keoni Manglona and Katelyn Villamayor, were introduced to front office, recreation and housekeeping operations, while ProStart® students, Harry Lee and Kristine Fajardo, immersed themselves in the service and food preparation side of food and beverage. All four eleventh graders have aspirations to pursue their career choices after high school graduation. The students are to make presentations of their job shadow experience March 14 at their school, inviting all businesses that participated in the project.

A safari up the Sigatoka River to visit authentic Fijian villages was one of the highlights of a visit to Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Castaway Island, Fiji by a media group from Singapore representing Sethlui.com and August Man Magazine. Utilising the new direct twice-weekly Fiji Airlines SIN/NAN service, media guests Siva Shankar, Wei Loong, Benjamin Neo, Marissa Mir and Phui Yin Siew experienced a day in the life of the real ‘kaiviti’ – people from Fiji – taking part in a kava ceremony and experiencing the lush jungle of the Sigatoka Valley. While staying at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort the group also attended a traditional Fijian Sunday church service and later relaxed at the resort’s award-winning Bebe Spa Sanctuary. They also enjoyed a hosted dinner at the resort’s Ivi Restaurant, recently voted Best Visitor Dining Experience at the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards. From Castaway Island, Fiji the group enjoyed a dolphin safari and a laid-back blue water experience at Cloud 9, Fiji’s only two-level, offshore floating platform complete with a bar and a wood-fired pizza oven. A guided snorkel tour of house reef, part of Castaway’s coral planting and reef conservation program, highlighted Outrigger’s commitment to preserving the environment.

Another culinary high point of their trip to Fiji was dinner at the resort’s 1808 barefoot-in-the-sand restaurant where they enjoyed cuisine that reflected the fusion of Fijian, Asian and western influences which are the modern Fiji. Through this partnership, we hope to raise the awareness of Fiji as a destination in Singapore and Southeast Asian audiences.
