BAGD Yearbook :

The yearbook is an annual publication designed to showcase the graduating 3rd year. The book is distributed to Industry Contacts, potential applicants and visitors to the end of year show. We also use the yearbook as a marketing tool to raise the profile of the course with feeder colleges and the creative industries.

In the light of this the Yearbook is a high spec, highly visible and professional publication that needs to communicate the prac-tical and conceptual standards of the Graphic Design programme.

What I have learnt :

Working as a part of a team. How to deal with professionals.More photography skills learnt from Mark Howe.

The Concept

Three. It’s been three years since we all began. We are the third graduating class in the short and successful history of BA (Hons.) Graphic Design, at Leeds College of Art. Three years of hard graft and constant development. Three Tutors that have pushed and nurtured us into professionaldesigners. Three studio spaces that have housed fun and creativeenvironments. Three years to get to this point in time. Three years and we have just begun. Three, you will find, is the magic number.

Grid System and Colour Pallet :

The grid also ties in with the ‘3’ concept. We placed 9 columns to each page whichallowed us to divide them by 3 once again. This system gave us the opportunity to use the grid system more effectively when placing 3 images on each spread, along with each students body copy.

The colour pallet changed from the original concept due to costs. We found to that to get a bright orange, we would have had to pay for a 5th spot colour, and our budget just wouldn’t allow it.

We then moved on to using Cyan and Magenta, although we found ourselves rarely us-ing the Magenta, so we scrapped that in the end also.

Tutor & Adjective Spreads :

When it came to producing the tutor and adjective pages, we wanted to do something a little bit different rather than a standard photo of a studio. We went on to take a few hundred of images of objects that we found in 3’s. (With the exception of the image on the right) which is going on Fred’s DPS.

The adjective pages turned out to be a great add on to the book. To keep with the rule of 3, we chose our favorite 3 images from all the ones taken and continued to halftone them. These pages now work as breakersbetween student spreads. The halftone has been kept at the same setting across all the halftone images with the same 85% Cyan overlayed.

Visiting Professionals :

We felt that the visiting professionals deserved some of their own DPS’s. The example on the left is Mark Howe’s. Mark helped us a lot with the photography for the yearbook and this is our thanks to him.

Once again we asked each VP (Visiting Professional) to sum up the course in 3 words. We also added theircontact details, disciplines and an about section where they could talk about themselves, their work, our work or their studio.

Photographing the Work :

After setting a date and time for people to hand-in 3-5 pieces of their work (plus vector files) we set up studio 4 for the photoshoot. Once we had all the work gathered together we seperated the pieces into 3 catagories: Packaging, Posters & Birds Eye View (flat).

We photographed all the work (minus the posters) on a white roll sheet. We wanted to get shadows on some of the pieces so they were not hovering in the book, however some of them came out a lot darker than we anticipated. So we took the final images that needed editing into photoshop and played around with the levels and brightness to perfect them.

Class Shot 08/11 :

When developing the book spreads, as a team wedecided that we didn’t want individual student pictures on their spreads. We felt this took the attention away from their work. It also gave us less space per spread which would have worked with our ‘3’ concept.

The Photoshoot :

The concept behind the class shot was to make it as personal to each student as possi-ble, while being surrounded by the rest of the class. We asked each student to bring in an object of their choice that represented them as a person. From this point we took individual shot of each student on an infinity drop and then used photoshop to put all the images together to produce the final resolution.

Student Spreads :

Example of a student spread shows the concept well. 3 pieces of work, contact details, rationale, 3 question answers and some spreads include placement the student may have had.

‘3’ Details :

As an add-on to the concept, all of the spreads(excluding the adjective pages) we have 3 answers given to us from questions we sent out on email.

Cover Design :

We wanted the cover design to give an insight into what the book is going to be like. We decided to use one of our ‘3’ half tone images. The image we chose shows the 3 lights that are situated above the 3rd year studio. This tied our concept of being the 3rd graduating 3rd year nicely.
