Year 5 Summer Term Topic: ‘SPACE’ Please find a selection of activities that you can do with your child for each curriculum subject. You can use this to create a schedule of home-learning

that works for you and your family. We have designed this for you so that you can do as many activities as your child would like; you do not have to

compete them all. Choose what your child enjoys doing. We would love to see any work that your child would like to show us however this is not an

expectation. If your child would like to show us what they have been doing, please email it to [email protected]

There are several You tube links below that will help your child with their learning. However, we know that You tube does not always filter its content. If you are worried about this, you can

download https://safeshare.tv/ You sign up for free and can then add You tube or Vimeo links. It removes advertisements and other unwanted distractions such as annotation, so that they can

be viewed safely without the hassle of first having to download and convert videos with YouTube Downloader. Instead, you simply copy/paste the URL of the YouTube or Vimeo video into

SafeShare.tv. This will generate a Safe View containing only the video and some basic controls to control the start/end position.

This week’s activities

LITERACY: Acrostic poems Resources that you may need

Activity 1:

In an acrostic poem, the first letter of each line spells a word. The word is the subject of the poem.

Watch this clip and have a go at the online activity underneath:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4mmn39/articles/ztdvw6f

Think about what you would like to write your acrostic poem about! Make

it space related! Write down all the words that you can think of that are

related to space!

Activity 2: Vocabulary shopping!

Choose your word and write down all the words that you can think of that

are related to it…For example for ROCKET, I might write down:

Launch

Zoom

Blast

Engines

Use any space books you have and the internet to

shop for exciting vocabulary!

Activity 3: Write

After all of your planning now it is time to write

your acrostic poem. Include:

Alliteration (when words start with the same sound)

Similes (a figure of speech that directly compares

two different things. The simile is usually in a

phrase that begins with the words "as" or "like."

Complete the task below.

RE: The Ascension of Jesus

Resources that you may need

Activity 1

Slide 1 - Ask where the word ‘good-bye’ comes from?

It’s a shortened form of the words, ‘God be with you’. So every time you say good-bye to someone, you’re actually saying that

you want God to be close to them. It’s a blessing in disguise! Perhaps you want God to be with them as they set out on a

dangerous journey. Or maybe you know you’re going to miss them and you want to be sure God will be close to them even if

you can’t be.

Slide 2 - What is the French word for ‘goodbye’? It’s ‘au revoir’ which really means ‘Till we see each other again,’ or ‘See you

again soon!’ It is a hopeful thing to say. You’re saying, ‘I’m looking forward to seeing you soon!’

Slide 3 - And German is ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ which means the same as the French.

Does you know how to say goodbye in other languages? What do they mean when translated into English?

I wonder if someone has ever left you without saying good-bye. (Use an example from your own life).

The first time Jesus left his friends, there wasn’t time to say good-bye. Do you remember? Jesus was arrested in the garden at

night-time, and his friends were so scared they all ran away. And Jesus was killed on the cross before they had time to say

good-bye to him. I wonder how that made them feel?

Slide 4 - But that wasn’t the end of the story! On Easter Day Jesus came back to life and they all met him again. So instead of

the long good-bye they had thought, it was a big hello! Can you remember some of the times Jesus met his friends after he’d

come back to life? (Prompt them to remember Mary outside the tomb, Thomas, the Road to Emmaus, breakfast on the beach).

Jesus was with them again, but in a special way – he could be anywhere, he could walk through walls and there was something

different about the way he looked, as people didn’t always recognise him at first. But he was with them.

Show clip of the Resurrection and Ascension from YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZRGp-y3wTU

Show slide 5 and read the scripture version: Acts of the Apostles 1:6-11

Show slide 6 and explain the Ascension – see ideas below:

Then forty days after Easter, he called his friends up onto a mountain near Jerusalem and told them all about the job he had for

them to do – to tell people all over the world what they had seen him say and do. And in case they were feeling a bit scared of

doing such a big thing, he promised them that his Holy Spirit would come and help them do this job. This was great news,

because Jesus’ Holy Spirit was just the same as Jesus – so he wasn’t saying ‘I’m leaving for ever’, he was saying ‘see you again

soon!’ And then Jesus blessed them – perhaps he was saying ‘God be with you’ or ‘goodbye’?

And as they watched, he was taken up to heaven to be with his Father God as well. So his friends weren’t sad, as we sometimes

are when we say good-bye. They were very glad that Jesus could be with his Father and with them too. Although in one way,

Jesus had gone, they knew he was still with them in another, better way and that they would see him again soon.

Look at and discuss slides 7, 8 and 9.

Activity 2

Using coloured paper or tissue paper, use hand cut outs to make the flames of the Holy Spirit. Everyone in your house can join

in!

Coloured paper/tissue paper

Activity 3:

Imagine you are an apostle; write a letter to a friend which gives examples of what you will do and how

you will give witness to Jesus in your life after the Ascension. Refer to the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1: 6-

14) and reference some of this.

Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1: 12-14) Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath

day’s journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were

staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus,

and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of[a] James. 14 All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with

certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Where is Florida?

Florida is situated at the south-east corner of the United States of America - USA - and is surrounded by water on three sides, making it a peninsula. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south, and the Gulf of Mexico to the west.

At the southern tip of Florida is a chain, or archipelago of islands made of sand and coral, called the Florida Keys.

What is it like in Florida?

The land in Florida is very flat and most of it lies only just above sea level. It has a tropical and subtropical climate meaning it is very warm, humid and wet almost all year round. Although it is called the ‘Sunshine State’, Florida is also at risk from hurricanes in summer and autumn. These are very strong storms that can create lots of damage

to buildings and land.

When it rains in Florida, it rains heavily. The large amounts of rainfall collect in lakes, rivers, underground springs and swamps. This has created places such as the Everglades in the south - a wet marshy area where alligators, turtles and snakes live.

Florida’s main industries are:

farming - tomatoes, strawberries and oranges are grown here

tourism - its miles of beaches, amusement parks and state parks attract over 100 million visitors each year

Why did NASA choose Florida for its rocket launch location? For over 60 years, NASA has been launching rockets from Cape Canaveral, Florida, The weather does not always cooperate for rocket launches as more thunderstorms erupt in Florida per year than in any other state. Despite the threat of thunderstorms and hurricanes, NASA still uses this as their main launch facility for two main reasons highlighted below.

1. Proximity to the ocean

Some of the first American rockets were launched in the 1940s far away from Florida at the White Sands Missile Range, located in the desert of New Mexico. It was here where the United States launched its first rocket powerful enough to climb more than 62 miles (100 km) above the Earth’s surface, the boundary that marks the official start of outer space. This part of New Mexico is a remote location where small rockets could be launched and later recovered after crashing in the desert. However, as rockets grew in size and started to travel farther than ever before, the United States needed to find a new launch site where rockets could launch and travel safely over unpopulated areas. The United States decided to move their large rocket launching operation to Cape Canaveral, Florida, and on July 24, 1950, the first of thousands of rockets launched from the facility. Cape Canaveral is located along the East Coast of the United States so rockets can be safely launched to the east over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. If there is an issue with the rocket after lift-off, space flight operators can safely put it down in the Atlantic Ocean without endangering the public. Modern day rockets also are comprised of multiple stages. When one stage runs out of fuel, it can be shed from the rocket and fall into the ocean without harm. SpaceX has taken advantage of this, sending a floating platform out in the Atlantic Ocean where the first stage of their Falcon 9 rocket can land after sending its payload into space.

2. Speed boost from the Earth’s rotation

The second reason why the United States uses Cape Canaveral as its primary launch site is due to its proximity to the equator. The equator is an imaginary circle around the earth. It divides Earth into two equal parts: the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. It runs east and west halfway between the North and South poles. The distance around the Equator is about 24,900 miles (40,000 km) the Equator appears on maps and globes.

“The west-to-east rotation of the Earth causes all points on Earth (except the poles themselves) to move eastward with some velocity,” NASA said. This eastward velocity is greatest at the equator with the Earth rotating at a speed of roughly 1,040 mph. This rotational speed decreases as objects move closer to the poles, reaching zero for objects directly over one of the poles.

NASA takes advantage of Earth’s natural rotation by launching toward the east from Cape Canaveral. The speed at which the Earth rotates at Cape Canaveral is roughly 914 mph, helping to give rockets some extra speed to reach their destination.

While it is not impossible to launch rockets from the higher latitudes, the extra speed boost from the Earth’s rotation saves on fuel that would be used to help the rocket achieve the proper speed. A rocket launching from Florida can send a heavier spacecraft or satellite into space.

The extra speed from Earth’s rotation is one of the reasons why the European Space Agency (ESA) launches its rockets from the French Guiana, which is located close to the equator.

NASA plans to continue to use Cape Canaveral in the future as its primary launch site in the future for its new upcoming rocket, the Space Launch System.
