Introduction

This pack contains tasks to be completed over the summer break. There are tasks to help you to consolidate your Year 9 learning, and pre‐learning tasks to support you to get a much‐needed head‐start in your Year 10 GCSE subjects.

Completing these tasks will help you to feel more prepared, and therefore more confident, in September.

We want you to enjoy the summer but also not forget all the hard work you have completed in Year 9.

You should pass any completed work to your new subject teachers in the first week back. Your reward will be feeling better and stronger in lessons.

The biggest problem that pupils face when they start their Maths GCSE is “exam technique”. This is the skill

of spotting what the question is asking you to do. Unfortunately without this, you cannot get the marks,

even if you are really confident on all of the topics which make up Maths.

To help you with this, we have produced a number of “Walking Talking Mocks” which are available on the

Maths section of the VLE.

These work as follows. You load up the exam paper, and you load up the video which corresponds to the

exam paper. Either Mr Caine or Miss Simons, will talk you through exactly how to answer every question on

the paper… only they will do it with slightly different numbers to the ones that you see! Once you have

watched them do the question, try it yourself, and check your answer and working out against the mark

scheme. If you want to do extra practice papers independently, use www.onmaths.com

Science

What key learning do I need to revise?

1. From your Key stage 3 biology work on cells you should produce a revision poster showing

an animal and plant cell. Include:

a. Cell structure‐ the different sub‐cellular structures and what their functions are.

b. Diffusion‐ how particles move by diffusion.

2. From your Key stage 3 chemistry work on atoms and the periodic table, produce revision

flash cards showing:

a. Definitions‐ define each key word: atom, molecule, element and compound.

How can I get a head start?

1. Start by familiarising yourself with your Component 3 set text for this year: Dennis Kelly’s DNA. You can watch the performance online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj6Q2xupXCg&t=3s and read the playtext on the VLE‐ it’s saved in The Year 9 area in a folder entitled, ‘Summer Learning.’

2. Once you are familiar with DNA, create revision resources including a plot outline, notes on key themes and character pages for each character. You can include key adjectives to describe them, key quotes that tell us something about their character and you can design costumes for them, including any personal props you think they might need.

Task 1: From your work on the musculo‐skeletal system, create a mind map on of the key knowledge you need to remember. This will show how effective your basic knowledge recall is. You must include:

1. Functions of the skeleton 2. Types of joints 3. Examples of each type of joint in the body and the movement that

occurs there e.g. elbow = flexion and extension

Magazines Please use the VLE to watch all of the lessons that have been recorded for Reveal and Tatler. There are timed tasks to complete on this as well. Advertising Rewatch the Galaxy Audrey Hepburn advert, the NHS Blood Advert and look at the OMO advert. Make notes on how each advert attracts its target audience and how it is a product of its times. For example: OMO was produced in 1955. How does this have an impact on its target audience? What was society like in the 1950s? The Galaxy advert was produced in 2012, but was set in the 1950s. How do the producers present the 1950s? Think about nostalgia. NHS Represent is the most contemporary advert. Who is it aimed at and why? How does it aim itself at this audience? Think about the lyrics of the song and how it attempts to subvert stereotypes. Create spider diagrams/mind maps for each of these or flash cards.
