Day 1 - Monday 13th September

Reading

Humorous Comics This needs to be handed into the Humorous Comics assignment on Google Classroom

This week we will be exploring lots of different humorous (funny)

texts and sharing our opinions.

Activity 1: Read all 3 comics below (Waddle On, Cyanide and Happiness, Garfield). In your book, use the ‘OREO’ technique (Opinion-Reason-Explain-Opinion) to write your opinion about your favourite/least favourite comic. Example:

O: The Garfield comic was my favourite comic.

R: This is because each frame had its own joke and the comic got

funnier as you kept reading.

E: For example, Garfield’s facial expressions changed throughout

the strip as he was reading each sign, which added to the humour.

O: That is why I prefer the Garfield comic.

Activity 2: Now use the O.R.E.O. technique and write about your favourite/least favourite book

character. You may like to use the template below (on page 5).

Trami’s Opinion:

O: Harry Potter is my least favourite book character of all time.

R: The reason is because he never listens to anyone and therefore ends up causing more trouble -

which could have been prevented if he followed the advice of others!

E: For example, in book 5 when Professor Snape was teaching him how to control his mind (for his own

safety), he was stubborn and didn’t listen. Voldermolt was then able to intercept his thoughts, which

resulted in the demise of another important character. *I will not mention names incase I spoil it for

anyone*

O: Harry’s stubbornness and lack of listening skills is why I think Harry Potter is the worst book

character.

Writing

Story Writing

This week we want you to create some characters based on the drawings you did with Mandy Ord two weeks ago. You can create some new drawings and characters today or use the drawings you have already.

You will need to think about the characters you create and make up a character profile for them.

You can use the character profile template below (page 10) to help you.

You will use these characters throughout this week to write a narrative of any sort you like,

story, comic strip, script etc.

There is a competition below you might like to enter if you are really happy with your work at

the end of the week.

Once you have finished your story you might like to enter it in the 2021 Kids News Short Story Competition. The competition has four age groups: Kindergarten to Year 2; Years 3-4; Years 5-6 and Years 7-9. The only rule is the story must be between 250 and 750 words. A panel of judges, led by award-winning author Jackie French, will choose the winning entries, with the first prize in each age category winning 10 copies of their short story published into a printed book with a personally designed cover, plus an iPad and a HarperCollins book pack. *This is only optional but if you would like to enter your story, your parents must sign the consent form on this website and send it along with your typed story to your teacher:

Maths Maths Project

Warm Up: List 5 fractions which are NOT equivalent to a half.

Example:

is NOT Activity: This week you will have a choice to work on ONE of two projects. The Two Project Options are:

Project One: The ONE MILLION DOLLAR Spending Project. See details below (on pages 10, 11 & 12). Project Two: THE ROAD TRIP Spending Project Use a map to plan a road trip between 500 and 1000 km long. Where will you go? You should also work out the following:

● Estimate the cost of petrol for the trip ● How much time will it take to complete the trip? ● Where will you stop to eat? ● How much will food cost? ● Plan your itinerary with arrival and departure times ● Can you find an alternate route to the same destination that would be shorter/ longer

in distance? Compare the time and petrol costs.

BQT

Aboriginal Astronomy

*You will complete this lesson with the whole class at 10:00am Monday*

Activity: Fill in this ‘See Think Wonder’ table as you watch and read the following two texts

1. Watch- Star Tales: Milky Way | Stargazing Live: Australia Episode 1 Preview - BBC Two https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLGyYW7j-xU&t=5s

2. Read- The Emu in the Sky The Emu in the Sky The Coalsack is a dark cloud just below the Southern Cross. For many Aboriginal people across Australia, this is the head of the Emu in the Sky, which stretches from the Southern Cross along the dust lanes of the Milky Way to the constellation Scorpius. Unlike non Aboriginal people, the Kamilaroi and their neighbours see the dark spaces (dust lanes) of the Milky Way, rather than the stars, as important, because this is where the Emu in the Sky is seen. The Guringai people of Sydney saw the Emu like this, with the legs stretched out behind:

The Emu first becomes visible as the Milky Way rises in the evening in April and May, and at this time

Page 10: Year 3/4 - Learning @ Home, Term 3, Week 10

10

the Emu appears to be running. The Kamilaroi (an Aboriginal clan) see this as when the emus on Earth are breeding, and the female is chasing the male. This also means that the female emu will be laying eggs, so it is time to start collecting emu eggs for food.

Day 2 - Tuesday 14th September

Reading

*You will complete this lesson with the whole class at 10:00am Tuesday*

Humorous Poems

Activity 1: Read/watch BOTH poems below. Then write your opinion about the poems in your book.

1. Which poem do you prefer?

2. Give reasons to support your opinion above. You can use the O.R.E.O. technique from yesterday.

Here are some sentence starters you might want to use: In my view… From my point of view… The way I see it… I (strongly) believe that... Personally I believe...

Today The Teacher Farted - Emma Briody

Today the teacher farted. It was an awful smell. It was just like a rotting egg, Straight from the depths of hell! She tried to keep it secret By sitting in a group. But it was really obvious, When she said, "Who did that poop?" She screwed her bright, red face up And blamed it all on Claire. But later when I needed help, The stench was round her chair! She avoided my eye contact And ticked my work in green. But she knew that her body smells Were foul and quite obscene. I asked her what that smell was. She said she'd not a clue. I hope to God that eggy smell Was fart and not a poo! Today the teacher farted. My word, what had she ate? I'll always remember what she did, And now I'm thirty eight!

No Breathing in Class - Michael Rosen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1cfVQyrQ3Q

Activity 2: Read for at least 20 minutes. What do you think of the book so far? In your opinion, would you recommend the book to others? Explain your reasons and write it in your book.

Page 15: Year 3/4 - Learning @ Home, Term 3, Week 10

15

Writing Continue from yesterday creating your character based on the drawings you did with Mandy Ord and

writing your story. Story length needs to be 250-750 words.

Maths Warm Up: List 5 items you would never measure in millimetres. Activity: Continue working on your Maths Project.

Critical and Creative Thinking

This week you will be given short ‘Thinking Provocation’ projects where you need to use your critical and creative thinking skills. These provocations (something that sparks your interest) help to stretch our thinking. You will need to be innovative, creative and ask yourself questions (e.g. what am I wondering about...). Thinking Provocation: Zeitgeist

On a faraway planet known as Zeitgeist, alien families take part in many highly unusual hobby/recreational activities. Design at least three new ones for them, and consider the following information about their planet: • the average family has twenty children • Zeitgeistians have ten hands • no one ever fights with anyone else • the planet surface is covered by billions of tiny golden pebbles. You may like to record your thinking using a mind map, draw your designs and take notes about why you created the 3 new hobby/fun activities for the aliens, the Zeitgeist.

Topeng Indonesia

Mask making has been a part of Indonesian culture for thousands of years. The Indonesian word for mask is topeng. Topeng are worn during ceremonies and performances.

Topeng are most commonly found on the islands of Java and Bali, but have cultural significance for many indigenous people. Genuine performance masks are sacred and are believed to possess magical

powers. They are only made by master craftsmen and worn by specially trained performers

and priests.

Activity: Create your own topeng by reflecting the image below. Then colour in your mask and cut it

out.

Critical and Creative Thinking

Thinking Provocation: Improve on an Everyday Product We often accept the inadequacies of many products, without really considering how they can be improved. Today you have a chance to improve on an everyday product! Choose an object, e.g. an umbrella, or a practice, e.g playing on the playground, and list a number of its disadvantages. Then list some ways of correcting, or eliminating these disadvantages. Example: An umbrella

The Disadvantages The Improvements

The sharp sections can poke you in the eye. Glue flat erasers onto the end of each one.

They take up too much room, even when folded.

Create a series of locking hinges along the length of the umbrella.

Water drips onto your shoes. Attach an overhanging plastic sheet to the edges of the umbrella.

Humorous Stories

Watch all 3 stories below: Humpty Dumpty - How it should have ended https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpnq5Hl8uwQ The Day the Crayons Quit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=489micE6eHU The Great Eggscape

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7HY9mW1grk

Now give your opinion:

1. Which story was your favourite? Give reasons.

2. Which story was your least favourite? Give reasons.

3. Which character(s) stood out to you? Elaborate.

4. What are your thoughts about the alternative ending for Humpty Dumpty?

5. In your opinion, what could the author/illustrator/reader do to make the stories even funnier?

Critical and creative thinking

Thinking Provocation: Clothing Company A highly innovative clothing company called InGear has developed an amazing new range of clothing that actually changes colour according to the wearer’s emotions. If you are happy, your shirt or dress will turn yellow, and if you are in a really bad mood, they will change to a red shade. Being embarrassed will cause your gear to turn bright orange. To promote their new designs, InGear have provided a free outfit for everyone in your family to wear for a full day. Brainstorm at least ten (positive) things that are likely to happen during the day.

Writing Activity: This is your last day to work on your story. Story length - 250-750 words.

Maths Warm Up: Find 10 uses for a broken ruler.

Activity: Finish your Maths Project.
