You need to be careful when using the verb ‘JUGAR’ as this is a stem-changing verb. We add the ‘ue’ making the verb different, to its stem verb ‘JUGAR’.

• Juego al balconcesto con mis amigos I play basketball with my friends

• Mis amigos juegan al tenis después del colegio. My friends play tennis after school

We use the verb ‘HACER’ to talk about sports which do not include balls. Sometimes we translate these to ‘I go’, in English. See examples below.

• Hago la natación en mi polideportivo local. I go swimming in my local sports centre.

• Hago la equitación con mi hermano a veces. Sometimes I go horse-riding with my brother.

Unit One – Cultural Extension Task

La Pelota Vasca- “Basque ball”

Pelota is one of the most popular sports in the Basque Country, it’s the common name for a variety of ball games played against a wall, called a fronton. Similar to a combination of

squash and handball, it can be played using your hand, racket or wooden bat. Pelota is a fast-moving game that you can play one-on-one, in partners or in a team.

What and where is the Basque Country?

The Basque Country is a unique part of Spain located on the country’s northern coast, and like many places in Spain, it has its own culture, identity, food and even language. In this part of Spain, everybody is bi-lingual and speaks Spanish as well as Basque (a very unusual

and unique language!)

Types of Pelota

Some of the main types of pelota include hand, pala, zesta punta and remote. Each involves a different number of people, size of court or piece of equipment to hit the ball with.

- Zesta punta means ‘edged or pointed basket’, and in this version of the game, rubber balls are caught inside the basket and then hurled back into the court at the wall. The Basques apparently claim that this version is ‘the fastest game on Earth’.

- Hand Pelota, like the name suggests, is played with bare hands and balls are made

from wool covered in leather. The rules are similar to squash in that balls are hit against the wall, whilst trying to get them out of your opponent’s reach.

- Pala on the other hand, refers to the pelota games played with a racket. They can

vary from long bats to short ones, ones made from rubber and others made from leather.

- Remote is played with a short, flat basket glove, like in zesta punta, and can be played one-on-one or by teams of two.

Origins of Pelota

Pelota sports are thought to have originated in Ancient Greece, and while it is most popular today in the Basque Country, it is also played in other parts of Spain and France, much of South America, the Philippines and some places in the United States.

Basque pelota was an official Olympic sport for the 1900 Paris Games. During these Olympics there were only two teams competing in the pelota competition – France and Spain. Spain eventually won and this may have increased its popularity in the region.

Pelota Courts

Most Basque villages have a pelota court or fronton, where locals can practice and play, it is often attached to the village church. The largest fronton is located in the city of Bilbao, called the Bizkaia Frontoia. It was opened in 2011 and holds around 3,000 spectators

Spain is famous for its food and wine which is consumed all over the world. One of the country’s most famous exports is tapas. A tapa is an appetizer or snack served in Spanish restaurants, cafes and bars. All sorts of food can be served as a tapa, it is a small portion that may be served hot or cold. Examples include: aceitunas (olives), boquerones (anchovies), albóndigas (meatballs), patatas bravas (potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce), calamares (battered squid), chorizo (paprika flavoured sausage) and croquetas (breadcrumbed fried food roll with different fillings). Another dish often served at room temperature as a tapa is tortilla, an omelette containing potatoes and onions. Spanish people do not eat dinner until 10pm or 11pm and therefore it is very normal to go out for tapas in the early evening or after work. Another famous export is jamón ibérico which is a type of cured ham. To be considered true jamón ibérico it must be made using meat from a breed of pig called “Pata Negra” (literally “Black hoof”). These are often reared in fields lined with Oak trees and the pigs’ diet of acorns gives the ham a distinct flavour. The ham is left to cure and mature for up to 3 years before it is eaten. The finest ham is sold for several hundred euros per kilogram. Spaniards usually drink coffee for breakfast. This is either served con leche (with hot milk) or solo (black, without milk). At breakfast time they often eat tostadas, pieces of toasted baguette which can be served with mermelada (jam) or tomate (fresh tomato puree).

La Tomatina Festival

La Tomatina is celebrated every year, in a village called Buñol, near Valencia. It is a crazy festival that takes place on the last Wednesday of August and is the biggest tomato fight in the world!

Thousands of people flock to the village to join the tomato-throwing event. The amount of participants has now been limited to 22,000 for safety reasons. In the morning, lorries (los camiones) arrive, loaded with around 160 tons of tomatoes that have been specially grown for the festival. The special tomatoes are extra ripe so that they are extra soft and don’t hurt people when thrown.

The day begins at around 10 a.m. with the 'greased pole,' called el palo jabón. People try to climb up the slippery pole where there is a leg of ham attached to the top. When a lucky person eventually manages to fetch the ham (el jamón) the tomato fight can begin! Before the battle begins, shops and windows are boarded up so that they are protected.

The tomato fight - la batalla - usually starts at around 11 a.m. and it lasts for one hour. A signal is fired, meaning that the tomato-throwing can begin. Everyone shouts ¡Tomate! ¡Tomate! as they throw los tomates. One hour later, another

signal means that the tomato-throwing must stop. Everybody is in a terrible state because they are covered in tomato juice, seeds and bits! At the end, the messy streets are hosed down with water.

Since 2013, there is also a mini version of the festival for children aged 4 to 14 years. It is called la Tomatina Infantil and it takes place a few days before the main event - on Saturday. Why does this festival exist? This traditional event dates back to 1945 when some naughty boys decided to throw tomatoes at a procession taking place on the last Wednesday of August. The boys decided to do the same thing during the procession the following year.
