Dear Students and Parents,

This handbook has been designed to highlight a number of subjects that are available to you and may be relevant to your future studies. It is important that you read through all sections carefully and seriously consider your options.

Year 10 is the culminating year in the Australian Curriculum. You will find Year 10 studies more demanding than in Year 9. Greater rigour and the level of expectations is raised as you work towards becoming an independent learner. It is imperative that you are conscientious and self-disciplined at all times. Cavroadians are expected to work to the best of their ability, both in class and at home.

Year 10 is the time to start honing in on your preferred future pathway. There are many options available at our school which will assist you to achieve your post school goals. There is an expectation at Cavendish Road State High School that all graduating students achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) upon successful completion of the senior phase of learning. This usually occurs at the end of their Year 12 studies.

Students are required to develop a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan during Year 10. The SET Plan maps out a student’s plan of action for their education and training in theSenior Phase of Learning which includes the completion of the Senior Certificate.

Subject choice at this level is an important task. This must be approached with great care and a good deal of thought. You will have further opportunities to consider your educational experiences alongside your strengths and aspirations when you make your subject selections for study in Years 11 and 12.

Seek and follow the advice. The best advice in choosing elective subjects is to consider those subjects:-

that you find interesting and that you have previously been successful in.

I encourage you to seek the advice of your parents, teachers, guidance officers and Heads of Department to assist you in your decision making process.

I trust this information will be helpful as you make decisions which help guide your child’s educational experience and, as always, my support is extended to all families.

Yours in education,

Richard Usher BA LLB Dip Teach EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL

At Cavendish Road State High School, the Guidance Officers are responsible for the Career Education Programs that students participate in from Years 7 –12. These programs assist in helping students identify their personal strengths and abilities and gaining an understanding of the world of work. Students will also learn about post schooling options at TAFE, university and apprenticeships that lead to the qualifications required for different and specific job opportunities. Students are able to access career counselling, advice and support from the Guidance Officers. Parents are welcome to attend these sessions. Please contact Mr Lynch, Ms Larsen, Mr Stewart, Mrs Wilkinson or Mr Lynch, to learn more about post school options.

INTRODUCTION: This subject is a core subject that all year 10 students will complete. The Year 10 curriculum supports students to refine and apply strategies for maintaining a positive outlook and evaluating behavioural expectations in different leisure, social, movement and online situations. Students learn to critically analyse and apply health and physical activity information to devise and implement personalized plans for maintaining healthy and active habits. They also experience different roles that contribute to successful participation in physical activity, and propose strategies to support the development of preventive health practices that build and optimize community health and wellbeing.

In Year 10, students learn to apply more specialized movement skills and complex movement strategies and concepts in different movement environments.

INTRODUCTION: The Design subject focuses on the application of design thinking, drawing skills and 3D modelling skills required to develop creative ideas in response to human centred needs, wants and opportunities. Designing is a complex and sophisticated skill that can be analysed, practised and improved. It is separated from the constraints of materials and production procedures to allow the designer to appreciate and exploit new innovative ideas. Students will analyse a design problem, generate and evaluate their ideas for developing a solution, produce a product and then evaluate on its effectiveness. Students will use modern computer aided design software to generate digital prototypes of their designs. This is a preparation subject for the Senior General subject: Design.

INTRODUCTION: Would you like to become a better decision maker in today’s world? Would you like to understand how to thrive in that world you are heading into? Would you like to understand how the news affects you, so that in the face of challenged you can overcome them? Then Economics is DEFINITELY for you! Economics is a study of how to use scarce resources in the best way possible. Households, businesses and governments are confronted with “the economic problem” of alternative uses of their limited resources. For this reason, Economics is sometimes commonly referred to as the science of choice. Within this course students will study: how market systems operate and factors that influence financial success, how governments target objectives of improved living standards and economic growth, how to utilise economic indicators to assess economic performance (i.e. GDP Growth Rates, unemployment rates, inflation, dwelling sales, building approvals)

INTRODUCTION: With Geography, you are nowhere! A career in Geography opens up doors to many different, exciting career paths such as Town Planning, Engineering, Business, Architecture and Law. Geography is all about the real world and exploring, analysing and explaining the characteristics of the places that make up our world, based on the concepts of place, space and environment. A study of geography develops students’ curiosity and wonder about the diversity of the world’s places and their people, culture and environment. Geography emphasises the role of the environment in supporting human life, the important interrelationships between people. Students are involved in two units of study – Environmental Change and Management and Geographies of Human Wellbeing – with a focus on Australian, Asian and international aspects of these studies. Students will also undertake a field excursion and overnight camp to Moreton Island.

CONTENT ASSESSMENT

UNIT 1

Environmental change and management focuses on investigating environmental geography through an in-depth study of a specific environment. The unit begins with an overview of the environmental functions that support all life, the major challenges to their sustainability, and the environmental worldviews that influence how people perceive and respond to these challenges.

Field report on Moreton Island

UNIT 2

Geographies of human wellbeing focus on investigating global, national and local differences in human wellbeing between places. This unit examines the different concepts and measures of human wellbeing, and the causes of global differences in these measures between countries.

INTRODUCTION: Philosophy is fast becoming a buzz word in the education field. Research has proven that learning the critical thinking skills which are at the very heart of philosophy, improves student outcomes in all disciplines and provides a foundation upon which all other subject matter can be built upon. The aim of this course is twofold, firstly it teaches the students the critical thinking skills of reasoning deductively and inductively, effectively increasing their higher order thinking ability and essay writing technique. Secondly, it provides students with an introduction into two exciting branches of the discipline, Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Happiness. Through our exploration of key concepts within these frames, students will be given the opportunity to flex their reasoning and argumentation skills through Communities of Inquiry/Socratic Circles which cover a range of topics from ‘What is identity?, to ‘To be happy must we undergo suffering?’ This course will provide students with a solid foundation to excel in years 11 and 12.

CONTENT ASSESSMENT

UNIT 1

Philosophy of Mind: Students will explore theories of identity and Philosophy of Mind by engaging in a series of thought experiments and Socratic discussions. During the unit, students will analyse and evaluate concepts of materialism, physicalism and personhood proposed by philosophers such as Hume, Parfit, Locke and Descartes.

Who is Jack? Extended Research Response: Analytical Essay 600-800 words Jack wants to change his life so he decides to undergo a mind renovation. At the end of the process, Jack leaves the clinic feeling changed. However, his mind has been transplanted into another person, John. The question is, who is Jack?

UNIT 2

Philosophy of Happiness: The purpose of this unit is for students to apply the Ancient Greek perspectives on Happiness to modern society. Students will investigate the concepts of Eudaimonia, Stoicism, Cynicism, Epicureanism and Hedonism to determine what can be learn from the Ancient Greek Philosophers.

Pursuit of Happiness in the 21st Century? Extended Response under exam conditions: Analytical Essay 600-800 words Students are challenged to analyse classical theories of thought and evaluate the relevance of them in the modern world.
