Danny Pettry’s Newsletter for Recreational Therapists

15-years-old in 2019!

Danny Pettry started providing a FREE e-newsletter for recreational therapists and allied professionals in 2004. Pettry created the newsletter to promote a series of Leisure Education booklets and resources that he created. The newsletter was originally titled: Teach Leisure. The newsletter has changed names over the years. Pettry called it (Rec Therapy CEUs and News) for several years. It had been titled, Danny Pettry’s Rec Therapy Newsletter for many years. It has been titled, Rec Therapy Today since 2013.

Pettry’s newsletter was highly inspired by Charlie Dixon’s TR Directory’s newsletter. Mr. Dixson provided mentorship to Pettry in t;he early years.

Charlie Dixon commented to Danny Pettry at a West Virginia conference (circa 2006) that two of the most active recreational therapists on the internet were both in the same room at the conference. Mr. Dixon expressed to Mr. Pettry that he felt surprised that there weren’t more active blogs and newsletters for recreational therapists.

Finally, there are more active people with blogs and newsletters for recreational therapists online. Many of these amazing news sites have popped up over the last the last two to five years.

Rec Therapist of the Month

Meagan Young (people call her Meag) Meagan earned a Bachelor of Recreation, specializing in Therapeutic Recreation from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Meagan has been a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for 6.5 years.

She became a rec therapist because (like most of us) she was called to serve others. Her call came from young age. She started university in pre- Social Worker Program. After 2nd year of school, she took a gap year to be a ski bum in Banff AB. While was there, she met a recreational therapist leading an adaptive skiing group and she told all about what she did. That night when I got home, I pulled out my laptop and applied to the TR degree program at Memorial University.



She currently works at a level four (secured residential behavioral health center, providing services for children and youth.

She provides a mix of interventions including: therapeutic drumming, trauma informed yoga, initiative/ collaborative games, flat water canoeing, leisure education, physical activities, and community integration to new a few.

Naturally, her facility is growing and changing as they work to incorporate evidenced based practice in their programming.

What do you love about your work?

I LOVE that recreation therapists see a side of the individual that other disciplines may not be looking for. We work with the individuals who have been injured physically, cognitively, spiritually, mentally, or emotionally to find the things in life that spark joy, happiness, and a meaning. We are spark finders!

What would you recommend a new rec therapist to do?

Ahh I have so many recommendations (Danny – this is a great idea for a blog post 😊). My number one recommendation is to find a mentor! I was so lucky to have worked with AMAZING recreation therapist and other health professionals early in my career. They instilled in me this confidence that what I was doing was important and unique. You can learn so much from others, so don’t be afraid to ask for help!!!

Where do you see the future of rec therapy?

I see us having a much larger online presence. I would love to see recreation therapy influencers, using their online platform to educate



their followers on how to use recreation, leisure and flow to improve the quality of their lives!

I also see recreation therapy continue to move into the direction entrepreneurship and private practice. We as Recreation therapist are a smart bunch, and as front-line workers we see where the gaps in services are. Why not use our intelligence and creativity and work together to fill in those gaps!!?? (So if you are ever looking for a buddy to brainstorm with – I’m your gal - just slide on into my DM)

Who is a recreation therapist who you admire and why?

I have two 😊

#1 - Richard Shaw – He is the bees-knees of Recreation Therapy. I have only known him for about a year and a half, but he has taught me so much in that time. He is an expert in the field of adventure therapy and continues to supervise new RT grads every semester through their NCTRC internship.

#2 – Me (five years from now). I want to do everything I can every day of my life to be the sort of recreation therapist and human currently look up to and admire #goals

My (Paternal) Grandmother Knew I Was Going to Be a Recreational Therapist

My grandmother had dementia in her later years. She suffered from loss of memory and forgot how to simple tasks like using the phone, cooking, or driving. She had become very disoriented after a falling (circa 1998) and never recuperated fully after that. She asked me (circa 2000) what I was studying at Marshall University (which is the local big college here in West Virginia). Of course, she may have that I was her son (Danny Pettry senior/ my father). I told her I was studying to become a Recreational Therapist. My grandmother said she knew what recreational therapy was. I was shocked. How did she know this? I had my doubts because most people ask: what is recreational therapy, with an intrigued face. My grandmother knew what recreational therapy was. She was able to explain it fairly well. She also suggested I’d be very good at that.

But how did she know what recreational therapy was? My grandmother (a former fourth grade teacher) had volunteered thousands of hours at the Beckley V.A. Hospital after she retired. She worked directly with their Recreational Therapist. She met a man, Alexander Napier, a WWII Veteran who also volunteered to work there. (My paternal grandfather passed before I was born). Carrie ended up marrying Alex in the early 80s, who she never would have met had it not been for volunteering. Alex was the only grandfather who I ever knew. Alex Napier passed in Jan 2000 and Carrie passed in June 2003. I had the opportunity to speak with the V.A. Recreational therapists at the Beckley V.A. Hospital who referred to Carrie and Alex as very devoted volunteers.
